Abstract: This study evaluated the capabilities of ChatGPT, a conversational artificial intelligence (AI) agent, to generate quality answers to exam questions that are indistinguishable from human-generated text, normally requiring high-level cognitive abilities. This potential capacity is a major threat to academic integrity since ChatGPT may be used for academic misconduct. To determine its capabilities, we asked 15 faculty members to assess a total of ten answers (two each) to an actual IS exam question, of which students wrote five, and ChatGPT generated five. The study found that ChatGPT can generate answers of generally good quality that may pass as human-written text by examiners. The contributions of the study lay in providing empirical results in a novel research area, providing recommendations for teachers, and suggesting ways forward for research. Collapse

Abstract: According to the theory of IT-mediated state-tracking, the intended and unintended consequences of constantly checking digital devices can be judged by the resulting problem of attention and by whether the checking led to information that served the individual's enduring goal. While this perspective offers numerous benefits over the common practice of labeling excessive information technology use as addiction, as of yet, the constructs of problem of attention (PoA) and service to enduring goal (SEG) lack empirical measures. Thus, this paper develops measurement scales for the constructs PoA and SEG following an established construct development methodology. We evaluate the measures' validity and reliability and demonstrate that PoA and SEG differ from existing similar concepts. With the help of our newly developed constructs the quality of constant checking habits can be assessed which enables future studies to scrutinize the theorized preventive role of self-control in the context of smartphone habits. Abstract: Digital distraction by smartphones may not only have negative effects in in the workplace but is also linked to problematic everyday behaviours such as physical movements, cognition and social interaction. While current research has made important steps towards understanding influencing factors of problematic smartphone use and their respective consequences, we still lack a holistic understanding of how different types of users react differently to smartphone-induced distractions and how they cope with them. To address this gap, we conducted a Q study among a representative sample of professionals and developed a typology. Our results suggest four types: bystanders, addicts, moderates and struggling integrators. Interestingly, our findings point to remarkable similarities. Users are in a state of constant distraction. Constantly checking and blurring boundaries between work and private sphere seem to be the norm these days, and users are even fully aware of their excessive smartphone use. Collapse

Previous studies have mainly focused on the effects of smartphone addiction, but they hardly focused on the cultural aspects leading to addiction. This study attempts to fill this void by shedding light on how Hofstede's four cultural dimensions, including 1) individualism-collectivism, 2) masculinity-femininity, 3) power distance, and 4) uncertainty avoidance, affect individuals' smartphone addictive behavior through the lens of attachment and coping theories. Abstract: Using self-reported measures for compulsive smartphone use introduces biases. According to the extended version of the social value framework, the extent to which self-reports are prone to social desirability responding (SDR) bias is further going to vary between individuals. The impact of these individual factors on self-reported smartphone use has not been researched extensively. We use an explorative mixed-method approach combining real-world smartphone usage data collected through mobile data donations and relate them to survey instruments capturing the users' ability to self-assess their use and self-reported compulsive use. We contribute to IS literature by employing cluster analysis to derive four distinct types of smartphone users based on their self-reporting behavior (unaware user, light user, heavy user, aware user). We show that, unlike demographic variables, screen time might be an indicator of whether users over-or underestimate their use and that high IT mindfulness and compulsive smartphone use can coexist. Specifically, we theorize that the major aspects of culture, namely uncertainty avoidance, individualism/collectivism, and power distance interact with one's personality aspects to determine the level of her major antecedents of smartphone addiction (i.e., self-regulation, anxious attachment style, and non-social app usage) thereby affecting the way she develops addictive behaviors. Abstract: Digital wellbeing features could potentially help users mitigate unintended effects of IT use such as smartphone addiction. However, knowledge about users’ perceptions of such features is still scarce. To bridge this gap, we applied structural topic modeling to analyze user reviews of 93 digital wellbeing apps from the Google Play Store. Our findings revealed three promising research areas: (1) mitigation mechanisms associated with self-monitoring, goal advancement, and change UI features, (2) the relationship between restrictiveness of block features, user characteristics, and addiction levels, and (3) the association of gamification with other features to promote behavior change. We also highlight the advantages of using structural topic modeling to analyze a large body of app reviews. Finally, we provide developers of digital wellbeing apps with feature requests extracted from the reviews. Collapse

Abstract: This study seeks to develop and test a theory-driven model of technology addiction within the context of smartphone use. Drawing on incentive-sensitisation theory, we proposed a nomological network that centres on a second-order factor of smartphone addiction from a psychological perspective. We empirically evaluated the proposed model against longitudinal data collected from 441 smartphone users. Our analysis from structural equation modelling indicates that our two-factor measurement of smartphone addiction (heightened desire and mobile social interaction) is a parsimonious alternative to the four-factor model. In addition, our findings suggest that addiction and its negative consequences differ in their effects on subsequent perceptions, such as perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment. We also found that personal innovativeness in information technology and a perception of loneliness explain a large amount of variation in smartphone addiction. Overall, the present study significantly contributes to the information systems literature by offering a refined model of smartphone addiction that effectively describes pathological smartphone use while correcting critical biases in existing models. Abstract: Based on protection motivation theory, this study aims to identify factors that influence the intention to decrease problematic smartphone game use, including the effects of a gaming habit and subjective norms. The research model is tested with a scenario-based survey method. Players' perceived threat refers to the negative consequences (eg, reduced performance or social isolation) that are caused by problematic smartphone game use. The findings indicate that under high fear appeals, threat appraisal creates fearful emotions about suffering from the negative consequences, which further reduces the gaming habit and activates the intention to decrease use. Self-efficacy in decreasing game playing, the response efficacy of decreasing usage in avoiding the threat and subjective norms effectively promote users' intention to decrease use. Moreover, response costs reduce the intention to decrease use. The findings provide insights into how to activate users' intention to decrease problematic use, and the resulting implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: We study youth materialism as an antecedent of problematic smartphone dependency among adolescents. Based on Uses and Gratifications theory and the I-PACE framework, we consider process- and social-oriented smartphones as mediators in the relationship between youth materialism and problematic smartphone dependency. Using data from 463 French late adolescents (mean 16.8 years; 58 % female), known as digital natives, we demonstrate that paths differ depending on gender. For girls, youth materialism is positively related to problematic smartphone dependency via social-oriented smartphone use, whereas this relationship is nonsignificant for boys. Moreover, youth materialism is positively related to problematic smartphone dependency via processoriented smartphone use for both boys and girls, but the relationship is stronger for boys than for girls. We discuss the implications of these results for business and social policies. Collapse
