Abstract: Having realized that the traditional approach to teaching our IS course on Business and Systems Analysis was not engaging students enough, we decided we needed to redesign our learning environment. The goal was to develop a course that encourages student participation, allows them to practice the different techniques we introduce them to, and empowers students to take control of their learning. To achieve this, we blended modalities (online and inperson), pedagogies (constructivist and collaborative approaches), and technologies (student-centered technologies). This resulted in a redesign that included replacing the lecture with learning resources of a digestible size and an activity-based discussion, the workshop focusing on a project for authentic problems, sense-making via doing and reflection, hybrid participation in a steady and sustainable pace, and learning communities to enable more interaction. In this paper, we share our experience and lessons that we have learned through a journey toward a student-centered approach to learning. Collapse

Abstract: Theory is a crucial aspect of the information systems (IS) discipline. Authors draw from articles on how to develop theory and from the theories themselves to anchor knowledge contributions. Editors and reviewers expect to see novel theoretical insights in conjunction with empirical rigour and sophistication (cf. Hardin et al., 2022). The thinking of PhD students is shaped by discussions on the importance of theory through formal coursework and research seminars, as well as socialisation with peers, supervisors and senior scholars in the field. Journals often solicit submissions to special issues that champion particular kinds of theory or theories on specific topics, for example indigenous theory (Davison, 2021). Advice is given to authors in different ways that they can theorise (Hassan et al., 2022;Hong et al., 2014;Sandberg & Alvesson, 2021;Weick, 1989). The peer review process emphasises the importance of theory and tends to reject research articles that lack substantial theoretical contribution.However, assessing theoretical contributions is often a challenging task. IS scholars research a variety of topics with a pluralistic set of methods and epistemological approaches , which have several implications for our engagement with theory. Traditionally, reference disciplines have informed the diversity of topics IS scholars investigate. The IS field is at a point in its disciplinary evolution where we are seeing an even greater ambit of the application and use of IS, which fosters new topics being investigated from different epistemological and methodological viewpoints as well as new types of contributions . Consequently, IS theories take on different roles for different types of epistemologies and methods, and not understanding or respecting these differences can lead to unreasonable or unbalanced evaluation of papers.In addition to the diversity of theoretical approaches, we also perceive differences in the nature of engagement with theory. For example, papers that analyse large amounts of secondary data (textual and numerical, structured and unstructured) often focus on complex empirical techniques to analyse such datasets, often engaging minimally with theory (Miranda et al., 2022). We believe that sophisticated data analysis does not relieve IS researchers from the obligation to make a theoretical contribution. In this context, we believe, that we should take heed of the advice by Gurbaxani and Mendelson (1994) who warned, almost 30 years ago, about 'the risks of ignoring the guidance of theory' and recommended that IS researchers refrain from tinkering with 'atheoretical "black box" extrapolation techniques ' (p. 180).In an earlier editorial in this journal, Davison and Tarafdar (2018) noted how baselines for what is an acceptable contribution in a discipline shift over time. However, it is our view that a robust theoretical contribution should be (and is) a consistent expectation, even if the nature of the theoretical contribution varies. Journals play a key role in establishing baselines and in that spirit, recent and emerging intellectual trends in IS and other disciplines have implications for how we apply and develop theory in IS and point to an evolving and multi-focused role of theory in IS research. Therefore, in this editorial, we revisit and explicate why theory is important at the Information Systems Journal (ISJ) in these emerging scenarios. Abstract: This paper provides a literature analysis of digital dark nudging instances. Specifically, the literature analysis identified 14 relevant publications from various research disciplines. As a result, we systematically categorized the publications into seven instances of digital dark nudging (e.g., false expectations) within five application domains (e.g., e-commerce). Moreover, our results suggest that digital dark nudging leads the various adverse effects for individuals, such as monetary losses. We contribute to existing research by providing an overview of digital dark nudging research. Our findings indicate the need to investigate the long-term consequences of digital dark nudging. Furthermore, we pinpoint the need for clear differentiators between regular digital nudging and digital dark nudging, which is desperately needed to ensure to positive nature of digital nudging. Abstract: This paper explores the formation of a learning community facilitated by custom collaborative learning software. Drawing on research in group cognition, knowledge building discourse, and learning analytics, we conducted a mixed-methods field study involving an asynchronous online discussion consisting of 259 messages posted by 50 participants. The cluster analysis results provide evidence that the recommender system within the software can support the formation of a learning community with a small peripheral cluster. Regarding knowledge building discourse, we identified the distinct roles of central, intermediate (i.e., middle of three clusters), and peripheral clusters within a learning community. Furthermore, we found that message lexical complexity does not correlate to the stages of knowledge building. Overall, this study contributes to the group cognition theory to deepen our understanding about collaboration to construct new knowledge in online discussions. Moreover, we add a much-needed text mining perspective to the qualitative interaction analysis model. Collapse

Abstract: Digitization creates digital artefacts that represent physical objects but with augmented and novel characteristics. The ways in which we interact with these digital artefacts necessarily change, including the way we classify them. Classification is the fundamental human activity of grouping, naming, and describing objects to make sense of the world. Classification is therefore fundamental to research as it underpins theory. In this paper we introduce classification and the role of classification as background, followed by an analysis of the way in which classification is adopted within Information Systems (IS). The results of this analysis indicate that IS research adopted the classical classification approaches even though often not explicitly stated. We then analyze digital classification and results indicate that, even though digital classification is classification, existing classification approaches, and by extension, IS classification literature, does not support digital classification sufficiently despite the need due to contemporary and digitized socio-technical developments. Finally, classical classification is contrasted with digital classification requirements of digital classification regarding key characteristics, purpose, and approach. The comparison also includes suggestions that indicate how existing classification approaches could be extended. Collapse

Abstract: Research on artificial intelligence technology has not only increased rapidly over recent years, it is also no longer limited to the technical disciplines from which it originates. AI technologies are also at the center of social and sociotechnical studies including those conducted in information systems. Through a scoping review we explore how the research on different kinds of AI technologies has progressed over the past decade. Particularly, we explore whether the research on AI technologies has been informed by and informs our sociotechnical understanding of phenomena related to their design, development and implementation. For this purpose, we develop an analytical framework that differentiates sociotechnical perspectives, categorizes AI technologies into different kinds, and distinguishes research on AI technology design, development, and implementation. Abstract: To achieve organizational goals and remain competitive, evaluating, selecting, and managing IT projects and proposals to build a value-driven portfolio is a critical activity. IT project portfolio management (ITPPM) tools assist these portfolio-related activities, support strategic decision-makers, and help complete more IT projects successfully. Despite existing research on this topic, knowledge about the characteristics and design elements of ITPPM tools is still limited. We develop a taxonomy based on scientific literature and 60 real-word ITPPM tools with four perspectives, 20 dimensions, and 51 characteristics. Subsequently, we perform a cluster analysis and identify five ITPPM tool archetypes. Our results and findings contribute to the knowledge base and integrate scientific and practical knowledge to build the basis for further research on ITPPM tools. Further, we structure the ITPPM tool market, guide practitioners in selecting an appropriate ITPPM tool and support the development of new solutions or develop existing ones further. Collapse

Abstract: Digital payment technology allows financially excluded communities to access financial services by crossing infrastructural, regulatory, and economic boundaries. However, there are also cases where its presence might lead to exclusion. In addition to these diverse findings, it remains unclear why exclusion prevails in Mexico, where digital payment technology is highly developed for Latin America. Consequently, this study addresses how and why the Mexican context conditions digital payment inclusion. Based on a dynamic understanding of context and a field study, we operationalise Mexico's contextual conditioning through inequalities. Using observations, interviews and documents, the study's results reveal what we term contextual contradiction. Socio-economic infrastructure separation, evolutionary regression, and informal legislation are contextual contradictions which convey a dynamic conditioning leading to digital payment inclusion and exclusion. These findings contribute to debates on contextual explanation by addressing how context and phenomenon emerge together without bounding, stabilising, or situating context. Collapse

Abstract: The network information security regulation of information and communication technology (ICT) product supply chain is an important issue for governments globally. The whole life cycle of ICT supply chain is a complex process, comprising the design and development stage, outsourcing integration stage and service operation and maintenance stage. Each of these stages may be maliciously attacked, leading to network information security crisis. Therefore, a tripartite evolutionary game model comprising ICT product suppliers, demand customers (such as system integrators, operation and maintenance suppliers and service providers) and government regulatory authorities was constructed from the perspective of security threats and government regulation in the supply chain of ICT products based on bound rationality. The effects of each element on the tripartite strategy selection were evaluated by determining the evolutionary stability of upstream and downstream supply chains. The evolution path was simulated using Matlab2016a software and external variables were included for simulation analysis. The results showed that: (1) the costs of design development and production of high-quality ICT products directly affect the strategy choice of the producers, and determine the stable strategy time of the demanding customers, implying that excessive R&D costs negatively affect healthy development of the supply chain; (2) increase in incentives by the government within a reasonable range promotes the development of products with high security performance and ensures standardization of the implementation standards of information security acceptance of products by customers. However, the increase in incentives leads to a decrease in government supervision; (3) the initial probability of selection of product manufacturers plays an important role in the convergence rate of demand customers. The participating enterprises and government’s operational decision were explored using the tripartite evolutionary game of the ICT product supply chain to formulate recommendations to enhance the construction of information security. Abstract: In this paper, we focus on the early-stage diffusion of codependent IT innovations, which are a type of innovation in which the overall innovation consists of two complementary parts that are adopted by two different adopter communities but where both parts need to be jointly adopted by the two coadopter communities for successful diffusion of the overall innovation. Using innovation diffusion, organizing vision (OV), and institutional entrepreneurship theories as the key theoretical lenses, and an in-depth case study reconstructed using 20 years of discourse surrounding Walmart’s campaign in the early stage of diffusion of the RFID-in-retailing technology, we develop a fourphase process model for the early-stage diffusion of codependent IT innovations. We make three specific contributions to the IS discipline, specifically to the literature on IS innovation adoption and diffusion. First, we add the notion of coadopter relative advantage and posit that the organization in the coadopter community with a higher coadopter relative advantage that perceives the highest degree of coadopter relative advantage will emerge as an institutional entrepreneur (IE) and will influence the early-stage diffusion of the codependent IT innovation. Second, we add the notion of an internal-external influencer and posit that the IE may be an actor who is internal to the overall adoption phenomenon, which involves two different coadopter communities, but external to the coadopter community with a lower coadopter relative advantage that adopts the innovation component. Third, we divide the early-stage diffusion process into four phases—emergence, structuralization, evolution, and chasm—and identify the institutional entrepreneurship strategies used and the OV functions enacted by the IE during each phase. We propose that the IE for a codependent innovation will: (1) use the rationale development strategy and enact the interpretation OV function during the emergence phase, (2) use the resource mobilization strategy and enact the mobilization OV function during the structuralization phase, (3) use the relationship development strategy and enact the legitimation OV function during the evolution phase, and (4) use all the three institutional entrepreneurship strategies and enact all the three OV functions during the chasm phase.
