Abstract: Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are critical to the success of enterprises, facilitating business operations through standardized digital processes. However, existing ERP systems are unsuitable for startups and small and medium-sized enterprises that grow quickly and require adaptable solutions with low barriers to entry. Drawing upon 15 explorative interviews with industry experts, we examine the challenges of current ERP systems using the task technology fit theory across companies of varying sizes. We describe high entry barriers, high costs of implementing implicit processes, and insufficient interoperability of already employed tools. We present a vision of a future business process platform based on three enablers: Business processes as first-class entities, semantic data and processes, and cloud-native elasticity and high availability. We discuss how these enablers address current ERP systems' challenges and how they may be used for research on the next generation of business software for tomorrow's enterprises. Abstract: This paper describes the results of a systematic review that aimed to verify the state of the art in the use of smart and open data for smart cities solutions, besides identifying the different perspectives and approaches adopted in its implementation. An initial screening of 472 papers was carried out, which underwent a selection of criteria aiming to identify the papers that deal with the use of open data and smart data in any domain of smart cities or that carry out a more theoretical evaluation of the subject matter. As a result of the research it was possible to verify that smart data solutions cover a variety of technologies such as linked data, semantic and IoT principles and big data, whose abilities involve to structure and analyze data from different sources. Open data solutions are also applied by managers and researchers with the aim of developing their own vocabularies and integrating data from different domains and sources to generate useful information. Abstract: Within this paper we utilise insight from not only the pragmatic perspective on information systems but also Piercian semiotics to establish that information models can be conceived as declarations of significance about communicative conventions in some domain of organisation. The approach described offers a new way of expressing the relationship between models of information systems, specified as design comics, and information models, specified as class diagrams. It also provides a convenient way of expressing the propositional content of informative acts as a complex of binary relations. This approach we believe offers greater clarity and precision to the idea of pragmatic information modelling and is currently being field-tested both within aspects of pedagogy as well as in business analysis work with organisations. Abstract: Decision models are organizational resources that need to be managed to facilitate sharing and reuse. In today's networked economy, the ubiquity of the Internet and distributed computing environments further amplifies the need and the potential for distributed model management system (DMMS) that manages decision models throughout the modeling lifecycle and throughout the extended enterprise. This paper presents a service-oriented architecture for DMMS. The proposed architecture leverages service-oriented design principles and recent developments in semantic web services to enable model sharing and reuse in a distributed setting. Abstract: The management of semantic multidimensional data models plays an important role during the phases of development and maintenance of data warehouse systems. Unfortunately, this is not done with the necessary stress by now. Reasons might be seen in the plethora of semantic notations or the insufficient tool support for multidimensional modeling. The paper on hand provides experiences gained within a project with an industry partner of the telecommunications industry. Their problem is a very huge data warehouse with more than 400 data cubes and several hundred key performance indicators. We developed a repository-based solution for managing the semantic data models. Our lessons learned show that especially for very large data models there has to be a repository based solution as well as a clear concept on how to break them up into their component pars. The aim of our principles is to increase the understandability as well as the maintainability of semantic multidimensional data models. Collapse

It has long been recognized that information security and system integration are among the key issues for IT executives. We posit that these issues still remain open and they are exacerbated by the fact that highly competitive enterprises operate in an environment characterized by distributed and heterogeneous information systems and heterogeneous information and knowledge resources. Following the design science paradigm, we propose a design artifact that allows for formally represented knowledge to be securely shared across the extended-enterprise. Abstract: End users respond to stakeholders' information requests by using query tools to retrieve information from their organizations' data stores. The structure of these data stores impacts end users' performance, e.g., the accuracy of their responses. Ontologically clearer conceptual models have been shown to facilitate better problem solving within real-world application domains. If, however, ontologically clearer conceptual models are directly transformed into implementation (logical) data models, the differences in the number of entities and relationships may cause cognitive issues for end users that are likely to affect their query performance. This paper reports the results of an experiment that investigated the effect on query performance of more traditional logical models compared to ontologically clearer logical models. Results indicate that end users of the ontologically clearer implementation made fewer semantic errors overall. Thus, the benefits of ontological clarity at the conceptual level may translate into similar benefits when querying ontologically clearer logical models. Unfortunately, an examination of the specific types of errors that were made indicated that the benefits are not clear cut. While the removal of optional attributes and relationships led to an overall reduction in the number of errors, closer analyses show that some types of errors (involving projection and restriction) decreased as expected, while other types of errors (involving joins) increased. Abstract: In this paper we present propositions which we have argued elsewhere concerning ontology and data models. Additionally, we present evidence relating to our propositions. We have found that Chisholm’s ontology has the potential to be a unifying theory for data models. In addition, our research has lead us to the position that ontologies founded in the philosophical tradition of realism seem to serve the purpose of a unifying framework for data models. Further, we have seen the realistic ontologies by Mario Bunge and Roderick Chisholm used in information systems. Abstract: Modern organizations are successfully using project teams to address complex tasks. Yet these teams often use approaches for project data management that may not capture project processes, contexts, rationales, or artifacts in a way that enables new project members to familiarize themselves quickly with the project history. Project information is rarely captured, retained, or indexed so that people external to the project can retrieve and apply it to future tasks. To address the issue of capturing a comprehensive project history that can subsequently be retrieved and applied to current problems, a generalizable object-oriented data model is developed. It decomposes project information into five discrete classes: projects, users, events, meetings, and documents. Through inheritance and domain references, the model describes the people, temporal events (such as meetings or single agenda items within a meeting), and archival documents that are created within a project or support some aspect of the project. These project items can be retrieved based on either contextual information (such as the dates they were created or last revised, who created them, or the projects they pertain to) or user-supplied descriptive keywords. Hypertext-like links can also be created to associate related items. Based on this model, a prototype system, Project Memory, has been developed to validate the model structure and system requirements. Collapse
