Abstract: In a longitudinal study of differences in framing an introduction of Grammarly, we find a gain framing to be more effective. Grammarly is an online spell-checking tool that can, for example, improve the text quality of students. We used the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology UTAUT to study framing effects on adoption behavior. In a survey experiment, we presented students with a description of Grammarly that was either framed towards potential gains or potential losses use would avoid. Contrary to prior findings in the context of IS security, we find a gain framing to be more effective. We discovered, however, that the framing was only effective after three months, which offers initial insights into the effects of framing in information systems and raises new questions. We plan to study this effect further in a follow-up study with a larger number of participants. Collapse

Abstract: The complex and interdependent nature of smart cities raises significant political, technical, and socioeconomic challenges for designers, integrators and organisations involved in administrating these new entities. An increasing number of studies focus on the security, privacy and risks within smart cities, highlighting the threats relating to information security and challenges for smart city infrastructure in the management and processing of personal data. This study analyses many of these challenges, offers a valuable synthesis of the relevant key literature, and develops a smart city interaction framework. The study is organised around a number of key themes within smart cities research: privacy and security of mobile devices and services; smart city infrastructure, power systems, healthcare, frameworks, algorithms and protocols to improve security and privacy, operational threats for smart cities, use and adoption of smart services by citizens, use of blockchain and use of social media. This comprehensive review provides a useful perspective on many of the key issues and offers key direction for future studies. The findings of this study can provide an informative research framework and reference point for academics and practitioners. Collapse

Abstract: Principles required for secure electronic voting using the Internet are known and published. Although the Internet voting functionalities and technologies are well-defined, none of the existing state-sponsored Internet voting approaches in use incorporate a total Internet-based system approach that includes voter registration, the voting process, and vote counting. The distributed Internet voting architecture concept discussed in this article uses a novel thin client approach to Internet voting. The architecture uses existing technologies and knowledge to create a viable whole system approach to Internet voting. This article describes various aspects and processes necessary to support an integrated approach. The application programming interface software for many of the critical functions was developed in Python and functionality tested. A virtual network, including a cloud-based functionality, was created and used to evaluate the various conceptual aspects of the proposed architecture. This included the concepts associated with programming and accessing smart cards, capturing and saving fingerprint data, structuring virtual private networks using tunneling and Internet Protocol Security, encrypting ballots using asymmetric encryption, using symmetric encryption for secret cookies, thin client interaction, and creating hash functions to be used within a blockchain structure in a Merkle tree architecture. The systems’ primary user targets are individuals remotely located from their home voting precincts and senior citizens who have limited mobility and mostly reside in assisted living facilities. The research supports the contention that a cybersecure Internet voting system that significantly reduces the opportunity for mail-in voter fraud, helps to ensure privacy for the voter, including nonrepudiation, nonattribution, receipt freeness, and vote acknowledgment can be created using existing technology. Abstract: The usage of different technologies and smart devices helps people to get medical services remotely for multiple benefits. Thus, critical and sensitive data is exchanged between a user and a doctor. When health data is transmitted over a common channel, it becomes essential to preserve various privacy and security properties in the system. Further, the number of users for remote services is increasing day-by-day exponentially, and thus, it is not adequate to deal with all users using the one server due to the verification overhead, server failure, and scalability issues. Thus, researchers proposed various authentication protocols for multi-server architecture, but most of them are vulnerable to different security attacks and require high computational resources during the implementation. To Tackle privacy and security issues using less computational resources, we propose a privacy-preserving mutual authentication and key agreement protocol for a multi-server healthcare system. We discuss the proposed scheme’s security analysis and performance results to understand its security strengths and the computational resource requirement, respectively. Abstract: Our study investigates differences in spending behavior among consumers using three alternative payment technologies: cash, credit cards, and stored value contactless smart cards. We provide a deeper understanding of how different payment mechanisms directly impact consumer spending behavior in a retailing context, their influences on customers’ psychology of consumption, and perceptions of payment technologies. We show that the payment process can do so by significantly affecting the subjective awareness of spending only. In contrast, the source of money can affect perceived payment security only. Both perceived security and convenience have little effect on spending behavior. Collapse

Abstract: Existing methodologies for identifying data quality problems are typically user-centric, where data quality requirements are first determined in a top-down manner following well-established design guidelines, organizational structures and data governance frameworks. In the current data landscape, however, users are often confronted with new, unexplored datasets that they may not have any ownership of, but that are perceived to have relevance and potential to create value for them. Such repurposed datasets can be found in government open data portals, data markets and several publicly available data repositories. In such scenarios, applying top-down data quality checking approaches is not feasible, as the consumers of the data have no control over its creation and governance. Hence, data consumers -data scientists and analysts -need to be empowered with data exploration capabilities that allow them to investigate and understand the quality of such datasets to facilitate well-informed decisions on their use. This research aims to develop such an approach for discovering data quality problems using generic exploratory methods that can be effectively applied in settings where data creation and use is separated. The approach, named LANG, is developed through a Design Science approach on the basis of semiotics theory and data quality dimensions. LANG is empirically validated in terms of soundness of the approach, its repeatability and generalizability. Collapse

Abstract: Controversial information technologies, such as biometrics and radio frequency identification, are perceived as having the potential to both benefit and undermine the well-being of the user. Given the type and/or amount of information these technologies have the capability to capture, there have been some concerns among users and potential users. However, prominent technology adoption models tend to focus on only the positive utilities associated with technology use. This research leverages net valence theories, which incorporate both positive and negative utilities, and context of use literature to propose a general framework that can be used for understanding consumer acceptance of controversial information technologies. The framework also highlights the importance of incorporating contextual factors that reflect the nuances of the controversial technologies and their specific context of use. We apply the framework to consumer acceptance of biometric identity authentication for banking transactions through automated teller machines. To that end, we contextualize the core construct of perceived benefits and concerns to this domain in a qualitative study of 402 participants, determine the appropriate contextual factors that are antecedents of the contextualized core constructs by examining relevant past research, and then develop and validate a contextualized research model in a quantitative study of 437 participants. Findings support the validity of our framework, with the model explaining 77.6% of the variance in consumers’ attitudes toward using biometrics for identity authentication at automated teller machines. Abstract: In recent years, the number of urban travel modes has increased significantly and now includes services such as carsharing, e-hailing, ridesharing and bikesharing. This development potentially contributes to more sustainable urban mobility, but also creates complexity for the customer. To simplify customer offerings, so-called multimodal mobility platforms (MMPs) have emerged, bundling the different mobility services to find the best route for the user. These platforms also function as marketplaces where customers can purchase mobility services from different suppliers. As part of this process, data is being generated, which can be utilized to yield valuable insights for suppliers and platform operators. In this paper, we describe the business model of MMPs and provide an overview of currently active solutions. Subsequently we present specific use cases, showing how suppliers can leverage the analytics possibilities of MMPs and how this affects the business model. Collapse

Abstract: a b s t r a c tIn the last few decades, there have been significant efforts in integrating information and communication technologies (ICT) into healthcare practices. This new paradigm commonly identified as electronic healthcare (e-health) allows provisioning of healthcare services at an affordable price to its consumers. However, there have been questions raised about the security of the sensitive information such as health records as well as the privacy of involving parties raising doubts on the minds of the general public. Thus, it is important to understand the potential security challenges in e-health systems and successfully resolve them by taking adequate measures to ensure fair utilization of such systems. In this paper, we have carried out a systematic state-of-the-art review over privacy preserving mechanisms that have been utilized on e-health solutions to achieve the security and privacy requirements while investigating to what extent such mechanisms are compatible with the identified requirements. Abstract: The smart card is a cloud-based device that enables participating healthcare organization’s greater access to a patient’s protected health information. This research investigates salient factors including the impact of communication using message framing on the likelihood to use the cards. We integrate the technology acceptance model theory (TAM) with the prospect theory, using message framing to assess the impact of gain-and loss-framed messages on patient’s likelihood to use. The conceptual model also adapts TAM by considering new constructs specific to the adoption of smart cards. Using data collected from 331 patients, we use logistic regression to investigate the adoption of this technology. Preliminary results indicate that concern for location monitoring and loss-framed messages have an adverse impact on a patient’s likelihood to adopt. Error prevention, smart card benefits, improved decision making and the social influence of healthcare actors have positive effects on the likelihood to use smart cards. Collapse
