Abstract: The fierce competition among brands on online marketplaces makes the optimization of offerings within this context a significant challenge. To address this challenge, we draw upon network theory and model the degree of competition through consumers' consideration sets. We use a large empirical dataset from one of the biggest online marketplaces to explore the dynamic relationship between network position and the degree of competition, and we depict the redistribution of market share of related offerings after adjusting their array. In doing so, we provide a theoretical reference on when and how brands should optimize their product offerings on online marketplaces. We further demonstrate that intra-brand cannibalization relations have a significantly greater impact on the degree of competition compared to inter-brand ones, while intra-brand cannibalization relations represent the main reason for fluctuations in the degree of competition. Hence, contrary to existing theoretical insights and practical intuitions, our findings demonstrate that brands should minimize the number and heterogeneity of their offerings within a market segment to increase their sales on online marketplaces. Abstract: Attention in the digital divide research agenda is shifting gradually from material access of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to actual use of ICTs. As internet usage increases worldwide and online activities concomitantly expand in range and sophistication, it becomes essential to examine patterns and disparities of such usage. This paper examines geographic patterns and disparities along with influences of demographic, economic, and social factors on internet use in U.S. states. Our conceptual model of internet use posits associations of 21 traditional (socio-economic) as well as non-traditional independent variables (social capital, societal openness, innovation, infrastructure, and affordability) with dependent indicators of e-communication, ecommerce, e-education, e-entertainment, e-health, and telework. Age, race/ethnicity, innovation, urban location, managerial and scientific occupations, and social capital are found to predominantly influence internet use spanning a range of online activities. Policy implications of these findings are discussed taking cognizance of geographic disparities in internet use among the fifty states. Collapse

Abstract: Information security issues are characterized with interdependence. Particularly, cyber criminals can easily cross national boundaries and exploit jurisdictional limitations between countries. Thus, whether cyber attacks are spatially autocorrelated is a strategic issue for government authorities and a tactic issue for insurance companies. Through an empirical study of cyber attacks across 62 countries during the period 2003-2007, we find little evidence on the spatial autocorrelation of cyber attacks at any week. However, after considering economic opportunity, IT infrastructure, international collaboration in enforcement and conventional crimes, we find strong evidence that cyber attacks were indeed spatially autocorrelated as they moved over time. The policy and managerial implication is that physical boundary should be an important factor in addressing strategic cyber attacks and their potential risks. Collapse
