Abstract: This study draws on social exchange theory to investigate the relationship dynamics of the member–community dyad in virtual community settings. Using a longitudinal design and multiple measurement sources, the findings indicate that social and task communication styles have unique effects on members’ community commitment velocity, which in turn influences member gratitude and entitlement behaviors. A moderated path analysis demonstrates that the effects of social and task communication styles on community commitment velocity are both positively moderated by attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance. It also reveals that members’ level of popularity augments the influence of community commitment velocity on member entitlement behavior. Collapse

Abstract: Limited attention has been directed toward examining post-adoption stages of the information system life cycle. In particular, the final stages of this life cycle have been largely ignored despite the fact that most systems eventually reach the end of their useful life. This oversight is somewhat surprising given that end-of-life decisions can have significant implications for user effectiveness, the value extracted from IS investments, and organizational performance. Given this apparent gap, a multi-method empirical study was undertaken to improve our understanding of organizational level information system discontinuance. Research commenced with the development of a broad theoretical framework consistent with the technology-organization- environment (TOE) paradigm. The resulting framework was then used to guide a series of semi-structured interviews with organizational decision makers in an effort to inductively identify salient influences on the formation of IS discontinuance intentions. A set of research hypotheses were formulated based on the understanding obtained during these interviews and subsequently tested via a random survey of senior IS decision makers at U.S. and Canadian organizations. Data obtained from the survey responses was analyzed using partial least squares (PLS). Results of this analysis suggest that system capability shortcomings, limited availability of system support, and low levels of technical integration were key determinants of increased intentions to replace an existing system. Notably, investments in existing systems did not appear to significantly undermine organizational replacement intentions despite support for this possibility from both theory and our semi-structured interviews. Abstract: The relationship of user involvement to successful systems development has been the focus of much attention for information systems researchers for some time. Common understanding has been that extensive user involvement is not only important, but absolutely essential to system success. However, earlier studies trying to link user involvement to system success have shown mixed results. In this paper we review 28 empirical research studies that investigate the significance of user involvement. From our results we conclude that user involvement in the systems development process is indeed important to system success. Abstract: This study seeks to empirically investigate specific security characteristics of both open source software and proprietary software. Operating system software vulnerability data spanning several years are collected and analyzed to determine if significant differences exist in terms of inter-arrival times of published vulnerabilities and patch releases. Open source software is only marginally quicker in releasing patches for reported vulnerabilities. The arguments favoring the inherent security of open source software do not appear to hold up to scrutiny. These findings provide evidence to security managers to focus more on holistic software security management, irrespective of the proprietary-nature of the underlying software. Collapse

Abstract: User evaluations of information systems are frequently used as measures of MIS success, since it is extremely difficult to get objective measures of system performance. However, user evaluations have been appropriately criticized as lacking a clearly articulated theoretical basis for linking them to systems effectiveness, and almost no research has been found that explicitly tests the link between user evaluations of systems and objectively measured performance. In this paper, we focus on user evaluations of task-technology fit for mandatory use systems and develop theoretical arguments for the link to individual performance. This is then empirically tested in a controlled experiment with objective performance measures and carefully validated user evaluations. Statistically significant support for the link is found for one measure of performance but not for a second. These findings are consistent with others which found that users are not necessarily accurate reporters of key constructs related to use of IS, specifically that self reporting is a poor measure of actual utilization. The possibility that user evaluations have a stronger link to performance when users receive feedback on their performance is proposed. Implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Computations performed using end-user developed spreadsheets have resulted in serious errors and represent a major control risk to organizations. Literature suggests that factors contributing to spreadsheet errors include developer inexperience, poor design approaches, application types, problem complexity, time pressure, and presence or absence of review procedures. We explore the impact of using a structured design approach for spreadsheet development. We used two field experiments and found that subjects using the design approach showed a significant reduction in the number of ‘linking errors,’ i.e., mistakes in creating links between values that must connect one area of the spreadsheet to another or from one worksheet to another in a common workbook. Our results provide evidence that design approaches that explicitly identify potential error factors may improve end-user application reliability. We also observed that factors such as gender, application expertise, and workgroup configuration also influenced spreadsheet error rates. Collapse
