Abstract: The poorer cancer outcomes experienced by Indigenous Australians result from reduced access to culturally appropriate support services. Living with cancer is linked to a high prevalence of social isolation, stress, anxiety, and consequently experiencing lower level of psychosocial well-being. Resources to support the psychosocial well-being of Indigenous people with cancer must be available at the point of need. The web is increasingly becoming a viable platform for delivery of health services that are accessible at any time and from anywhere. There is a lack of culturally and language-appropriate web-based health services for Indigenous Australians with cancer and this paper which is a part of a bigger study informs the development of a culturally and language-appropriate smartphone-based support intervention for improving the psychological well-being of Indigenous Australian people with cancer. Drawing on evidence from research across diverse fields and applying a multi-theory perspective, we developed a conceptual framework that depicts the features needed for a smartphone based health intervention to effectively support Indigenous Australians living with cancer and enable them to obtain culturally appropriate cancer care support and experience better psychosocial well-being. Abstract: A cancer diagnosis takes a great toll on the health of both patients and their carers. Online cancer support groups, including cancer support Facebook groups, have evolved as new sources of support for cancer patients and their carers. However, little is known about how cancer carers make use of such online resources. Most research attention has been paid to Facebook support groups for cancer patients. This research is designed to determine the content of communication in Ovarian Facebook pages, and the impact of those communications on carers of ovarian cancer patients. The study will contribute to knowledge about how cancer patients' carers use Facebook cancer support groups and the impact of this use on their health and quality of life. Collapse

Abstract: Poor cancer outcomes experienced by Indigenous Australians result from advanced cancer stages at diagnosis, poorer uptake of and adherence to treatments, higher levels of co-morbidity, and poorer access to inclusive and culturally appropriate care compared with non-Indigenous Australians. Socio-economics and social support can mitigate these problems. Technology-based interventions hold considerable promise for enhancing social support. This paper asks what are the key features of a mobile health application designed to improve the social support and consequently psychological well-being of Indigenous Australians living with cancer? To answer this question, a comprehensive literature review of studies conducted in information systems and health disciplines has been undertaken and a theoretical model is proposed. This study contributes to the existing knowledge base through the development of a new theoretical model and the introduction of the features of a mobile health application that may have a positive impact among Indigenous Australian cancer patients’ psychological well-being. Abstract: Interactive and communicative situations within social environments are prerequisites for learning in collaboration. Synchronous communication offers the opportunity to actively engage students in collaborative learning activities. This paper is based on an action research conducted within a learning project including synchronous communication between students in lower secondary school. The students collaborate in a cross-border project involving Danish, Norwegian and Swedish students. The aim of the paper is to analyse the conditions for participation in synchronous online learning. collaborative learning. The findings are derived from the empirical study within a three-part learning project using synchronous online communication. The conclusion is that the conditions for participation in synchronous online learning are authenticity, motivation, confidence, preparation and teacher engagement. Collapse

Abstract: This paper explores the philosophical origins of appropriation of Information Systems (IS) using Marxian and other socio-cultural theory. It provides an in-depth examination of appropriation and its application in extant IS theory. We develop a three-tier model using Marx’s foundational concepts and from this generate four propositions that we test in an empirical example of IS in anesthesia. Using Marxian theory, this paper seeks common ground among existing theories of technology appropriation in IS research. This work contributes to IS research by (1) opening philosophical discussions on appropriation and the human ↔ technology nexus, (2) drawing on these varying perspectives to propose a general conceptualization of technology appropriation and (3) providing a starting point towards a general causal model of technology appropriation. Abstract: This paper reports some recent findings of a continuing international study that is investigating computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) processes among a community engaged in a master’s program in e-learning. This study presents results of an analysis of learning and tutoring interactions in three different groups. Each group was presented with a different model to facilitate collaborative interaction, using specially designed groupware. The empirical analysis used two compatible methods: content analysis (CA) and critical event recall (CER). The study reveals the differentiated nature of participants’ interactions: the results show that the groups who used the management roles and progressive enquiry models were more actively engaged in learning and tutoring interactions than the group without an additional structure (NAS). Abstract: Virtual teams are developing rapidly in organisations of the new economy. As educators, we have a responsibility to ensure that our students are appropriately prepared for work in the virtual workspace, where teams may cross time, geographical, and cultural boundaries. In this article, the culturally sensitive theory of sociocultural learning is combined with GSS (Group Support Systems) to illustrate how cross-cultural, globally distributed virtual teams of students located in The Netherlands, Greece, and Hong Kong work on vested interest projects. Finally, a set of critical success factors that inform virtual learning contexts is derived from our findings and recommendations are made for operational practice in the virtual work space.
