Abstract: Although hotel location has been recognized as one of the important factors affecting hotel selection and guest satisfaction, relatively few studies have examined guest satisfaction with hotel location and its locational determinants at a macro level. This study aims to identify the locational determinants of hotel guest satisfaction through big data spatial analytics via a case study of 5,302 hotels in 151 cities in the U.S. Based on the framework of hotel location satisfaction, we classified all location-related factors into three categories: accessibility to points of interest, transport convenience, and surrounding environment. Our findings indicated that hotel property’s proximity to city area, landmark, park, shopping center, and highway as well as, attraction-driven tourism industry specialization, and hotel industry agglomeration were significant determinants. Furthermore, the impacts of these factors were spatially heterogeneous. Abstract: The rise of the sharing economy has disrupted traditional industries and has had many unforeseen societal impacts. This has sparked policy debates on whether and how the sharing economy should be regulated to promote the healthy growth of such markets. In this research, we examine the impact of platform self-regulations in the context of the home-sharing market. Using policy changes that reduce the number of Airbnb listings, we deploy a difference-in-difference approach to empirically test the impact of platform self-regulations on crime rate. Our results suggest that a reduction in Airbnb listings resulting from platform self-regulations leads to a reduction in crime. We further study the impact of these policy changes on different types of crime and find that these self-regulations lead to a reduction in incidents of crimes such as assault, robbery, and burglary but an increase in theft incidents. In addition, we use geographically weighted regression to investigate the heterogeneous effects of Airbnb occupancy on different types of neighborhoods, and we show that income, housing price, and population moderate the impact of the regulations. This research contributes to our understanding of the societal impacts of the sharing economy and the impact of platform self-regulation. Abstract: Ransomware is not only the bane of private businesses and publicly-traded companies, it has steadily targeted municipal governmental entities over the past couple of years. Such attacks can cripple a city's ability to provide services and support for its residents. Since these attacks are reported upon in the press, do an attacked community's citizens change their behavior in the wake of the attack?In this study, the security precautions being taken by residents within 20 miles of an attacked community were compared with Internet users living further away from the attacks. Using spatial analysis software like ArcGIS and GWR, we analyzed the data procured from an online survey of American Internet users and found that local learning complements users' prior victimization from cybercrime and their own selfinterest to influence their cautious behavior online. Abstract: Much research has made efforts to elaborate upon different dimensions to the digital divide, including informational and communications technology (ICT) access, ICT usage, and ICT outcomes. We assess the utility of such perspectives for studying digital inequality across prefectural cities in China. China is the world's largest ICT market in terms of the number of mobile devices in use, internet users, and broadband subscriptions, yet it has notable digital inequality within and between provinces, prefectural cities, and counties. In this study, we built a conceptual framework of digital divides for prefectural cities in China, examined spatial agglomeration using cluster analysis, and explored the leading correlates using a geographically-weighted regression (GWR) model. A large digital divide among the prefectural cities in China was revealed, with cities with a high administrative level having a relatively high digital development index(DDI) score. Prefectural cities with high DDI levels are mainly agglomerated in large metropolitan areas, such as Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei, the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and the West Coast Economic Zone of the Taiwan Straits. Prefectural cities with low DDI levels are concentrated in the rural-mountainous regions in southwest China and poverty-stricken areas in central and western China. This study also found that the leading determinants of the digital divide are urban residential income, the secondary education gross enrollment ratio, rural residential income, and the working age population ratio, which indicates that socio-economic problems, rather than institution and innovation aspects, have to be solved for improving ICT use and outcomes. Abstract: Accurate forecast of the demand for emergency medical services (EMS) can help in providing quick and efficient medical treatment and transportation of out-of-hospital patients. The aim of this research was to develop a forecasting model and investigate which factors are relevant to include in such model. The primary data used in this study was information about ambulance calls in three Swedish counties during the years 2013 and 2014. This information was processed, assigned to spatial grid zones and complemented with population and zone characteristics. A Zero-Inflated Poisson (ZIP) regression approach was then used to select significant factors and develop the forecasting model. The model was compared to the forecasting model that is currently incorporated in the EMS information system used by the ambulance dispatchers. The results show that the proposed model performs better than the existing one. Collapse

Abstract: Smartphones, iPads, wearable technologies, etc. have widespread application to healthcare. Prior research often assumed that having access to broadband technologies relates to equity in access to health-related technologies. While some studies suggest that the Internet has led to more sedentary lifestyles, which in turn leads to health-related issues, other studies have established the positive influence of broadband technologies on creating healthier lifestyles. So far, paradoxical effects have been explained by taking time into account but still downplayed geographical factors. This research takes a spatial econometric approach to tease apart the contradictory results. Using a broad dataset, spanning every county in the United States, our analysis reveals the net effect of Internet access over time and its influence on the physical and mental wellbeing of socially advantaged and disadvantaged individuals, while considering the existence of digital inequity and health inequity. Our findings have implications for organizations when designing technology artifacts. Collapse

Abstract: With an increasing number of threats to cybersecurity, research continues to focus on methods and behaviors by which individuals may better protect themselves. The availability of broadband infrastructure has been proposed to improve city and regional economic, educational, and health-related prospects, but its impact on facilitating security knowledge gathering has yet to be studied. This study assesses its influence using the data collected from 894 Internet users from across the United States with multiple analysis techniques supported by geographical information systems (GIS). The results indicate that broadband access, in addition to age and education level, is associated with higher levels of security knowledge. Moreover, geographical weighted regression analyses suggest that the significant variables vary in influence based on their locality. Collapse

Abstract: Urban areas consume up to 80 percent of the world's total energy production and are growing in size and complexity. At present, urban building energy consumption is largely considered solely in terms of individual building types, neglecting the effects of residents’ location-based activities that influence patterns in energy supply and demand. Here, we examine the spatial fluctuations of these effects. A spatial regression analysis of 3,613,360 positional records containing human mobility and energy consumption data across 983 areas in Greater London and 801 areas in the City of Chicago in residential and commercial buildings over the course of one month revealed spatial dependencies for both residential and commercial buildings’ energy consumption on human mobility. This dependency represents a strong connection with residential buildings’ energy consumption, with a spatial spillover effect. Future energy efficiency strategies should thus reflect the spatial dependencies, creating new ways for residential buildings to play a major role in energy related strategies. Collapse

Abstract: The presence of crime is one of the major challenges for societies all over the World, especially in metropolitan areas. As indicated by prior research, Information Systems can contribute greatly to cope with the complex factors that influence the emergence and location of delinquencies. In this work, we combine commonly used approaches of static environmental characteristics with Social Media. We expect that blending in such dynamic information of public behavior is a valuable addition to explain and predict criminal activity. Consequently, we employ Zero-Inflated Poisson Regressions and Geographically Weighted Regressions to examine how suitable Social Media data actually is for this purpose. Our results unveil geographic variation of explanatory power throughout a metropolitan area. Furthermore, we find that Social Media works exceptionally well for description of certain crime types and thus is also likely to enhance the accuracy of delinquency prediction. Collapse
