Abstract: Misinformation has been on the rise, and in many cases, misinformation is intentionally shared for political reasons. This phenomenon first started with political news but now has spread in consumer products. To understand how misinformation sharing occurs differently between politized versus nonpoliticized products, we conducted an experiment and survey 800 respondents in an online crowdsourcing platform. The results show that for a politicized product, individual bias disposition and social norms indeed sway an individual's evaluation of information credibility, her trust and intention to share. However, this effect is not observed for non-politicized products. This call for more research to understand the role of social norms in stopping the spread of misinformation. Collapse

Abstract: This study analyses how the effect of a social norm nudge changes when its function and purpose become transparent. For this purpose, a quantitative, experimental online survey was conducted among 474 participants in the context of voluntary CO2 offset. The non-transparent social norm nudge and the one with information solely on its function showed no significant effect on behaviour. However, the social norm nudge disclosing both, its function and purpose, did effect behaviour positively. Based on the results, it is recommended that social norm nudges are made transparent in practice. The recipient of a social norm nudge should therefore be explicitly notified about its function and purpose. Collapse

Abstract: The internet and social media are constantly evolving and providing innovations for communication. Persuasive communication, like advertisements, can be adapted to peoples' personal preferences and desires based on tracked data. Emotions have been found to play an important role within persuasion. Based on theoretical assumptions of framing and affective priming, we hypothesize different effects of positive and negative messages and mood within social media advertising. To investigate the reception of ads regarding their persuasiveness in sustainability campaigns we conducted an online experiment using a 2x2 between design (N=147) measuring ad evaluation and behavioral intention. Our findings revealed that wording can be an influential factor in persuasive messages towards more sustainability. Positive framing led to a better ad evaluation than negative wording. However, behavioral intention was not affected and there was no enhancing effect of recipients' environmental awareness. Collapse

Abstract: Reward-based crowdfunding platforms are increasingly incorporating donation options, allowing backers to financially support campaigns without receiving any tangible rewards in return. Although this option seems to create a novel fundraising channel, our quasi-natural experimental study highlights the potential negative impacts of individual donation occurrences, which ultimately lead to reduced total raised funds, as substantiated by robust empirical evidence. We explore two primary mechanisms responsible for the adverse effect. First, the bystander effect, where prior donations discourage potential backers from supporting the campaign, causing them to either forgo reward purchases or decrease their contribution amounts. Second, the social conformity effect, in which prior donations shape backers' perceptions of social norms and consequently lower their support levels. By offering a comprehensive understanding of behavioral dynamics in crowdfunding, our study enriches the literature on the design and management of crowdfunding platforms and provides valuable insights for industry practitioners. Abstract: With the rise of socio-political movements seeking to improve women's circumstances in society, research on gender has been continuously growing in Information Systems (IS) research. Despite this growth, critical-ethical perspectives on gender power dynamics are lacking. Therefore, we critically investigate the perceptions of male and female IS developers on gender inequalities using feminist ethics of power. We find that interviewees coincide in the belief that inequalities are improving and that gender is not a limiting factor of competencies. However, men and women deviate regarding perceptions of respect and validation, equality, and the drivers that (re-)produce disparities. Additionally, women exhibit fragmented conceptualizations of inclusion. Through a critical analysis of these findings, we expose ethical dilemmas that arise from these contradictory perceptions of gender inequalities and propose pathways for transforming the prevailing order. Our study contributes by advancing a broader perspective on inequalities through the lens of feminist ethics of power. Collapse

Abstract: Social commerce (s-commerce) has gained prominence with advances in social media and social networking technologies over the last decade. Prior research has employed diverse theoretical perspectives to understand and explain consumer behavior within s-commerce but has also produced inconsistent results. This study integrates different theoretical perspectives including trust, social support, and social presence. The research portrays an integrated research model involving factors that impact behavioral intention and use behavior of s-commerce consumers whilst synthesizing prior empirical findings. A meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) method was used to synthesize 189 findings reported in 68 s-commerce studies and to analyze the structural model. Our findings show that trust and informational support have positive effects on behavioral intention while trust and emotional support have positive effects on use behavior. Furthermore, our findings highlight that behavioral intention influences use behavior and mediates the effect of trust and informational support on use behavior. The implications for research and practice are discussed in detail. Collapse

Abstract: The increasing use of information technology artifacts in daily life makes security a shared responsibility of both users and companies. In recent years, increasing a user’s objective (i.e., actual) security knowledge and providing applications with more secure default settings appear among the most ubiquitous tools companies use to broaden their efforts to help users make more secure decisions. Examining both solutions matters because they are widely used, cost effective, and understood by many security practitioners. Additionally, default settings and users’ objective knowledge provide anchors for decision-making. However, human errors and insecure default settings are increasing and raising further questions about the efficacy of such efforts. Using the theory of bounded ra­ tionality, we investigated the role of objective, subjective (i.e., self-assessed) security knowledge, and default settings security level on the overall decision security. We found that objective security knowledge can lead to secure decisions when paired with high subjective security knowledge. In the absence of the latter, objective security knowledge is unable to lead to better security decisions. Furthermore, subjective security knowledge reduces the extent to which users fully accept default security settings, thereby mitigating bias toward insecure default settings. Collapse

Abstract: Decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) offer a novel paradigm, fostering members' decentralized cooperation towards collective goals. Central to this are token rewards, aligning individuals' interests with DAO's collective goals to enhance cooperation. We introduce a theoretical model proposing that DAO members' perceived social norms impact the effectiveness of this token-based interest alignment mechanism by influencing members' tendencies to hold tokens, subsequently affecting their cooperative behaviors. By analyzing data collected from the prominent social DAO, Steem, our empirical findings validated this proposition. Our study stands at the forefront of elucidating the complex interplay between economic incentives and social motivations in DAOs, particularly the interest alignment mechanism. Moreover, based on the basic rationales of profit-sharing arrangements in traditional organizations, we transpose this understanding to the context of DAOs, offering a nuanced articulation of the interest alignment mechanism, which is absent in the current DAO literature. Abstract: Help-request referral (HRR) campaigns are being increasingly adopted by online service providers to attract online traffic and engage new users. In these campaigns, participants are required to collect a specific amount of help from their social network in exchange for attractive rewards. Participants often face challenges in obtaining positive feedback from their social networking groups due to the diffusion of responsibility. Based on the triangle model of responsibility, this study proposes and empirically tests a research model that examines two key determinants (i.e., request personalization and relational closeness) of recipients’ perceived responsibility that further shape their responses to HRR. Our field experiment empirically supports the research hypotheses. Overall, this study enriches the literature on online social referrals by focusing on HRR, where social referrals are broadcasted and senders reap referral benefits. The study also provides practical insights for HRR designers and social networking service providers. Collapse

Abstract: Frequent and habitual engagement with social media can reinforce certain activities such as sharing, clicking hyperlinks, and liking, which may be performed with insufficient cognition. In this study, we aimed to examine the associations between personality traits, habits, and information processing to identify social media users who are susceptible to phishing attacks. Our experimental data consisted of 215 social media users. The results revealed two important findings. First, users who scored high on the personality traits of extraversion, agree­ ableness, and neuroticism were more likely to engage in habitual behaviors that increase their susceptibility to phishing attacks, whereas those who scored high on conscientiousness were less likely. Second, users who habitually react to social media posts were more likely to apply heuristic processing, making them more sus­ ceptible to phishing attacks than those who applied systematic processing.
