Abstract: Although Business Process Management (BPM) scholars frequently refer to the importance of aligning employee appraisals and rewards with processes, little is known about how the BPM discipline relates to these human resource aspects. We therefore conducted an exploratory case study in an internationally oriented organization with high BPM maturity to acquire a deeper understanding with the first-hand practices. We first elaborate on how the case organization includes behavioural and results-related components into its appraisals and performance management approach to improve employee alignment and process performance. Afterwards, we explain how and for which processrelated elements employees get rewarded and recognized. As academic implications, we build two preliminary frameworks that lay the foundation for further research. We also provide managers with best practices and lessons learned, serving as a practical guidance. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the growing interest in enterprise architecture management, researchers and practitioners lack a shared understanding of its applications in organizations. Building on findings from a literature review and eight case studies, we develop a taxonomy that categorizes applications of enterprise architecture management based on three classes of enterprise architecture scope. Organizations may adopt enterprise architecture management to help form, plan, and implement IT strategies; help plan and implement business strategies; or to further complement the business strategy-formation process. The findings challenge the traditional IT-centric view of enterprise architecture management application and suggest enterprise architecture management as an approach that could support the consistent design and evolution of an organization as a whole. Abstract: We provide a background discussion of group support systems (GSS) research into aiding strategic management processes. GSS support for strategic management has been primarily focused on qualitative analysis and the communication processes surrounding strategic planning. While fully developed in common decision-support systems, powerful simulation modeling and quantitative analytical tools have been difficult to integrate into GSS system configurations because they require increased cognitive load and expert modeling support, a central problem now addressed by collaboration engineering. A conceptual and functional bridge is needed to integrate the qualitative and quantitative approaches, reduce cognitive load, and provide modeling support that does not require experts. Acar's analytical causal mapping is introduced as a structured method for situational formulation and analysis of unstructured strategic problems. This form of causal mapping includes specific processes and analytical approaches offering cognitive modeling support for problem formulation. Its computational capabilities provide support for Systems Thinking approaches in a system easy to learn and use. Using the methodological template of the design science paradigm, we contribute a prototype system for the development and simulation of causal maps that uses RePast 2.0, a Java agent-based modeling (ABM) and simulation library. Abstract: Cognitive mapping has been used to support strategic planning in business. However, the process has seldom been utilized to support strategic planning in nonprofit public organizations, where many reporting lines are less clear. This paper describes how the cognitive mapping process was designed and implemented to help a large academic department identify and merge the individual goals of faculty members as a first step in creating a strategic plan. Each map was created using the Decision ExplorerTM software during individual interviews, as opposed to using paper and pencil. An action case approach was used to plan and evaluate individual mapping sessions. Eliciting individual cognitive maps led to greater engagement by faculty in the strategic planning process. Nearly all of the participating faculty members believed that the cognitive mapping process was helpful and insightful and the resulting map was accurate and complete. Collapse

Abstract: The success of an executive information system (EIS) depends upon many factors, including providing support for the strategic management process (SMP). The SMP is comprised of five phases: organizational objectives, environmental scanning, strategy formulation, strategy implementation, and strategic control. The study empirically investigated (1) the support of EISs for the phases of the SMP and (2) the relationship between the amount of support provided and EIS success. Data were collected from EIS professionals and executive users in 51 organizations. Descriptive statistics were calculated and correlation analysis was used to test the hypothesized relationships. It was found that the success of an EIS is related to its support for operational objectives and strategy implementation. The findings can be understood by considering the conditions that surround the development of an EIS and revisiting the relationship between management activities and information requirements. Abstract: The strategic application of information technology during the past two decades has brought about much sought-after competitive advantage in a variety of industries. In this book, although several examples for strategic information systems are provided covering a range of industries, many of the illustrations are from the airline industry. A separate chapter has been allocated to analysing airline industries. Further, a case study on the Boeing Company is included in the appendix. This case study illustrates a systematic approach to strategic analysis that combines all. the previously explained tools such as Porter's model, Wiseman's model and the timetested SWOT. Thus, the appendix could serve as a reference to those applying these strategic analysis models in business situations for the first time.The book has four major sections. The first three deal with the following three hierarchical perspectives: business environment, company (firm) and IS/IT function. These three thus focus on the identification phase of SIS and the last section deals with realisation issues. In the first chapter, the context and relevance of IS/IT in the overall business environment is outlined. Although no explicit definitions for system, boundary or interface are provided, the systems concepts are effectively used to arrive at a business driver model and to establish the strategic context of IS/IT in a business. The next four chapters are concerned with the business environment. Porter's value-chain model is the vehicle used to describe the business environment. Simple and effective illustrations are offered to map IS portfolios onto the value-chain framework.Further, the five-forces competitive model is clearly illustrated using Wal-Mart's business environment. Porter's two competitive strategies (differentiation and cost) are described as primary ones. However, the third strategy 'focus' is not mentioned. At this stage, the last three strategic thrusts (innovation, growth and alliance,) of Wiseman's model are brought in as supporting strategies. The fact that IS/IT, through its reach and range attributes, can facilitate innovation, growth and alliance is thus emphasised.The international business environment for the airline industry is analysed in Chapter 4 using Porter's value-chain and the five-forces competitive models. This, in a way, provides the background information for the case presentation on Boeing in the appendix. The power of inter-organisatiqnal systems (such as EDI) that integrate all units of a 'virtual' organisation in order to gain the competitive advantage is explained well in Chapter 5.Elsevier Science B.V.
