Abstract: Dismissing or disregarding security notifications (defensive avoidance) may lead to inactive use of anti-malware, compromising the effective protection of home computers. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the cognitive and behavioral mechanisms initiated by defensive avoidance in users. Motivated thus, we propose a moderated mediation model that depicts users’ cognitive and behavioral mechanisms initiated by defensive avoidance, as well as the moderation role of perceived vulnerability and user involvement. Our results show that perceived vulnerability and user involvement may moderate a biased cognitive mediation process between defensive avoidance and future behavioral intention. Collapse

Abstract: The software protection strategy of software developer and the inherent risk to end user in using pirated software are two major factors that affect a user's decision on whether to purchase or pirate a software product. This paper analyzes the optimal protection strategy for software developer in horizontally and vertically differentiated markets. We find that the implementation cost of software protection constitutes the primary factor for software developers to determine their software protection strategies. However, in a vertically differentiated market, the lower quality product should always adopt a non-protection strategy, regardless of the protection implementation cost. In other cases, protection would only be optimal if the protection implementation cost to the software developer is relatively small. These findings are consistent with anecdotal evidence. Collapse

Abstract: Policies of software protection greatly embody the development of a nation’s information industry and its respect for international regulations. However, the requirements of legislation and execution measures of these policies are varied with nations in view of its different practical national conditions. This paper studies the software protection policies in China and some experiences which may also applicable in other Asian countries. In the aspect of legislation, China adopts the principals of “pragmatism” and “gradualism”, which not only consider the national conditions but also actively come in line with international standards. As for the execution of these polices, China applies the “dual track system”, which refer to the joint law enforcements by judicial authority and administrative organs, while the simultaneous conduction of special administrative checking activities participated by multi-departmental bodies in individual district of the country functions as the effective and necessary supplement to the legal software protection in China.
