Abstract: Understanding a new literature corpus can be a grueling experience for junior scholars. Nevertheless, corresponding guidelines have not been updated for decades. We contend that the traditional strategy of skimming all papers and reading selected papers afterwards needs to be revised. Therefore, we design a new strategy that guides the overall exploratory process by prioritizing influential papers for initial reading, followed by skimming the remaining papers. Consistent with schemata theory, starting with indepth reading allows readers to acquire more substantial prior content schemata, which are representative for the literature corpus and useful in the following skimming process. To this end, we develop a prototype that identifies the influential papers from a set of PDFs, which is illustrated in a case study in the IT business value domain. With the new strategy, we envision a more efficient process of exploring unknown literature corpora. Collapse

Abstract: The instance-based paradigm – introduced as an alternative to traditional class-based database management methods – does not require imposing a well-defined schema over data, nor does it entail central control and planning. As a consequence, it supports information requirements agility, enables collection of higher quality data, and reduces the schema and database operation problems associated with traditional methods. This study investigates the ability of content-consumers to use instancebased representations effectively for information retrieval purposes. A visual representation of the instance-based data was created and empirically evaluated with 12 subjects using protocol analysis. Results show that instance-based users were able to retrieve the required information more accurately compared to users of the traditional representation. From a cognitive point of view, instance-based users were more efficient than class-based users – they experienced fewer breakdowns in their problem solving process and, when breakdowns occurred, were more successful in recovering from them. Abstract: The concept of Object Orientation (OO) is very appealing to many in the information systems field. Although it requires a radical shift in the traditional systems development paradigm, many have begun to embrace it. This paper explores the literature on knowledge representation and expertise in the cognitive sciences and in information systems to lend substance to the underlying OO approach. We show that OO closely parallels our current understanding of the concept of expert knowledge representation based on schemata and scripts, and thus is particularly attractive to individuals who are or aspire to be ‘expert’ systems developers. We then examine the IS literature on expertise and reinterpret findings to support our depiction of expertise within IS. The OO approach incorporates many of the characteristics of expert-level knowledge representation, which may explain its appeal to those in the systems development profession. We propose that the OO methodology also contributes to the acquisition of expertise by documenting and sharing the modelling approach of those with considerable IS design expertise. Collapse
