Abstract: Changes in customer demands and technological advances increase the complexity of production scheduling. Hence, current production scheduling algorithms are not sufficiently good. Additionally, advances in the research of Machine Learning algorithms drive the development of new scheduling algorithms. Each algorithm’s quality is problem-dependent, making it challenging to find the best algorithm for a given production scenario. Benchmark problems only provide guidance as they do not reflect real-world situations. To address this issue, in this article, we develop the software artifact Simfia that allows researchers and practitioners to evaluate production scheduling algorithms in highly customizable experiments. To create the solution, we follow a design science research approach. We identify 30 functional requirements, develop the solution prototypically and demonstrate it in an exemplary production scenario. The artifact is developed in a service-oriented architecture where scheduling algorithms are provided as individually deployable scheduling services that Simfia manages. This solution enables researchers and practitioners to experiment with production scheduling algorithms in highly configurable production scenarios. Collapse

Abstract: The goal of this paper is to establish the notion of "technology-specific modeling method" instantiated by a showcase example that was realized as a Design Science artifact, within the Agile Modeling Method Engineering framework, considering a particular technological context and technology-dependent purpose -the management of ETL (extract-transform-load) processes and their interoperability with an in-house ETL platform running in an organization that deals with heavy data management and orchestration tasks. With the term "technology-specific", we refer to a level of specificity that does not stem from concepts pertaining to the business sector or goals, but from technological abstractions already available in the model-driven environment where models are intended to be used. Besides reporting on the engineering details of a showcase modeling language, the paper also draws theoretical reflections on the notion of "technology-specific modeling" and what distinguishes it from the traditional domainspecific class of modeling languages. Abstract: This paper reports a design science research (DSR) study that develops, demonstrates and evaluates a set of design principles for information systems (IS) that utilise learning analytics to support learning and teaching in higher education. The initial set of design principles is created from theory-inspired conceptualisation based on the literature, and they are evaluated and revised through a DSR process of demonstration and evaluation. Abstract: In this research, we report the information technologies rated as important by IT professionals in thirty-seven countries of the world, thus enhancing our understanding of the global technology landscape. Past research has focused primarily on the U.S. technology issues, which although useful in the U.S. context, may not generalize to all other countries. Globally, four core technologies have been ranked high for most of the coun­ tries: networks/telecommunications, business intelligence/analytics, enterprise application integration, and mobile and wireless applications. There were also differences among countries. Statistical analyses were per­ formed to analyze the nature of these differences based on the economic level of the country and its IT infra­ structure capability. Further insights were generated by performing cluster analysis; grouping the countries into three clusters (optimizers, pragmatists, and progressives), and examining their characteristics and technology priorities. These results are useful for multinational companies, governments, and international agencies as they forge their technology strategies and make investment decisions. We also lay the foundation for ongoing research to better understand the contextual factors that explain the differences in technology priorities among nations. Collapse

Abstract: Business Process Management Systems (BPMSs) provide automated support for the execution of business processes in modern organisations. With the emergence of cloud computing, BPMS deployment considerations are shifting from traditional on-premise models to the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) paradigm, aiming at delivering Business Process Automation as a Service. However, scaling up a traditional BPMS to cope with simultaneous demand from multiple organisations in the cloud is challenging, since its underlying system architecture has been designed to serve a single organisation with a single process engine. Moreover, the complexity in addressing both the dynamic execution environment and the elasticity requirements of users impose further challenges to deploying a traditional BPMS in the cloud. A typical SaaS often deploys multiple instances of its core applications and distributes workload to these application instances via load balancing. But, for stateful and often long-running process instances, standard stateless load balancing strategies are inadequate. In this article, we propose a conceptual design of BPMS capable of addressing dynamically varying demands of end users in the cloud, and present a prototypical implementation using an open source traditional BPMS platform. Both the design and system realisation offer focused strategies on achieving scalability and demonstrates the system capabilities for supporting both upscaling, to address large volumes of user demand or workload, and downscaling, to release underutilised computing resources, in a cloud environment. Abstract: Services are becoming increasingly important, and service systems are seeing the use of service-dominant logic to understand value creation through the integration of active and passive resources. Digital transformation is significantly influencing service systems, and new, smart technologies are enabling innovative value propositions, leading to smart service systems. Smart products, which are a part of the Internet of Things, are the main building blocks of such systems. Attempts have been made to conceptualize smart service systems, but there seems to be no consensus in the literature because, for example, smart products have not been defined in a consistent way. We therefore examine ways to classify smart service systems in terms of their characteristics and attributes. We develop a taxonomy based on a systematic literature review focusing on smart features. Furthermore, an evaluation using domain-specific use cases demonstrates the applicability of the taxonomy. Our contribution combines and extends the available conceptualizations regarding smart service systems to pave the way for the necessary future research. Collapse

Abstract: Multi-sided platforms (MSPs) are one of the dominant designs of the digital age. However, prior research focuses mainly on established MSPs, leaving little insight into their emergence. We use the literature on technological trajectories and technology diffusion to derive four propositions that increase our understanding on the emergence of MSPs. The propositions include the emergence of native MSPs based on the assimilation of technologies in technological trajectories; how uncertainty influences incumbents to not follow those trajectories; how native MSPs create new demand; and how this demand eventually triggers the transformation process of incumbents to transform toward an MSP provider. We conduct a multiple-case study in the context of mobility services with three native MSP companies along with an incumbent that is transforming toward an MSP provider. The resulting process model shows that MSPs follow a process of sense-making and bricolage to assemble a service-oriented architecture, contrary to the incumbent who adopts technologies according to its institutional logic to improve existing products and processes.
