Abstract: Frequent and habitual engagement with social media can reinforce certain activities such as sharing, clicking hyperlinks, and liking, which may be performed with insufficient cognition. In this study, we aimed to examine the associations between personality traits, habits, and information processing to identify social media users who are susceptible to phishing attacks. Our experimental data consisted of 215 social media users. The results revealed two important findings. First, users who scored high on the personality traits of extraversion, agree­ ableness, and neuroticism were more likely to engage in habitual behaviors that increase their susceptibility to phishing attacks, whereas those who scored high on conscientiousness were less likely. Second, users who habitually react to social media posts were more likely to apply heuristic processing, making them more sus­ ceptible to phishing attacks than those who applied systematic processing. Abstract: Social media addiction during public unrest is a known phenomenon. Prior research has offered several drivers and theories to explain users' addictive behavior in this context. However, those investigations barely view this behavior from the lens of immigrant populations, a group of users whose access to information about unrest in their home country, unlike others, is solely limited to online platforms such as social media. In this research-in-progress paper, we aim to address this gap in the literature. Specifically, we draw our arguments on the opponent-process and belongingness theories and develop a theoretical model to test the moderating role of immigrants' sense of belonging to their home country on the opposing effects of social contribution and feeling of withdrawal experienced by immigrants during public unrest. Finally, we conclude the paper by discussing its potential theoretical and practical contributions. Collapse

Abstract: With growing investment into the metaverse or metaverses, the required hardware and software is becoming more powerful and cheaper, and tech firms’ expectations for this market are high. In parallel, consumer brands are claiming their digital real estate as consumers seek experiences beyond those available in the real world. Having people engage on this platform is important for all stakeholders. To address this much needed level of engagement, this editorial introduces the concept of immersive time (ImT), which is described as the conscious, deliberate, and dedicated time spent using a headset and other accessories to continually engage in the meta­ verse, presumably at least in part to escape the real world. Once in ImT, there are rather limited opportunities to multitask and simultaneously devote time to the activities within the metaverse and the real world. As such, while prolonged ImT is important for the stakeholders, it is imperative to recognize the inherent dark sides of this time. Understanding ImT has important implications for researchers and practitioners (including tech de­ velopers, and brand and marketing managers who contemplate their metaverse strategies), and policymakers who aim to ensure customers’ safety when immersing in the metaverse. This editorial concludes with an agenda for future research to enhance our understanding of consumer behaviors and engagement in the metaverse. Collapse

Abstract: This study answers the call for a longitudinal view of addiction to hedonic information systems (IS) use by proposing a process model of its development, in the context of social networking site use. Through inductive and iterative analyses of primary data collected via interviews and surveys, and secondary data in the form of narrative accounts, we explain the process of addiction development via three phases associated with nominal, compulsive, and addicted use. In each phase, combinations of salient individual needs, affordances, technology features, IS use behaviors, and control mechanism outcomes (successful or unsuccessful) influence an individual’s trajectory toward hedonic IS use addiction. Drawing on cybernetic theory, we explain the role of users’ control mechanisms. We show how deficiencies related to the sensing, comparing, or regulating act, in conjunction with salient affordances, influence the development of addiction. The findings extend variance-based research on IS use addiction. Abstract: The current study take a techno-centric view and explore the role of technology in social media addiction from the affordance perspective. Drawing on the needs-affordances-features perspective and fit theory, we conceptualize the relationship between a user's need and a social media affordance as the needaffordance fit. Specifically, the current study investigates how this fit influences user behavior on social media, particularly social media addiction. The current study aims to generate several important implications. First, by discussing how a social media affordance fits with a user's need and eventually leads to social media addiction, this study underscores the role of technology in social media addiction at the forefront. Secondly, focusing on the potential outcomes of social media addiction, the need-affordance fit can serve as a mapping tool for organizations and individuals to identify what needs are driving behavior based on the most commonly used affordances. Abstract: Social media platforms generate huge profits from targeted advertising by collecting mas sive amounts of data from their users, usually referred to as data harvesting. However, practitioners from the social media industry suggest that data harvesting hurts users by promoting social media addiction and the spread of misinformation. Therefore, policy makers have recently been considering regulating social media platforms. This paper investigates how imposing the regulation on data harvesting impacts social media plat forms and users by developing a gametheoretic model. Our main finding shows that while the objective of the regulation on data harvesting is to discourage platforms from collecting a massive amount of data from the users, imposing the regulation may some times increase the data harvesting levels and profits of social media platforms. We con tribute to the Information Systems literature by broadening the knowledge of the impact of the government's regulation on social media platforms and users. Collapse

Abstract: Attachment to social media is a serious problem for iGen users. A recent study of social media use by 10,000 iGen users found 36% were on social media for 2 to 4 h daily, and 11% for more than 5 h. Further, users who reported spending more time on social media were significantly more likely to rate their mental health as poor. With the increasing awareness of the dire consequences of addiction to social media, calls have been made to take action against its continued proliferation. Instead of bans on social media, we call for mild policy-based interventions to guide appropriate positive social media use, while minimizing harmful experiences. Attachment Theory is adopted to understand the individual values and feelings of attachment of iGen to social media. We then use the Value-focused Thinking process to organize values to define iGen’s attachment objectives. In a final synthesis we present a mild policy-based interventions approach to suggest policy interventions and techniques for social media use to combat over-attachment by iGen users. Collapse

Abstract: The proliferation of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have revolutionized the way people communicate, consume, and share information. As a result, social media addiction, a type of behavioral addiction related to the compulsive use of social media and associated with adverse outcomes, has been discussed by scholars and practitioners alike. Despite the abundance of research published on social media addiction, this literature is fragmented, and there is no synthesis of the drivers and outcomes of this behavior. In this study, we use the cognitive-behavioral model of pathological use and conduct a systematic review of social media addiction literature from 20082019. Based on the review of 132 papers, we propose a framework that integrates prior findings. Our review reveals several avenues for future research on this increasingly prominent research topic.
