Abstract: Social media networks (SMNs) are increasingly used in professional management of knowledge workers and related assets. However, the factors affecting behavioral trends and activity levels in these networks are not well understood. Although social and cognitive theories can help to explain human behavior in traditional social networks, their application to SMNs has not been validated. Traditional social network modeling techniques may not accurately predict real-world SMN activities. This research developed a temporal graph framework for in telligence extraction in SMNs. Theory-based, data-driven models (Conformity Model (COM), Recency-Primacy Model (REM), Trend Interaction Model (TIM), Periodic Interaction Model (PIM)) were developed based on the framework to capture various aspects of user behavior: conformity effect, recency, primacy, periodicity, and dynamic trend. The models capture the activity history and dynamically combine pricing information to enhance predictive accuracy. Using data of 83,536 GitHub software repositories on cryptocurrency, this article reports the results of experiments that compare the models’ performance in predicting SMN activities over time. Experi mental results show that the model (REM) that captures recency/primacy effects of human cognitive processing outperformed other models in 9 (out of 18) measures pertaining to engagement, contribution, influence, and popularity. Primacy plays a dominant role in predicting engagement, contribution, and popularity, whereas recency plays a key role in predicting influence. Short-term trend (modeled with TIM) was found to yield significantly better performance on predicting user contribution. The models also outperformed an integrated machine learning (IML) model by most measures. Overall, the effects modeled by REM and TIM were found to be more significant than the effects modeled by COM, PIM, and IML. The research contributes to enhancing un derstanding of SMN behavior, developing new models to simulate and predict SMN activities, and designing new artifacts for information systems practitioners to manage knowledge assets and to extract SMN intelligence. Abstract: This paper focuses on social influence in customer-robot interactions. Drawing on social impact theory and the computers-are-social-actors (CASA) paradigm, we argue that customers' reluctance to provide information to a service robot decreases when other customers exhibit high information disclosure. The effect of demonstrated information disclosure on customers' reluctance to provide information is enhanced by the application of social norms. The results also show that social influence is stronger in customer-robot interactions than in customer-employee interactions. This article demonstrates the potential of social influence to reduce reluctance towards service robots, which has both theoretical and managerial implications. We extend existing research on the imitation of robot behavior with the imitation of user behavior, and discuss the ethical implications of customers mindlessly following other customers in customer-robot interactions. Abstract: Employees’ compliance with Information Systems Security Policies (ISP) is critical for protecting organizational data. Both the technical side and the social aspects of IT-use were shown to have significant influence on ISP-compliance. However, they have been mostly studied in isolation, despite the literature’s emphasis on the socio-technical nature of security. Also, while the technical side has been extensively explored, there is a scarcity of research on the social mechanisms that underlie ISP-compliance. Here, we aim at bridging the gap between the technical and social sides of compliance. We also build upon Social Impact Theory to provide a more nuanced understanding of the social influence on ISP-compliance. We suggest that transparency of use is associated with the three pivotal elements of social influence, namely, perceived strength, immediacy, and number of influencing sources, which trigger normative and informational forces towards compliance. Abstract: An ongoing discussion in organizational studies has focused on the path-dependent nature of organizational reputation. To date, however, there has been little explanation about when and why some constituents’ reputation judgments remain stable, whereas others are more prone to change. We contribute to this research by developing a relational theory of reputational stability and change. Our fundamental argument is that differences in constituent-organization relationships, as well as in the reputational communities that surround these relationships, affect the stability and change of reputation judgments. First, we highlight three relationship characteristics—favorability, history, and directness—and theorize that the reputation judgments of constituents with more unfavorable, longer, and more direct relationships with an organization are more stable, whereas the reputation judgments of constituents with more favorable, shorter, and more indirect relationships with the organization are less stable. We then develop the concept of reputational communities as a key source of indirect information about organizations. We highlight that the immediacy, size, and level of agreement within reputational communities affect how influential they are in changing individual constituents’ reputation judgments. Specifically, we propose that more immediate and larger reputational communities with a higher level of agreement are most likely to change individual constituents’ reputation judgments, whereas more distant and smaller reputational communities with a lower level of agreement are least likely to do so. Overall, we position constituents’ relationships with an organization and the communities that surround these relationships as central elements for understanding reputational stability and change. Abstract: Informative contributions are critical for the healthy development of online Q&A communities, which have gained increasing popularity in solving personalized open-ended problems. However, little is known about whether past contribution behaviors and corresponding community feedbacks received affect the characteristics of subsequent contributions. Drawing upon the social cognitive theory, we examine the learning effects on users' knowledge contribution behaviors. Specifically, we focus on two types of learning effects: enactive learning from one's past contribution experience and vicarious learning from observation of others' performances in a question thread. Using a dataset collected from one of the largest online Q&A communities in China, we find that the length feature of past user contributions that garner highly positive feedback, no matter through enactive or vicarious learning, would influence the informativeness of subsequent contributions in the community. These learning effects are more effective for users with higher social status. The enactive learning effect is stronger for contributors with higher social status. For the vicarious learning on higher-status contributors, the influence of high-vote long answers is stronger, but the high-vote short answers show a weaker effect. Our research provides a deeper understanding of knowledge contribution behaviors in online knowledge communities and guides for establishing a healthy knowledge contribution environment. Collapse

Abstract: Software is the lifeblood of technological advancement, and it progresses not only through emerging technologies, but also through the contributions of new generations of developers who have distinct technology-related experiences. We describe our qualitative investigation into how developers, who began regularly using social networking technology at an early age (referred to as precocious users), demonstrate distinct expectations about the goals of software development. We advance a theoretical perspective that explains how the increasingly socially infused nature of networking applications shapes generations of individuals — some of whom will go on to become creative developers in the software industry. Our perspective suggests software organizations can leverage developers who have been precocious users of more recent social networking technologies to reinforce intuitive usage, promote social impact, and re-energize experimentation and contribution to the software community. Our results also offer a comprehensive set of development goals that focus attention towards contemporary expectations about challenging usability and contribution to software ecosystems. We conclude by discussing how our methodological steps, data collection, and data analysis procedures empower future research to explore generational shifts in the career perceptions and competencies of the digital workforce. Abstract: Along with the rapid proliferation of Social Networking Sites (SNSs), there is renewed discussion on the influence of substantial and highly interactive digital social circles. There is much debate about an individual's interactions with his/her digital social circles and how s/he forms behaviours as a result of such interactions. This study hypothesizes two salient types of actions that individuals are likely to engage in, as a consequence of social influence from SNSs: symbolic (e.g. #activism) and substantive actions (e.g. real activism).
