Abstract: This study examines the role-related impacts of working with an intelligent assistant. Using collaborative autoethnography, we analyse the impact of working with an intelligent writing assistant (IWA) on our roles as teachers. Drawing on role theory, we find that working with the IWA had significant impacts on role enactment, role set, role multiplexity, role stress, and role self-concept. The social setting for role enactment changed as key dyadic relationships became triadic, and the IWA assumed a co-regulatory role, mediating our performance as coregulators of student learning. Collaborating with the IWA created a need to maintain control by switching between micro-identities (our role of teacher/mentor and our new role of mentee of the IWA). The study demonstrates that significant role-related impacts can arise from human-machine collaboration when AI aims to enhance human performance. It highlights the need for new adaptive capabilities as humans become involved in new triadic human-AI relationships. Collapse

Abstract: This paper reports the findings of an ethnographic study of Chinese outbound backpackers’ use and adoption of consumer information services (CIS) in an intercultural tourism setting. We apply McKenna et al.’s research model of consumers’ adoption of information services as the analytical lens for the interpretive qualitative study. The data gathering was conducted in four different countries. The findings of the study confirm linkages between four information service types and the use and adoption of CIS. The study also found that service types are more diversely linked than the earlier studies have predicted and therefore we propose a revised research model, which can be used for studying different CIS usage behaviour/patterns, but also to design of CIS for specific contexts. Abstract: Learning is becoming increasingly digital not only in the academic context, but also in the corporate context. Research on how to adapt e-learning courses to the learner's individual cognitive style is gaining momentum. However, especially in the corporate context, some more basic questions appear to be still unanswered such as whether differences in cognitive style explain differences in corporate learners' usage behavior. Based on data including both users and non-users of a globally operating professional service firm, I identify differences in behavior and attempt to explain them with cognitive style theory. The findings include distinct pattern in usage behavior, which cognitive style surprisingly does not explain. Implications for future research and practice are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Using push–pull–mooring framework and investment model as theoretical lenses, this study provides a compelling theoretical model that helps understand the important antecedents of career commitment of IT professionals. Especially, we examined the moderating role of IT career tenure. Data to test the hypotheses were drawn from a cross-sectional ﬁeld study of MIS departments from top-1000 large-scale companies in Taiwan. The results generally supported the research model. Career satisfaction was the most important determinant of career commitment, followed by professional self-efﬁcacy, threat of professional obsolescence and career investment. The moderating analysis revealed distinct patterns that IT professionals seemed to hold different attitudes about the careers at different stages. The career attitudes of senior IT professionals were largely driven by push factors. On the contrary, the expelling forces which driving people away from their current careers (push effects) and personal inhibitors and facilitators (mooring effects) seemed equally important to junior IT professionals on their attitudes toward committing to the IT career. Insight and implications on management strategy for IT/HR managers are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: In this conceptual study we first categorize, from existing literature, different conceptions of culture rooted in Anthropology and Sociology. We argue that these conceptions build up the logical structure of specific theoretical and empirical tools which address human/IS interactions in a cultural-based perspective. We then propose a new model of the individual’s global culture, the Spinning Top Model. We posit theoretical proposals based on this model and define a new analytical framework which can open new paths for IS research, the study of IT-related values , IT-attitudes and IT-behaviors. Abstract: This paper develops a conceptual framework to explain employees' technology usage within organizations. Much of the prior information systems literature has assumed an underlying relationship between "facilitating conditions" for information technology (IT) adoption (e.g., user training, technical support, resource availability) and employees' technology use. Although these facilitating conditions are important, they do not provide a complete explanation of employees' IT usage. The reality of working in organizational settings suggests a different model of IT adoption and usage. Drawing from research on social information processing theory, and acknowledging the role of other individuals within the work context that shapes employees' learning, values, and behavior, we propose a framework to explain employees' adoption of IT and their level of usage within organizations, featuring both individual-level factors and factors related to the social information processing influence of co-workers. Our results show that an employee's coworkers exert an important influence on IT usage, whereas individual-level factors exhibit more modest effects. Collapse
