Abstract: Information systems (IS) are complex and effortful, placing ever-greater demands on humans’ executive functions. Executive functions, general-purpose control processes that regulate one’s thoughts and behaviors, are the subject of growing investigation in cognitive psychology. The present research examines the relationship between individuals’ executive functions and IS learning. Using neuropsychological methods from cognitive psychology, we measured three key dimensions of executive functions: working memory, shifting, and inhibition. Two empirical studies were conducted. Study 1 tested the relationship between executive functions and IS learning in a self-paced offline learning environment. Study 2 replicated Study 1 and extended it to include a comparison of two self-paced online learning methods: behavior modeling and text-based learning. Both studies found significant effects of executive functions on IS learning after controlling for known IS learning determinants. Study 2 also showed that declarative knowledge was higher for behavior modeling than for text-based learning. Overall, our research highlights the influence of executive functions on IS learning. This research advances knowledge about determinants of IS learning and opens important research avenues for gaining deeper insights into cognitive mechanisms underlying effective IS learning. Abstract: Open government data (OGD) exhibits substantial political, economic, cultural, and social values that have gained considerable attention globally. Based on the investigation and analysis of the OGD practice, this study raises the research question, “Why do considerable differences exist in the degree of OGD implementation among different agencies under the same local government?” Our study takes resource-based theory as theoretical foundation to explore the factors that affect OGD implementation of constituent agencies within the same local government. A questionnaire survey is conducted to analyze the effect of factors including technical capacity, organizational awareness, organizational arrangement, and rules and regulations on OGD implementation. Re sults show that the technical capacity, organizational arrangement, and rules and regulations of government agencies have a direct positive effect on OGD implementation. Notably, rules and regulations moderate the relationship between technical capacity and OGD implementation. Besides, the matching degree of technical capacity and other organizational factors in a government agency exerts a positive influence on OGD imple mentation. Finally, our study proposes policy suggestions that emphasize the direction and focus for OGD implementation. Collapse

Abstract: We investigate how to effectively manage online wait using a waiting screen with progress cues in different cultures. A research model is developed based on uncertainty reduction model, resource allocation model, color psychology, and Hofstede’s cultural model. Two controlled lab experiments (n=269 subjects each) were conducted in U.S. and Taiwan. We found that high hedonic valence and high time affordance were more effective to induce greater enjoyment and less uncertainty respectively, resulting in shorter perceived waiting time. We also found the significant background color effect and interaction effects between culture and progress cue design. Collapse

Abstract: This study seeks a better understanding of information-sharing behavior in online consumption communities by investigating both the antecedents and moderating mechanisms of such behavior. Using self-reported data collected over two periods, along with objective behavioral data, the authors show that a reciprocity norm functions as a proximal determinant of information-sharing behavior. This norm also channels the effects of social, hedonic, and utilitarian community values on sharing behavior. The results reveal that the conversion of reciprocity norms into information-sharing behavior depends on individual and contextual conditions. These significant insights reflect the integration of consumer resource allocation theory with a reciprocity framework to establish an explanatory platform for members’ information-sharing behavior in online communities. Both theoretical and practical implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Long waits online undermine users' evaluations of Web sites and their providers, triggering abandonment behaviors. Yet e-business researchers and practitioners have not perfected mechanisms to respond to online wait issues. A filler interface that runs during the wait for search results may influence online users' perceived waiting time (PWT); however, no scientific investigation has attempted to design effective filler interfaces for managing online waits. By adopting resource allocation theory, cognitive absorption theory, and human computer interaction (HCI) theories (competition for attention, visual search, and motion effect), we design diverse filler interfaces and investigate their effects on antecedents of PWT. The proposed research model considers cognitive absorption factors such as temporal dissociation, focused immersion, and heighteneden joyment as antecedents of PWT, which in turn triggers three outcomes: affective appraisals, cognitive appraisals, and Web site use intention. A multistage, multimethod approach is used to test the research hypotheses. In the first stage, we compare a filler interface condition with a no-filler interface condition, and find the superiority of a filler interface with respect to inducing focused immersion and temporal dissociation.In the second stage, we conduct two controlled experiments to examine whether filler interfaces with various designs (varying the presence and relevance of image, text, and image motion) distinctly influence antecedents of PWT and confirm their distinctive effects on focused immersion, temporal dissociation, and heighteneden joyment. In addition, by conducting a structural equation modeling analysis, we find that our research model explains 51 percent, 51 percent, 44 percent, and 45 percent of the variance in PWT, affective appraisals,cognitive appraisals, and Web site use intention respectively.
