Abstract: This research-in-progress aims to offer a more nuanced and dynamic perspective to the task-technology fit model. It draws on the script and affordance theories to reconceptualize task and technology concepts and their fit. In brief, users are continuously balancing their changing task scripts with the evolving affordances of the system. The scripts are constantly modified to incorporate new affordances and user experiences. The scripts also affect how people understand the affordances available to them. The essay discusses the implications of the proposed model and concludes with the next steps for the study. Collapse

Abstract: In this research in progress paper, we discuss the acceptance and appropriation of workplace mobile health interventions aiming to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour, and how this is connected to social cohesion in the workplace. We utilised script theory to investigate what visions, assumptions and choice is made by developers in the design of the mobile health technology, and the consequences this hold in regards of user mobilisation and the effects of the intervention at the workplace. We report preliminary findings from four different workplaces, and with a total of 709 users. We contribute by discussing the importance of flexibility of the Avantas Aktiv script, how the script is accepted by some and rejected by others, and how social cohesion is both a result of and a premise for successful mobilisation of users. Finally, we point to future avenues for research. Collapse

Abstract: The concept of Object Orientation (OO) is very appealing to many in the information systems field. Although it requires a radical shift in the traditional systems development paradigm, many have begun to embrace it. This paper explores the literature on knowledge representation and expertise in the cognitive sciences and in information systems to lend substance to the underlying OO approach. We show that OO closely parallels our current understanding of the concept of expert knowledge representation based on schemata and scripts, and thus is particularly attractive to individuals who are or aspire to be ‘expert’ systems developers. We then examine the IS literature on expertise and reinterpret findings to support our depiction of expertise within IS. The OO approach incorporates many of the characteristics of expert-level knowledge representation, which may explain its appeal to those in the systems development profession. We propose that the OO methodology also contributes to the acquisition of expertise by documenting and sharing the modelling approach of those with considerable IS design expertise. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems (IS) researchers have argued the need for using qualitative approaches, such as action research, ethnomethodology, phenomenology, and futures research, to supplement widely used quantitative approaches. Despite the interest in qualitative approaches, almost all IS articles published in leading IS journals during the previous decade continue to report the results of quantitative studies. The disparity between the interest in and adoption of qualitative approaches may be attributed to unfamiliarity with qualitative approaches for analyzing text data and the mistaken belief that all qualitative approaches are antipositivist. This paper makes qualitative methods more accessible to both researchers and practitioners by providing a framework that categorizes various text analysis approaches. The framework classifies methods as positivist, linguistic, and interpretivist, based on assumptions about the nature of text data, the researcher's influence on text interpretation, and the validity checks used to justify text interpretations. Thus, all researchers can consider qualitative text analysis methods regardless of their paradigmatic position. Collapse
