Abstract: Self-regulated learning competencies are of increasing importance to ensure learning success in online learning environments. We investigate the use of digital social nudges in a self-reliant online learning situation to support learners in better managing their self-regulated learning behaviors. We ground our research on dual-process theory and social comparison theory to design social nudges. To evaluate our research model, we conduct an online experiment (N=226). The results show that social nudges positively impact learning outcomes mediated by self-regulated learning behaviors manifested using learning strategies. We found that positive emotions can further strengthen the positive effect of social nudges. Our results help to understand how social nudges can be efficiently used in online learning environments to support learners in better managing their learning processes and achieving learning outcomes. We open new chances for researchers and designers of online learning materials to support online learning processes. Collapse

Abstract: Social comparisons on traditional social networking sites (SNSs) such as Instagram can increase envy and reduce well-being. In this context, authenticity-driven SNSs such as BeReal intend to nudge their users towards sharing authentic and everyday content, thus reducing envy-inducing social comparisons occurring on traditional SNSs. However, it is unclear whether the content shared on authenticity-driven SNSs is indeed perceived as more authentic than on traditional SNSs, and how this affects SNS envy and well-being. Moreover, the relevance of perceived content authenticity next to self-esteem as an established envy antecedent remains unclear. Using two surveys, we found that BeReal content was perceived as more authentic than Instagram content. Furthermore, higher perceived content authenticity and self-esteem were associated with lower envy and increased affective well-being on both BeReal and Instagram, with self-esteem being a stronger predictor. This suggests that SNS design can reduce SNS envy, yet personal traits remain relevant predictors. Collapse

Abstract: Online gamified competition utilizes competition as a core gamification design element with affordances from wearables and mobile applications to track competitive activities and visualize information in an integrated way to shape users' exercise behaviors. However, a clear understanding of how online gamified competition cultivates exercise behaviors in different types of individuals is still lacking. We take into account the individual differences in exercise behaviors and categorize exercisers into three groups (active, moderate, and inactive) based on an adapted recency, frequency, and monetary value framework using key exercise behavior metrics. Theorizing online gamified competition as a means of social and temporal self-comparison, we examine the effect of performance feedback from two distinct modes of comparison (performance rankings and performance gap), and participants' relationships with their social comparison referents (i.e., rivalry intensity), on the exercise behaviors of different exerciser groups. Our results reveal that online gamified competition has differential effects on exercise behaviors across different exerciser groups. Specifically, we find that positive performance improvements are more motivational for active and moderate exercisers, while performance deterioration relative to historical exercise performance level is more discouraging for inactive exercisers. Performance rankings exhibit a more salient effect for moderate and inactive exercisers, and rivalry intensity has a stronger positive effect on active exercisers' exercise behavior. The strengthening effect of awareness affordances in mobile fitness apps is more notable with regard to the impact of rivalry intensity on moderate and inactive exercisers. We derive theoretical and practical implications of gamified information systems that use competition as a core design element for shaping the exercise behavior of individuals in different exerciser groups. Abstract: We explore how eLearners' engagement and performance can be influenced by digital nudges. We examine how personalized nudges with self-reference content and social comparison content encourage eLearners' engagement and performance. We perform an experiment with 515 students in a hybrid undergraduate course, randomly assigning participants to receive one of five types of digital nudges for certain course assignments. We examine how these nudges affect proactive assignment activity, assignment performance, as well as self-reported motivation, self-comparisons and perceived usefulness of nudges. We will model between-group differences and pre-post differences to examine the effect of personalized nudges on user engagement and performance, comparing participants who received different types of personalized nudges with participants who received generic (i.e. non-personalized) nudges. Our study extends existing nudge research to user engagement in eLearning environments. We also contribute to theories of self-reference, social norms, and social comparison on personalization of the learning process through digital nudges. Collapse

Abstract: Telework became a necessary work arrangement during the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, practical evidence even before the pandemic also suggests that telework can adversely affect teleworkers’ colleagues working in the office. Those regular office workers may experience negative emotions such as envy which, in turn, can impact work performance and turnover intention. In order to assess the adverse effects of telework on regular office workers, the study applies social comparison theory and suggests telework disparity as a new theoretical concept. From the perspective of regular office workers, perceived telework disparity is the extent to which they compare their office working situation with their colleagues’ teleworking situation and conclude that their teleworking colleagues are slightly better off than themselves. Based on social comparison theory, a model of how perceived disparity associated with telework causes negative emotions and adverse behaviors among regular office workers was developed. The data were collected in one organization with telework arrangements (N = 269). The results show that perceived telework disparity from the perspective of regular office workers increases their feelings of envy toward teleworkers and their job dissatisfaction, which is associated with higher turnover intentions and worse job performance. This study contributes to telework research by revealing a dark side of telework by conceptualizing telework disparity and its negative consequences for employees and organizations. For practice, the paper recommends making telework practices and policies as transparent as possible to realize the maximum benefits of telework. Collapse

Abstract: Theory is an essential part of design research and helps us to explain what we see or guide what we design. In the paper, we shed light on how kernel theories are used in developing design principles in Design Science Research (DSR). We do this by reporting on a systematic literature review, from which we have extracted a set of six mechanisms to operationalize kernel theory. Each mechanism consists of an activity (e.g., "transform to" or "derive from") and an application point (e.g., meta-requirements or design principles) representing wherein the chain of concepts the kernel theory was used. The paper reflects on what we have learned about the use of kernel theories and translates this into recommendations and issues for further research. We provide researchers with guidance to use kernel theories more efficiently and give a big picture of the possibilities of kernel theory operationalization. Collapse

Abstract: This study reveals the two sides of social word of mouth (SWOM) in social commerce (s-commerce). Based on the stimulus–organism–response paradigm, this study explores the effects of SWOM quality characteristics as the environmental stimuli on individuals’ social pressure and behavioral responses. We collected data from 1,152 scommerce users and found that source credibility can strengthen members’ psychological reactance and social risk, which consequently resist positive SWOM intention and promote negative SWOM intention, whereas the impacts of information quality differ. Moreover, we investigated the moderation role of member characteristics on their internal feelings of social pressure and SWOM intentions. Collapse

Abstract: Online social games, played within social networks or games requiring social interaction with peers, are revo lutionizing the nature of video-games due to their social aspect and the ability of users to compare their per formance with their friends or people in their network. Social comparison features, such as leaderboards, individual scores, achievement badges and level maps, are commonly used in online games to enforce the social interaction of players. However, one of the biggest challenges that the social game industry is currently facing is the ability to increase user enjoyment, and keep its players engaged in the games. To probe more deeply into whether and how players’ continuance intention is influenced by social comparison processes, we combine two theoretical lenses: social comparison theory and self-efficacy theory. We conducted real-world data collection to measure the impact of social comparisons in player perceived enjoyment, online social gaming self-efficacy and game continuance. The results indicate that upward identification and downward contrast are the most influ ential comparison elements in game continuance. The results of these two comparisons have significant impli cations for both the theoretical application of social comparison in online settings and for the practical implications of future game design. Abstract: Envy constitutes a serious issue on Social Networking Sites (SNSs), as this painful emotion can severely diminish individuals' well-being. With prior research mainly focusing on the affective consequences of envy in the SNS context, its behavioral consequences remain puzzling. While negative interactions among SNS users are an alarming issue, it remains unclear to which extent the harmful emotion of malicious envy contributes to these toxic dynamics. This study constitutes a first step in understanding malicious envy's causal impact on negative interactions within the SNS sphere. Within an online experiment, we experimentally induce malicious envy and measure its immediate impact on users' negative behavior towards other users. Our findings show that malicious envy seems to be an essential factor fueling negativity among SNS users and further illustrate that this effect is especially pronounced when users are provided an objective factor to mask their envy and justify their norm-violating negative behavior. Abstract: Online reviews systems try to motivate users to invest effort in writing a review since their success crucially depends on the reviews’ helpfulness. However, other factors might influence future reviewing effort as well. We analyze whether existing reviews matter for future reviewing effort. Analyzing a dataset from Google Maps which covers 40 sights across Europe with over 37,000 reviews, we find that reviewing effort – measured by the propensity to additionally write a textual review and (textual) review length – is negatively related to the number of existing reviews. Further, also the rating distribution of existing reviews matters: If there is a large discrepancy between the existing ratings and the own rating, we observe more additional textual reviews. Our findings provide important implications for review system designers regarding the presentation of review metrics: changing or omitting the display of review metrics for potential reviewers might increase their reviewing effort.
