Abstract: With the rise and integration of AI technologies within organizations, our understanding of the impact of this technology on individuals remains limited. Although the IS use literature provides important guidance for organization to increase employees' willingness to work with new technology, the utilitarian view of prior IS use research limits its application considering the new evolving social interaction between humans and AI agents. We contribute to the IS use literature by implementing a social view to understand the impact of AI agents on an individual's perception and behavior. By focusing on the main design dimensions of AI agents, we propose a framework that utilizes social psychology theories to explain the impact of those design dimensions on individuals. Specifically, we build on Similarity Attraction Theory to propose an AI similarity-continuance model that aims to explain how similarity with AI agents influence individuals' IT identity and intention to continue working with it. Through an online brainstorming experiment, we found that similarity with AI agents indeed has a positive impact on IT identity and on the intention to continue working with the AI agent. Collapse

Abstract: Digital technology (DT) is creating and shaping today's world. Building on its identity and history of technology research, the Information Systems discipline is at the forefront of understanding the nature of DT and related phenomena. Understanding the nature of DT requires understanding its purposes. Because of the growing number of DTs, these purposes are diversifying, and further examination is needed. To that end, we followed an organizational systematics paradigm and present a taxonomic theory for DT that enables its classification through its diverse purposes. The taxonomic theory comprises a multi-layer taxonomy of DT and purpose-related archetypes, which we inferred from a sample of 92 real-world DTs. In our empirical evaluation, we assessed the reliability, validity, and usefulness of the taxonomy and archetypes. The taxonomic theory exceeds existing technology classifications by being the first that (1) has been rigorously developed, (2) considers the nature of DT, (3) is sufficiently concrete to reflect the diverse purposes of DT, and (4) is sufficiently abstract to be persistent. Our findings add to the descriptive knowledge on DT, advance our understanding of the diverse purposes of DT, and lay the ground for further theorizing. Our work also supports practitioners in managing and designing DTs. Collapse

Abstract: Introduction to the special issueInformation Communication Technology (ICT): People, Culture, and Globalization The broad objective of this Special Issue (SI) was to deliver new insights into the management of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the view of ICT users', consumers', or managers' cultural diversity, in order to enhance our understanding of how ICT connects people across countries or cultures and affects their behavior. Understanding how ICT and culture affect human decisions is timely and of crucial importance because ICT is a driving force behind almost any form of business internationalization or globalization. Although the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's war in Ukraine currently lead to a slowdown in business globalization, it is clear that many firms continue to operate in, or expand into foreign countries, as well as deal with people from different cultures within a country. Almost all firms and organizations today use ICT to connect with people and must therefore address questions of how culture affects ICT usage and user behavior, and what the consequences are for the organization.We therefore aimed to bring together a group of international researchers in marketing and related disciplines broadly concerned with business globalization and ICT management. The SI was initially planned as part of the Royal Bank International Research Seminar (RBIRS), which has since 2001 been very successfully held bi-annually in Montreal, Canada. RBIRC, the international conference version, was also very successfully held in 2010 in Tokyo, Japan, in 2012 in Shanghai, China, and in 2016 in Wuxi, China. RBRIS has since many years brought together likeminded researchers from across the globe, who share research interest frequently in fields related to the role of culture in consumer behavior, how consumers interact with technology, as well as links between the two. We thus planned to organize the 2020 edition of RBIRC at Kedge Business School in Marseille, France and link this SI to it as an opportunity for researchers to publish innovative and relevant work. Unfortunately, the emergence of COVID-19 as a global pandemic has scuttled our ambitious plans, and we were ultimately forced to cancel RBIRC 2020 for the well-known restrictions that prevented us making the conference meeting happen in Marseille. We regret these circumstances very much and hope that future issues of RBIRS can happen in-person again.Given that a number of authors had prepared targeted manuscripts before we cancelled the conference, we decided to maintain the SI, with the kind approval of the Editor-in-Chief, Yogesh Dwivedi, to whom we are most grateful. Despite the difficult circumstances, we received 11 manuscripts that underwent careful peer reviews, and we have finally accepted three of them for inclusion into the SI. The three papers cover three different forms of modern ICT, namely social media, human-like service robots, and P2P accommodation-sharing platforms. The authors of these papers use various types of methods and data to tackle different phenomena that enhance our understanding of how culture affects ICT usage and behavior.The first paper by Takhar, Bebek, & Jamal (2021) offers insights into the role of social media's liminal characteristics (anonymity and freedom) for ethnic minority consumers' social-cultural identity construction. Given their multicultural social environments, ethnic consumers in particular experience cultural tensions in their daily lives related to potentially conflicting online-and offline cultural-social identities. Focusing on Instagram and third-generation British Sikhs, and using a multi-method qualitative research design (observations, nethnography, and semi-structured interviews), the authors demonstrate how liminality enables imagined or idealized social-cultural identities with important implications for social media marketing, such as virtual brand communities. Marketers should consider liminality as a factor that empowers consumers' identity construction, which can help them develop stronger and more sustainable customer relationships.The second paper in this SI, written by Pitardi, Bartikowski, Osburg, Collapse

Abstract: While robots appear to be more and more human-like in form and function, they are still machines. People can hence perceive them as humans or machines. With varying human-like designs and user perceptions, there is much confusion about how to measure trust in human-robot relationships. While some researchers use human-like trusting beliefs to conceptualize trust, others use machine-like trusting beliefs to do the same. In this paper, we present a conceptual model and related research propositions to help researchers determine the correct conceptualization of trust for human-robot interaction. We propose that anthropomorphism, or perceptions of humanness about the robot, can dictate the conceptualization of trust in human-robot relationships. Collapse

Abstract: Fairness is an important aspect for individuals and teams. This also applies to human-robot interaction (HRI). Especially if intelligent robots provide services to multiple humans, humans may feel treated unfairly by robots. Most work in this area deals with the aspects of fair algorithms, task allocation, and decision support. This work focuses on a different, yet little-explored perspective, which looks at fairness in HRI from a human-centered perspective in human-robot teams. We present an experiment in which a service robot was responsible for distributing resources among competing team members -in one condition with an efficient (but rather unfair) distribution algorithm and in another condition with an algorithm that was less efficient but could be considered fair. We investigated how the different strategies of distribution influence the perceived fairness and how this perceived fairness influenced the perception of the robot as such. Our study shows that humans might perceive technically efficient algorithms executed by a robot as unfair, especially if humans personally experience negative consequences. Interestingly, this perceived unfairness had a negative impact on human perception of the robot as such, which should be considered in the design of future robots. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming pervasive across industries, making it important for management information systems (MIS) students to understand the ethical issues involved. We present an active learning approach to teaching the fast-changing topic of AI ethics using a debate format. This approach was piloted in an undergraduate MIS course of 30 students. Over a five-week period, student teams were assigned to argue either the opportunities (pro) or dangers (con) viewpoint for five different AI technologies. A post-project survey indicated this format helps students gain a better understanding of the applications, opportunities, and potential misuse of AI. Students found this to be an engaging and fun way to explore the multiple dimensions of AI ethics that also required them to employ critical thinking, collaboration, research, and communication skills. We share our findings about the benefits of co-creating knowledge in the classroom using a debate format to explore an evolving topic. Collapse

Abstract: This study reveals the paradox of technostress on the elderly due to the large-scale COVID testing during the postCOVID-19 period. Drawing upon the stressor-strain-outcomes framework, we examined how technology-driven stressors affect the elderly’s avoidance behaviors. Results indicate that two types of technology-driven stressors exert opposite influences on the elderly’s avoidance behaviors through the mediating effect of technology anxiety. Specifically, the elderly’s technology-driven challenge stressors exert a positive influence on their avoidance behaviors, while the elderly’s technology-driven hindrance stressors exert a negative influence. Moreover, stigma consciousness plays a moderating role in the relationship between the elderly’s technologydriven hindrance stressors and technology anxiety by strengthening the positive influence of the elderly’s technology-driven hindrance stressors on technology anxiety. Our findings deepen the understanding of the good and bad of technostress and provide implications for older adults, technology developers, and the government. Collapse
