Abstract: This study examines the University of Oulu, Finland teaching staff's experiences of flipped teaching. Flipped teaching transposes the locations so that students watch recorded lectures or read and view other materials on their own time and participate in learning activities in the classroom. Flipped teaching facilitates communal learning, which enables students to support each other and benefit from interaction with the teacher. However, there is little research about flipped teaching from the perspective of teachers in higher education. In this study, most teachers reported positive experiences of the method, particularly regarding the interaction between teachers and students. Teachers require both pedagogical and technological support as well as a sufficient allocation of time to course design, particularly in the beginning stages of implementation. To ensure the successful implementation of flipped teaching, it is important to monitor the pre-class activities of students to ensure they are studying the materials provided. Collapse

Abstract: The fallout of the 2020 US presidential election has left a legacy of distrust in election systems in some subsets of the population. It is critical to the continued success of the US democratic system to analyze the mechanics of how the electorate forms a basis of trust that leads to their intention to participate in democracy. If enough people reject the process that supports democracy, this can result in instability and chaos in social systems. This study analyzes these constructs through the lens of the Socio-Technical Model (STM) (Bostrom and Heinen, 1977). This lens facilitated the creation of a new Election Security Model (ESM) and survey instrument. This survey instrument was validated in a pilot study. A subsequent large-scale study of the entire US population was then carried out. The findings showed the STM precursors were strongly correlated to trust. Surprisingly, trust was only weakly correlated to intention to use the system. Collapse

Abstract: This paper examines how people price the resale of durable goods in systematically biased ways. We show across four studies that the anchoring effect of durable goods’ prior sales prices on subsequent valuations is discontinuous at psychologically salient round number reference points (e.g., $10,000 increments) because these numbers create qualitative differences in how people perceive values below them versus values at/above them. Resellers set disproportionately larger subsequent prices when previous prices move from just below round number thresholds (e.g., $349,000) to those at or just above these thresholds (e.g., $351,000). The findings show that buyers who pay a price just below a round number, therefore, may sacrifice money because they receive disproportionately less when reselling the good. Market forces only partially attenuate this pricing bias, but valuator experience seems to play a moderating role. Archival data show that home buyers who previously paid just under a $10,000 reference point subsequently listed their homes for about 1.8% (over $3,700) less on average than did buyers selling comparable homes who previously paid at or above a round number threshold. This drop is observable controlling for home characteristics and the general relationship between previous and current prices. Three experimental studies looking at housing and used car markets replicate these findings, highlight the mechanism, and increase confidence in causality. Market mechanisms and the negotiation process attenuate discontinuities by about 30%, but lower initial listing prices persist to final sales prices. We find additional weak evidence suggesting that valuator experience may attenuate intergenerational pricing bias. Abstract: Financial risk in supply chain finance (SCF) is defined as the possibility that suppliers fall into liquidity crisis due to delayed payment. Predicting financial risk is important for supply chain stability. In this paper, a financial risk prediction model is developed using XGBoost and then evaluated by applying buyer transaction behavior data. We further construct single and hybrid models, respectively, and compare their performance using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), area under the ROC curve (AUC), and F1-Score. Last, feature importance and partial dependence plots (PDPs) are employed for model interpretation. The results show that XGBoost model can effectively predict potential financial risks, and shed lights on managers’ payment practice. This paper is one of the few studies that develop new models to examine financial risks in SCF empirically. Collapse

Abstract: Gamified learning management systems (LMS) can be effective in case game-design elements (GDE) address users' motivation to engage with the topic and lower barriers to learning. In the context of Security Education, Training, and Awareness (SETA) programs, gamification is stated to be a major success factor. However, there is scarce research about the relationship between GDE and learning outcomes such as information security awareness. The evaluation of GDE regarding the application context is important because inappropriate gamified approaches can lead to negative outcomes, e.g., anxiety or inappropriate behavior. Thus, we first derive narrative and team leaderboard (TL) as appropriate GDE for the context of SETA. Second, Spearman correlation analyses indicate positive significant relationships between the experience of narrative and team leaderboard with information security awareness. Therefore, we implicate integrating narrative and team leaderboard within an LMS in the context of SETA programs. Collapse

Abstract: Despite having many useful capabilities, more recently smart home assistants (SHAs) have also raised negative feelings and doubts which may cause resistance among potential users. However, current research has neither examined SHAs from the perspective of resistance nor its specific drivers (inhibitors). We address this gap and adopt a mixed-method research design with two studies that build on each other. Study 1 (N=10) elicits the belief structures underlying resistance to SHAs. Study 2 (N=276) builds on these findings and delves deeper into the understanding of one novel identified inhibitor, namely "perceived intrusion", by taking initial strides towards creating a measurement instrument. Our results contribute to the previously under-researched "dark side" of smart consumer IT by examining the phenomenon of resistance. This way, we hope to inspire future research to expand on our findings, as well as apply our measurement instrument in other smart product contexts. Collapse

Abstract: Different streams of research have led to contradictory conclusions about the venture performance implications of founders’ breadth of experience. Although extant empirical studies have explored the performance implications of founders’ breadth of experience at the start-up stage, we focus on the later stage of the initial public offering (IPO). We theorize that investors categorize venture founders based on two salient dimensions—their industry and functional background—and we relate this categorization to resource acquisition at IPO. To test our model, we use a hand-collected data set of 175 entrepreneurial IPOs in the Alternative Investment Market in London (2002–2013) and two randomized experiments. We theorize and find that compared with entrepreneurial ventures with a lead founder specializing in one industry or one function, investors generally devalue those with a category-spanning lead founder (a generalist). However, devaluation is less severe when a lead founder is a generalist in one dimension (e.g., industry) but a specialist in the other dimension (e.g., function). We also theorize and empirically test trust as a mechanism for the generalist penalty. Specifically, audience members (investors) have low trust in a generalist producer (founder) in contexts where the two parties consider entering into a partnership (equity investment at IPO), and so that generalist producer is devalued. Finally, we show that an external expert endorsement—in our case, from intensive venture capital affiliations—offsets the generalist penalty, especially when category spanning occurs in multiple category dimensions. Abstract: Within the context of green shipping, the concept of Just-In-Time (JIT) arrival has attracted much attention. Research achieves the JIT arrival for container ships by combining the berth allocation and quay crane assignment problem (BACAP) and the vessel speed optimization (VSO), both subject to the data exchange. Many prediction models of the research to date generally aim to reduce the uncertainty of the communicated estimated time of arrivals. There is a lack of research that simultaneously assesses the application effect of prediction models on both plans of the BACAP and the VSO. Therefore, this paper proposes a twostage model that integrates the prediction of the vessel arrival time with the optimization of the BACAP-VSO. The application in our specific case study shows that the random forest performs best in the first stage. The results are forwarded to the second stage and lead to a reduction of the service delay, fuel consumption cost, and vessel emissions. Collapse

Abstract: Recruitment is a critical activity for companies, and the research community has also shown significant interest in examining technology recruitment. Companies often communicate how they value their employees along with job requirements to potential candidates in a bid to attract them. However, there is an overall lack of understanding of how candidates react to such information and how their motivation toward the job changes with such online communication. Although there is substantial work that examines the decision-making process of managers who do technical hiring, to the best of our knowledge, there is a paucity of work that investigates the decision-making process of technical candidates. The broad research question studied is how including certain content in online communication about a technical job opportunity may (de)motivate heterogeneous candidates differently in applying for the job. We theorize the underlying process of how including certain content in online job communication may influence candidates’ propensity to apply and their minimum acceptable salary increase if they were to join the company. Additionally, we capture mediating variables that influence the effect of different online content on candidates’ propensity to apply and on candidates’ minimum acceptable salary increase. Abstract: In this paper, we study the role of extending character limits on firm responses on social media. By leveraging a natural experiment setting: the unexpected increase in post character limit on Twitter, we empirically investigate the impact on the linguistic styles of social media-based customer service responses. Using a Regression Discontinuity in Time Design and leveraging a panel dataset, our results suggest that extending character limits influences firm to change the linguistic styles in their responses which could influence consumers' perceptions. Our results show that extending post-character limits significantly reduces the readability ease of firm responses, on average, while increasing the concreteness and personal closeness scores of these responses, on average. We show that these changes were effective in influencing customer satisfaction. Collapse
