Abstract: Is digital innovation a big chance or a big threat for physical product-centric incumbents? Building on the unique characteristics of digital innovation, new market players can break the dominance of incumbents by providing digitally enabled products with distinct characteristics. Therefore, this paper empirically explores the dynamics within incumbents related to digital innovation management. Qualitative methods are used to systematically and inductively gain insights into how digital innovation is considered in the context of incumbents with physical product-driven business models. We use path dependence theory to explain the findings and support theoretical generalization of our results. The study contributes to the literature on digital innovation, how incumbents manage digital innovation under certain circumstances, and the related impacts on their business model. Further, we suggest three stages of digital innovation management in the context of path dependence. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we examine the effectiveness of various recommendation strategies in the mobile channel and their impact on consumers’ utility and demand levels for individual products. We find significant differences in effectiveness among various recommendation strategies. Interestingly, recommendation strategies that directly embed social proofs for the recommended alternatives outperform other recommendations. In addition, recommendation strategies combining social proofs with higher levels of induced awareness due to the prescribed temporal diversity have an even stronger effect on the mobile channel. We also examine the heterogeneity of the demand effect across items, users, and contextual settings, further verifying empirically the aforementioned information and persuasion mechanisms and generating rich insights. We also facilitate the estimation of causal effects in the presence of endogeneity using machine-learning methods. Specifically, we develop novel econometric instruments that capture product differentiation (isolation) based on deeplearning models of user-generated reviews. Our empirical findings extend the current knowledge regarding the heterogeneous impact of recommender systems, reconcile contradictory prior results in the related literature, and have significant business implications. Abstract: Cities bring about economic dynamism through positive economic externalities; however, the concentration of people in dense locations has its costs -epidemics, social unrest, pollution, and congestion are some of the ills of cities. As cities evolve, they experience stress, and fault lines appear; the ability to pulse a city and provide early warning of these fault lines can prove advantageous for policymakers in managing and planning for cities. This paper outlines a research program that developed a city scanning tool to measure cities and detect aberrations as they surface. We aggregated data from various industry partners, governmental agencies, and public online sources to develop the measurement metric and applied social science theories to analyze and interpret the results. The results of this study contribute to information system (IS) research by showcasing the role IS research in city planning and for societal good. Collapse

Abstract: As social structures and IT becomes intertwined, there is a need for new theoretical perspectives that advance understanding of this intertwinement and its implications for IT and social actors, institutions, and society. This research attempts to develop a theory that conceptualizes the role of technology in creating and manipulating stigma symbols and the subsequent consequences of the resultant symbolic interaction on the social actors, technology, and society. Understanding the changing nature of stigma due to technology is essential in understanding resulting societal manifestations and aids in the timely management of societal implications of the dark side of technology. Abstract: Bots are widespread in a variety of online platforms including online communities. Bots perform various useful tasks but little is known about how bots may alter how humansinteract with each other and exchange information. We draw on social exchange theory and symbolic interactionism to highlight the social aspect of human cognition and action and theorize how bots affect the online social environment and subsequently change how people interact with each other. We examine the effects of two fundamental forms of bots: reflexive and supervisory, and their differential impact on social exchange. With data from discussion communities on Reddit, we show that reflexive bots increase unidirectional exchange, whereas supervisory bots reduce centralization. Further, reflexive bots increase the depth of discourse, whereas supervisory bots reduce the breadth of discourse. We discuss the implications of these findings on theorizing about bots and the design of online communities. Collapse

Abstract: Achieving the anticipated business benefits of a social medium is important as organizations diligently invest in different social media platforms. While much previous research assumes that social media helps organizations to communicate with customers, less is known about whether customers embrace using social media to interact with organizations. It is important to understand the role of social media for business communication from the customers’ perspective, as this may significantly deviate from the organizations’ own communicative intentions. In this exploratory case study of the Moon Struck hotel in China, we investigate both how customers interpret the hotel’s use of WeChat official account for business communication and how customers respond to messages received from Moon Struck’s WeChat account. Adopting a symbolic interactionism perspective, we surprisingly find that WeChat personal accounts and Moon Struck’s official account offer radically different meanings to followers. Specifically, WeChat personal account symbolizes a sociality-oriented meaning (e.g., relationship and image building), while Moon Struck’s WeChat official account symbolizes information broadcasting-related meaning (e.g., selling, advertising, and branding). Both technological features and the distance of relationships among users contribute to the constructed symbolic meaning of technology, subsequently affecting users’ WeChat use patterns. The theoretical implications of this study are discussed and recommendations are made for future research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: ICT can have unintended impacts on the social behavior of children, but knowledge about the mechanisms by which they unfold is limited. To fill this gap, this paper examines the social behavioral impacts of ICT on young children (under seven-year-olds) who are in a critical developmental period for learning their basics of social behavior. This paper focuses on the ways in which ICT encourage them to modify their turn taking, the fundamental mechanism for conducting social behavior. Analyzing qualitative video data from real life child-computer interactions and parental interviews, these modifications are summarized as the hidden curriculum of ICT. Two dynamics unique to ICT interaction, the reprehension-free breaching of social expectations and the unlimited repetition of interactions, facilitate young children internalizing these modifications, with dual impacts on their social behavior. The negative impacts stem from the hidden curriculum of ICT desensitizing young children to the situational expectations of their social surroundings. The positives emerge from it promoting resilience sustaining social behavior in general. These results implicate that harnessing the hidden curriculum of ICT is important, especially when designing ICT for young children, because the conducts of social behavior internalized before the age of seven can persist for life. Abstract: Equity crowdfunding is increasing in popularity as an alternative to traditional financing for start-ups and growth companies to raise money for their business. This study discusses how equity crowdfunding is different from traditional financing, such as angel investors and venture capitalists. We argue this difference is brought further into focus when large numbers of crowd members invest small amounts, as opposed to fewer individuals making large investments. Building on existing research on Social Identity Theory, we look at why some crowdfunding campaigns are more likely to attract these contrasting types of investment (numerous small investments or fewer large investments). A model is presenting linking different characteristics of campaigns to total investment and average investment. This proposed model will be tested using public data gathered from Crowdcube, a leading UK-based equity crowdfunding platform. This study has significant implications for fundraisers who may wish to target different types of crowds according to the nature of their business, i.e. smaller numbers of passionate investors to provide informed input or larger numbers of casual investors to help create awareness and spread positive word of mouth. Abstract: Organizations predominantly rely on punishment and sanctioning to enforce compliance with information security policies among employees. However, employee’s reactance to these punitive approaches have recently been linked to several negative consequences that in the long run might negatively affect organizational performance. Against this backdrop, we aim to understand how non-punitive approaches present a viable alternative. We propose to study the unique revelatory case of Netflix Stethoscope, a new software tool that breaks with the tradition by assuming that users are generally willing to comply with information security policies if allowed the freedom to do so. Taking the employees perspective, and drawing from symbolic interactionism, we propose an exploratory research design targeted at uncovering what these non-punitive approaches mean to employees, how employees respond to nonpunitive approaches, and how culture affects employees’ meaning of non-punitive approaches.
