Abstract: This study focuses on collaboration among team members in educational escape rooms in higher education. The objective of this study was to understand how collective mindfulness and less mindful behavior unfold in physical and digital game-based learning. The video data were collected from three different courses comprising 107 students on 28 teams, totaling more than 16 hours of material. The qualitative analysis revealed both collectively mindful and less mindful behaviors in team interactions. This paper contributes to collective mindfulness literature in understanding team collaboration by observing that mindfulness may be relative depending on the observation perspective. It also presents factors that affect member equality in both digital and physical escape rooms. Lastly, a nuanced description of how team collaboration occurred in a short-term problem-solving situation is developed. Collapse

Abstract: This study discusses how students' temporal, adaptive processes, and learning regulation can be understood using multi-channel data. We analyzed the behaviors of 189 students to identify a range of self-regulated learning (SRL) profiles that lead to different achievement in a large-scale undergraduate course seeing how students' SRL unfold during the course, which helps understand the complicated cyclical nature of SRL. We identified three SRL profiles by administrating and analyzing the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) three times. We looked at how students adopt different SRL profiles as the course progressed through process mining and clustering techniques to clarify the cyclical nature of SRL. We demonstrated how process mining was used to identify process patterns in self-regulated learning events as captured. Analyzing sequential patterns indicated differences in students' process models. It showed the added value of taking the order of learning activities into account, contributing to theory and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Game-based learning and educational escape rooms are increasingly used in teaching and learning since they improve student motivation, engagement and learning. However, prior literature has not studied team collaboration in gamified contexts sufficiently according to recent literature reviews. This study focuses on collaboration among team members in educational escape rooms in higher education. The objective of this study was to understand how collective mindfulness and mindlessness occur in physical and digital game-based learning. The video data was collected from three different courses, with 25 student teams, 96 participants and contains more than 15 hours of material. The analysis revealed both mindful and mindless behaviors in team interaction. Paper contributes to gamification literature by presenting the first study using collective mindfulness and mindlessness theory in understanding team collaboration noticing factors affecting member equality in both digital and physical escape rooms. It was also noticed that mindfulness may be relative depending on the observation perspective. Collapse

Abstract: Wells Fargo employees set up 3.5 million fraudulent accounts over several years. Wells Fargo ended up paying $4.5 billion in fines. The Wells Fargo scandal highlights the importance of management actions to prevent misstatements and potential frauds on a timely basis. This study utilized the design science research paradigm to develop a predictive framework (IT artifact) in order to stratify firms into multiple risk groups for disclosing material weakness(es) in internal control (MWIC). The proposed methodology employed a hybrid heuristic optimization-based machine learning methodology. Synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) was uti­ lized to handle the learning problem with the imbalanced data. The best performing model was the proposed hybrid Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Support Vector Machines (SVM). The proposed methodology was internally validated via k-fold cross validation, and then externally validated using several separate datasets. The (GA) selected variables were ranked from the most important to the least through Information fusion (IF) sensitivity. A web-based decision support system was built to predict the firm-specific MWIC risk category. The web-based tool can be used to create an early warning system for predicting MWIC(s). Collapse

Abstract: The aim of this article is to propose an alternative research approach to improve communication to stakeholders by analyzing user-generated content using a sequential analysis, which combines content analysis, to extract information about the desired concepts, and correspondence analysis, to obtain a representation of the proximity between these concepts and their relationships. The proposed approach is applied in GM Fastlane corporate blog as an example of the potential use of re-expressing unstructured data in a more accessible graphical format to facilitate its interpretation as well as the detection of main underlying relationships. Another advantage of the proposed approach is that it may help not only big organizations, but also small and medium sized companies to understand the power of user-generated content as a valuable source of ideas and opportunities for improvement based on what stakeholders really want. Moreover, when organizations identify the most important topic relationships within users-generated content classified by stakeholders, they can improve their communication strategies to increase loyal customers and suppliers in the future. Abstract: Computer-mediated communication has become a major research topic due to the growing number of graduate-level students entirely or partially enrolled in Internet-based degree programs. Drawing on the concept of common ground from Clark's communication theory, we propose a model to investigate the varying quality and flow of online learning conversations. Our investigation centers on three discourse systems in order to isolate the effects of two functional differences: online presence of the learning material and a linking functionality. The first system, which supports parallel artifact-centered discourse, displays the learning material and its related discussion in a single window. The second system, which supports linked artifact-centered discourse, provides a bi-directional linking functionality between these two elements available in a single window. The control system, which supports conventional discourse, offers the two elements in separate windows. We conducted an experiment with 30 doctoral students enrolled in three sections of an introductory research methods seminar. A total of 30 discussion transcripts, 10 for each group, formed the basis of the data analyses. Using an integrated approach that combined content and sequential analyses, we categorized and sequentially plotted all messages. The findings demonstrate that the online presence of the learning material supports sustained discussions centered on understanding the meaning of a text. Moreover, a linking functionality promotes complex forms of interaction with the learning material and re-focuses the discussion when it digresses. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of these findings. Collapse

Abstract: Fads, from a cognitive perspective, are caused by informational cascades. It describes a situation in which people observe the actions of others and then make the same choice, regardless of their own information. Previous research on informational cascades suggested that behavioral conformity prevents information aggregation, and therefore the stability of an informational cascade need not increase as more people join the bandwagon. However, under information overload conditions, where there is more information than a person can handle, any one individual's information is a sample of the whole information pool. When assessing an existing informational cascade an individual can rule out the possibility that predecessors had enough information to shatter the cascade, as the cascade continues. In this way, information (i.e., that the cascade has not been rejected) is injected into cascade even when a new decision-maker simply follows predecessors' behavior. Taking this into consideration, we analyze the information threshold for rational conformity/deviation behavior, and propose a model that will measure information aggregation and evaluate the stability of informational cascades under an overloaded information setting. The results captured two primary behavioral aspects of informational cascade: information aggregation and diminishing sensitivity. Abstract: Negotiating contracts with multiple interdependent issues may yield non-monotonic preference spaces for the participating agents. These negotiations are specially challenging because of the complexity and dimension of the search space. Automated negotiation mechanisms designed and proven useful for monotonic utility spaces may fail in these negotiation scenarios. This paper presents a novel solution to the problem of automated multi-issue negotiations in the context of complex utility spaces. We seek to address the challenge of intractably large contract spaces and utility functions with multiple local optima in automated negotiation scenarios. A protocol for automated bilateral multi-attribute negotiation processes is proposed, in which the individual agents’ preferences can be non-monotonic and discontinuous. The protocol is based on a recursive non-mediated bargaining mechanism, which involves two agents who simultaneously exchange proposals defined as regions within the negotiation space. An agreement on a region implies a new bargaining which is restricted to that region. This recursive process is governed by a set of rules which modulate the joint exploration of the negotiation space until an agreement is found or a deadline expires. The protocol is experimentally evaluated under monotonic and non-monotonic preference scenarios, confirming that the protocol is able to produce outcomes close to the Pareto frontier in acceptable negotiation time, outperforming previous approaches.
