Abstract: With the increase of users’ social connections on social network services, their social circles become more diverse, which make it difficult to maintain their ideal images and thus lead to their lurking behaviors. Based on the self-discrepancy theory, an integrated model was proposed to link role-related constructs to lurking intention. Results based on data from 641 WeChat users show that social interaction anxiety and disappointment positively influence lurking intention. Role conflict and role overload positively influence social interaction anxiety and disappointment. Moreover, role overload positively moderates the relationship between role conflict and disappointment. Lastly, study implications and conclusions are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: This study investigates members’ satisfaction with interest-based social network communities from an identity-reconstruction perspective. Drawing upon the self-discrepancy theory and the regulatory focus theory, we theoretically modeled the factors (relating to identity reconstruction) that influence members’ satisfaction with social network communities and further investigated whether these influences on satisfaction are contingent upon how much the virtual identity is reconstructed. Data (n = 1063) were collected from six interest-based social network communities. Results support most main effects and further support two moderating effects. The effect of bridging social capital on satisfaction and the effect of privacy concern on satisfaction are contingent upon identity reconstruction. Collapse

Abstract: Using a pathological perspective (e.g., addiction), some research suggests that technology engagement leads to poor self-regulation of behaviours. Rather than pathologise predictors of negative outcomes of IT use, we offer an alternative, identity-based explanation to investigate the role of identity in relation to an individual’s perceptions of his/her media use and the potential negative consequences of such use. We build on recent advances in conceptualising IT identity, defined as the extent to which one perceives an IT as central to who he/she is, to explore one’s self-identification with social networking sites (SNS) within a broader nomological net of deficient self-regulation, IS habit, use, and normative pressures. Results of a survey of 214 college students indicate that if an individual has strong self-identification with a particular SNS, it will increase perceptions of poor self-control over his/her time. Our study contributes to the literature by highlighting the utility of an identity-based (vs. pathology-based) explanation for such outcomes, which has distinct implications for interventions aimed at improving these outcomes. We suggest future research to advance understanding of IT identity’s antecedents and consequences, and discuss practical implications for managing SNS use in workplace and academic settings. Abstract: Information technology (IT) is often an enabler in bringing people together. In the context of this study, IT helps connect matchmaking service providers with those looking for love, particularly when a male seeks to meet and possibly marry a female from another country: a process which results in over 16,500 such ‘mail-order-bride’ (MOB) marriages a year in the United States alone. Past research in business disciplines has been largely silent about the way in which this process unfolds, the perspectives of the participants at different points of time, and the role of IT underlying the MOB matchmaking service. Adopting an interpretivist stance, and utilizing some of the methodological guidelines associated with the Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM), we develop a process model which highlights: a) the key states of the process through which the relationship between the MOB seeker (the man) and the MOB (the woman) unfolds, b) the transitions between states, and c) the triggering conditions for the transitions from one state to another. This study also highlights key motivations of the individuals participating in the MOB process, the effect of power and the role it plays in the dynamics of the relationships, the status of women and how their status evolves during the MOB process, and the unique affordance provided by IT as the relationships evolve.
