Abstract: Research Question (RQ) Scoping refers to defining and refining a research question before conducting research. This step is crucial for ensuring the relevance and focus of the study, particularly in Design Science Research (DSR), where problems and solutions develop gradually. Literature reviews are a traditional method for comprehending the problem and determining key questions; however, they can be time-consuming and not worth it at the onset when lashing out in the dark. NLP chatbots such as ChatGPT can serve as a cost-effective alternative to clearing the way due to their capability to interact with users in a natural language-based manner and provide intuitive responses. The requirements for RQ Scoping extend beyond conversational support to include a framework for a sustained and iterative scoping process. An inquiry framework is necessary to guide and assist students and supervisors in fully harnessing the potential of NLP chatbots. This work incorporates ChatGPT into an inquiry framework for RQ Scoping, with mind maps as the visualization and the 5 Why technique as the inquiry strategy. Contributions include Design Principles, an IT artifact, and a Technology Acceptance Model evaluation (n = 9). Regarding perceived usefulness, the results indicate agreement on the intervention’s effectiveness in maintaining focus. However, there is less enthusiasm for mind maps as a communication tool. Abstract: Freight transportation is increasingly connected with the automation of fleet assets by intelligent systems. This study emerges from the consortium research project Gaia-X 4 ROMS, which aims to develop a comprehensive approach for smart freight fleets in the field of parcel deliveries. Within this project, a novel type of multi-agent system (MAS) for the management of freight fleets is being developed. To determine the state of prior research and recent developments in this field, a systematic literature review was conducted and presented herein. The findings of the review demonstrate a lack of applied solutions in this topic, highlighting the need for a novel approach. Accordingly, a first framework for the envisioned multi-agent system, as conceptualized within the consortium research project, is presented in this work, serving as a basis for subsequent design phases. Abstract: Facilitated by AI technology, the phenomenon of cognitive automation extends the scope of deterministic business process automation (BPA) through the probabilistic automation of knowledge and service work. By transforming work systems through cognitive automation, organizations are provided with vast strategic opportunities to gain business value. However, research lacks a unified conceptual lens on cognitive automation, which hinders scientific progress. Thus, based on a Systematic Literature Review, we describe the fundamentals of cognitive automation and provide an integrated conceptualization. We provide an overview of the major BPA approaches such as workflow management, robotic process automation, and Machine Learning-facilitated BPA while emphasizing their complementary relationships. Furthermore, we show how the phenomenon of cognitive automation can be instantiated by Machine Learning-facilitated BPA systems that operate along the spectrum of lightweight and heavyweight IT implementations in larger IS ecosystems. Based on this, we describe the relevance and opportunities of cognitive automation in Information Systems research. Collapse

Abstract: Researchers of decision-making and human–computer interactions have been concerned with the issue of action slips and the development of supportive functionalities to reduce the occurrence of the slips. However, it remains unclear how to measure slips in a decision-making context and how motivational factors can help to reduce action slips. In this study, we formulate the construct of execution discrepancy to represent an individual’s deviation from his/her planned actions and propose a self-regulatory model to explain the antecedents and consequences of this construct. The model specifies that self-efficacy exerts a positive influence on the reduction of execution discrepancy that, in turn, leads to enhanced decision performance. An experiment was conducted based on the multi-attribute decision paradigm, and decision-makers’ eye movements were tracked to measure their execution discrepancy. The results support our hypothesis that self-efficacy serves as an important moti­ vational factor to modulate cognitive efforts needed to reduce execution discrepancy during strategy execution. In addition to its theoretical and methodological contribution to the construct of execution discrepancy, this study may have essential implications for the design of technological artifacts that can predict and prevent possible action slips. Abstract: QoS-based service composition enables the development of complex business applications. They are composed of distributed services characterized by QoS attributes representing non-functional characteristics, such as cost, execution time, and reliability. With the proliferation of services on the Internet, more candidates for each component service may be available with different QoS values. Hence, the ones satisfying QoS global constraints required for the application have to be selected. Automated negotiation is adopted to select component services in a dynamic market of services where provided QoS values may vary according to different market strategies. Nevertheless, when dealing with multiple QoS attributes, multiple service providers, and not shared information, it is difficult to guarantee the formal properties of the negotiation outcomes. In the present work, we propose a trade-off negotiation strategy that allows reaching a Pareto-optimal agreement, if it exists. The agreement consists of the QoS values of component services that are the ones selected to provide the complete application. The strategy exploits both the competition, that is due to multiple services providing the same functionality with different QoS values, and the cooperation among the providers of the different component services, that are necessary to meet the required end-to-end QoS constraints. Abstract: During the elicitation of vocational training processes in a consortium research project, it became clear that augmented reality (AR) is a useful learning environment. However, using AR glasses may isolate trainees in training workshops and reduce the level of collaboration. In this study, we address these potential adverse side effects with peer tutoring. More exactly, we want to initiate tutor-tutee pairs among trainees during AR-based vocational training processes. We derive design features for a multi-agent-based approach to build tutor-tutee pairs based on concepts from the literature, a technical perspective, and the consortium within a design science research approach. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to align AR with peer tutoring. With our first results, we provide a novel IT artifact in the realm of computer-supported collaborative learning in the information systems discipline. Future work can build upon these results even outside the scope of AR. Collapse

Abstract: The rapid expansion of innovative smart technologies is creating exciting new opportunities and causing disruptions in many different sectors, including manufacturing, finance, insurance, and healthcare. Given its broad impacts across a variety of areas, smart technologies currently represent one of the hottest topics in both academia and industry. This special issue seeks to identify the latest trends and research directions on this topic by presenting research on the development, evaluation, management, and organization of smart technologies in the age of smart services. We identify three trending categories of smart services: (1) the Internet of Things and wearable technologies, (2) the sharing economy and platforms, and (3) intelligent agents. These innovative technologies and their corresponding production possibilities are of great interest to both researchers and practitioners, particularly in terms of their impacts under different application scenarios. Abstract: Using an agency lens, this paper discusses a special human-computer relation, namely technological agency, in which users delegate social tasks to autonomous computing-artifacts (i.e., technological agents) who act on behalf of the users in the social sphere. In this respect, users treat the technological agents differently from traditional computer-enabled tools and assess them from a relational perspective. We argue that control and restrictiveness together shape users’ perceived relation with technological agents and influence their acceptance, in addition to their perceived utilitarian value of the technology. Abstract: The use and popularity of online auctions is growing all over the world. Bidding strategies are important because they are related to an auction's final price and ultimately its revenue. This study investigates the bidding stra­ tegies adopted by online bidders and the factors of the bidders, including bidding motivations, time availability, bidding experience, and risk aversion. We use the data from China to test the model and identify three bidding strategies in single-unit auctions: agent bidding, snipe bidding, and ratchet bidding. By running logistic re­ gression, we find that hedonic motivations, utilitarian motivations, time availability, bidding experience, and risk preference all influence online bidding strategies. We also conduct pairwise comparisons of bidding stra­ tegies based on these factors and a simulation experiment to compare the benefits brought by different bidding strategies. We conclude by discussing the implications for both research and practice. Collapse
