Abstract: Green information systems are often praised for their potential to foster sustainability in citizens’ daily lives and meet their needs. With this focus on citizens, districts that use smart technologies provide a litmus test, the results of which will indicate how to design smart green information systems that better meet the needs and desires of citizens. To date, however, guidelines on how to design such green information systems in urban areas or actively involve citizens in this process are few and far between. In recognition and remedy of this shortage, the study draws on the design science research paradigm to develop seven design principles for citizen-centric green information systems that can be used in sustainable smart districts. These principles are evaluated in 15 semi-structured interviews and a prototype of a mobile district app for a citizen-centric green information system is instantiated. By taking this citizen-centric perspective, the paper fosters the active involvement of humans in the design of sustainable urban environments. Collapse

Abstract: Worldwide, cities grapple with the expectation of putting the brakes on climate change. Before acting, smart districts often serve as a testing bed for strategies towards carbon-neutrality. If effective, scale-up agendas at city-level are formulated. Smart districts are touted for their sustainability lever, as their core rationale is encouraging residents to use ‘smart energy technologies’ which increase efficiency or integrate renewable energy sources. The primary focus of these districts is on technical implementations of available sustainability services instead of orienting their service-portfolio around citizens. The result is a mismatch of supply and demand of sustainability-inducing services. We take in a customer journey perspective when searching for literature and conducting qualitative interviews. Results reveal a framework for mapping service touchpoints into citizen journeys. The framework is meant to benefit district planners to tailor their service selection to meet their citizens’ needs and exploit the district’s sustainability potential at the citizen interface. Abstract: Consumer trends like local consumption, sharing of property, and environmental awareness change our habits and thereby our surroundings. These trends have their origin in our direct environment, in the districts of our city or community, where we live and socialize. Cities and districts are changing to “smart cities” and “smart districts” as a part of the ongoing digitalization. These changes offer the possibility to entrench the idea of sustainability and build a platform-based ecosystem for a sustainable smart district. This research aims to identify guidelines in form of preliminary design principles for sustainable smart districts. To achieve this, we conduct a structured literature review. On this basis, we derive and develop preliminary design principles with the help of semistructured interviews and a non-representative sample of the German population. The resulting nine preliminary design principles describe a first insight into the design of sustainable smart districts. Collapse

Abstract: Investment in information technology (IT) has been growing rapidly and one key reason for investing in IT is to improve information quality (IQ). Timeliness is an important IQ dimension that often needs to be improved for decision making. Especially in the era of big data, timeliness becomes more valued because of challenges of massive data size and high dimensionality. Many financial analyses require timely data to support time-critical decision making. In this paper, we develop a novel index method and effective query algorithms to reduce latency of querying high-dimensional data. The effectiveness of point, range, and similarity queries implemented using our methods is evaluated using a high-dimensional testbed conducted using real world financial data. Results show that our method outperforms existing methods in query speed of three types of queries frequently used in financial decision making. Collapse

Abstract: Data warehouses can be constructed using either a relational or a dimensional model. This research compares the diagrammatic representations of these two models. Semantic network theory suggests that, because of their structure, star-schema diagrams (SSDs) are more understandable than entity-relationship diagrams (ERDs). Through two experiments that test both the accuracy and pattern of users' recall, we find strong evidence that SSDs are easier to understand than ERDs. Our findings imply that the use of the dimensional model should help decision makers query the warehouse directly, thereby reducing costs and the need for intervention and support by IT professionals.
