Abstract: Employees play a vital role in organizational information security posture. Most security breaches involve human elements such as stolen credentials, phishing scams, misuse, or simple errors from employees. As the threat landscape continues to put pressure on this aspect of organizational information security, there is an increasing need to effectively motivate employees towards desirable security attitudes and outcomes. Social influence has been found to help shape employees' information security attitudes. However, there is limited understanding of the roles different motivational processes can play in this context -which may have differential effect of employee attitudes towards security. In this study we use Kelman's social influence theory which proposes that an individual's attitudes are influenced by referent others through three processes -compliance, identification, and internalization. Abstract: Reward-based crowdfunding platforms are increasingly incorporating donation options, allowing backers to financially support campaigns without receiving any tangible rewards in return. Although this option seems to create a novel fundraising channel, our quasi-natural experimental study highlights the potential negative impacts of individual donation occurrences, which ultimately lead to reduced total raised funds, as substantiated by robust empirical evidence. We explore two primary mechanisms responsible for the adverse effect. First, the bystander effect, where prior donations discourage potential backers from supporting the campaign, causing them to either forgo reward purchases or decrease their contribution amounts. Second, the social conformity effect, in which prior donations shape backers' perceptions of social norms and consequently lower their support levels. By offering a comprehensive understanding of behavioral dynamics in crowdfunding, our study enriches the literature on the design and management of crowdfunding platforms and provides valuable insights for industry practitioners. Abstract: This paper focuses on social influence in customer-robot interactions. Drawing on social impact theory and the computers-are-social-actors (CASA) paradigm, we argue that customers' reluctance to provide information to a service robot decreases when other customers exhibit high information disclosure. The effect of demonstrated information disclosure on customers' reluctance to provide information is enhanced by the application of social norms. The results also show that social influence is stronger in customer-robot interactions than in customer-employee interactions. This article demonstrates the potential of social influence to reduce reluctance towards service robots, which has both theoretical and managerial implications. We extend existing research on the imitation of robot behavior with the imitation of user behavior, and discuss the ethical implications of customers mindlessly following other customers in customer-robot interactions. Abstract: Despite technological development and individuals using technologies more than ever, their engagement in e-participation initiatives remains low. A close assessment indicates that simply setting up platforms for e-participation does not inevitably result in online civic engagement. Addressing this gap, this study goes beyond technological factors to consider the citizen-government fit to influence online civic engagement. Using the theoretical lens of person-organization fit, self-efficacy, and the social influence theory, this study argues that (1) the congruence between citizens and their government (i.e., C-G fit) will positively impact online civic engagement and (2) this relationship will be mediated by citizens' commitment and moderated by e-participation-specific self-efficacy and social networking site usage. Data was collected from six interviews and 14 survey responses as the preliminary study. The data showed an initial indication in support of the research hypotheses. Abstract: In online environments (i.e., product review sites in our case), consumers are increasingly interacting and socializing with many "strangers" (i.e., online crowds) as well as sharing personal and product information. Drawing from social norms theory, we examine how the multiple aspects of online crowds affect their self-disclosure behaviors as they provide online reviews and investigate the extent to which prior experience moderates this relationship. Our analysis of data from a leading apparel rental site in the United States uncovers that individuals are inclined to conform to the self-disclosure behaviors of a crowd and divulge more personal information as self-disclosure variance within the group increases. Conversely, individuals are more likely to conceal personal information as a review page becomes crowded. The findings reveal that a reviewer's prior experience of writing a review on the website weakens conformity behavior and reduces the effects of crowdedness. The prior experience also positively interacts with self-disclosure variance in a crowd. Based on these results, we present theoretical implications to literature on social norms and privacy, prior experience, and online reviews. This study also has managerial implications for firms interested in content generation by online reviewers and in review systems where user-generated content is essential. Collapse

Abstract: Online social cues that utilize user-generated data, such as user reviews and product ratings, have become one of the key factors influencing online user behavior and decisions. Online users who shared their reviews and ratings about a product (or a seller) become an abstract reference group to a focal user interested in the same product. This study focuses on sponsored search results (SSRs), a type of unsolicited information that matches users’ search queries and receives high evaluations from prior consumers. We investigate the effects of positive social cues on alleviating users’ avoidance responses toward an encountered SSR when searching for a product in a C2C e-commerce context. We synthesize the avoidance literature and identify three forms of SSR avoidance, namely, cognitive, behavioral, and affective avoidance. We apply users’ implicit concerns on SSRs to explain users’ avoidance of an encountered SSR. In addition, we extend social influence theory to online settings where abstract reference groups are posited to trigger social influence. We examine how and under what conditions the three forms of SSR avoidance can be reduced by various positive online social cues (i.e., product- and seller-related). We conduct three laboratory experiments. Results attest to users’ implicit concerns on SSRs and their avoidance of SSRs and reveal different effects of various social cues on reducing the three forms of SSR avoidance. This study uncovers the theoretical mechanisms of social influence on reducing SSR avoidance in online settings. It also offers practical implications for online search service providers to help online users’ decision making in their search process. Collapse

Abstract: Although collective trolling poses a growing threat to both individuals and virtual community owners, the information systems (IS) literature lacks a rich theorization of this phenomenon. To address the research gaps, we introduce the concept of we-intention to capture the collective nature of collective trolling in virtual communities. We also integrate the social identity model of deindividuation effects (SIDE) and situational action theory to invoke the sociotechnical perspective in theorizing collective trolling in virtual communities. The objective of this study is to use the sociotechnical perspective to understand the we-intention to participate in collective trolling in virtual communities. We test our proposed model using data gathered from 377 Reddit users. Our moderated mediation analysis elaborates how technical elements (i.e., anonymity of self and anonymity of others) influence the we-intention to participate in collective trolling via individualbased social elements (i.e., perceived online disinhibition and social identity), with an environmentbased social element (i.e., the absence of capable guardianship) as a boundary condition. We contribute to research by explaining collective trolling in virtual communities from the groupreferent intentional action perspective and sociotechnical perspective. Abstract: The pervasiveness of multiple types of digital footprints recorded on e-commerce platforms have added fuel to the design of personalized recommender systems. Despite the abundance, consumers' digital footprints can be confounded with many causes, both internally and externally. To disentangle the causes driving consumers' behaviors, a causal recommendation method, i.e., DIPC, based on cause disentanglement at various consumption stages is proposed in the paper. Referring to related theories, interest and item popularity are recognized as causes driving consumer behaviors in the need recognition stage, while behaviors in the pre-purchase and purchase stages are assumed to be motivated by interest and conformity. To rigorously evaluate the performance of DIPC, extensive experiments are conducted on a real-world dataset with carefully designed intervention in terms of modeling multiple digital footprints and causality learning. The results show that DIPC outperforms all baselines significantly and possesses good interpretability, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed causal recommendation method. Collapse

Abstract: This study focuses on the effect of prior average ratings of a product on subsequent online ratings, and we further analyze whether culture moderates this effect. The anchoring effect theory and cultural dimensions theory serve as the theoretical foundations for our investigation. To our best knowledge, we are the first to introduce the anchoring effect theory into the online review context. This study is also among the first to investigate how culture influences customers’ online evaluations. Empirical results suggest that the prior average rating positively influences subsequent customers’ posted ratings, and this positive influence is significantly moderated by culture. Besides theoretical contributions, our insights may also strategically benefit online sellers by increasing customer satisfaction and improving long-term sales. Collapse
