Abstract: Firms are increasingly adopting digital transformation as a strategic priority. However, the path to successful transformation remains uncertain for many organizations. This paper examines the establishment and evolution of competency centers in two case study organizations, historically used in enterprise systems, in addressing the complexity and challenges of digital transformation. The interactions within these competency centers are analyzed through assemblage theory to understand the emergent relations between heterogeneous parts (technology, people, and orga­ nization) and the dynamic processes of new configurations. The insights from this research show the critical role of the competency center in any enterprise system’s success and how it could continue playing a central role in future digital transformation initiatives. By providing a new lens to examine these issues, the assemblage theory provided a new theoretical perspective to the IS field and a new alternative empirical setting to the organizational literature. Abstract: As of late, the use of “digital” as a qualifier to established research concepts is increasing. However, we have yet to clearly establish what makes a “digital x” concept distinct from an “IT x” concept when “x” stands for well-established concepts such as strategy, infrastructure, innovation, or transformation, among others. In this paper, we review the need for, and merit of, labeling focal concepts in our field as “digital x” in contrast to using the dominant, incumbent label of “IT x.” We position the shift as a call to attend to new salient features that characterize contemporary settings of information technology use and its effects. Recognizing this need, we develop guidelines for future research by arguing what novel phenomena the label of “digital x” foregrounds and how insights gained through such foregrounding contribute to scholarship in ways that the term “IT x” does not. By doing so, this paper promotes clarity for the use of the digital x concepts and introduces explicit guidelines to delineate between the nascent stream of digital x research and established modes of IT x research. Abstract: Workarounds are goal-driven deviations from the standard operating procedures performed to overcome obstacles constraining day-to-day work. Despite starting as temporary fixes, they can become established across an organisation and trigger the innovation of processes and IT artefacts that can resolve misfits permanently. Although prior research has elicited antecedents and types of workarounds, it is not known how workarounds diffuse in an organisation and, thereby, innovating co-workers' activities, IT artefacts, and organisational structures. The results of our multiple two-year case study provide unique empirical insights into the diffusion of workarounds and how they can act as generative mechanisms for bottom-up process innovation. Abstract: The advancement of blockchain technologies has created new opportunities for businesses to deliver new innovative offerings while improving their existing efficiencies to stay relevant and maintain the required competitive advantage. As such, blockchain technology has emerged as an opportunity to radically revolutionize and transform the banking and financial industry. This paper aims to bridge the existing gap in the literature by identifying empirically relevant opportunities and anticipated risks of blockchain transformation in the sector. This study collated and empirically analyzed the conceptualized model using a qualitative case study approach, culminating with specific recommendations. The findings highlight how the realization of blockchain technology value, competitive advantage, innovation and impact is required to develop successful implementation strategies. Similarly, acknowledging associated risks from scalability, Interoperability, security, and regulatory perspectives is equally vital to developing the necessary measures to guide its successful implementation. Abstract: There is an exponential increase in information systems with few or no organizational rules initially embedded in them, such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Implementing these systems has been identified as an important challenge in practice and research. However, past information systems implementation research has mostly focused on systems with many organizational rules embedded in them. We present an initial case study of implementing IIoT using a regulation lens. This research demonstrates the embeddedness of rules within systems leads to different implementation processes and develops an initial process model of implementing systems with few rules embedded in them. These results show the usefulness of viewing implementation as regulation and suggest opportunities to improve implementation outcomes for IIoT. We plan on continuing this research by conducting a multiple case study. Collapse

Abstract: The adoption of Information Systems (IS) is among the critical topics for IS research and practice. However, despite rich insights across IS literature streams, many IS implementation projects still struggle with user adoption and realising benefits. This paper argues that a knowledge gap exists because research has paid little attention to the definition, manifestations, and effects of adoption management in mandatory environments. The article proposes definitions and systematically reviews findings related to adoption management at the cross-section of the adoption and benefits management literature. The findings show that adoption management manifests across the two literature streams as constructs, models, and methods. While some articles examine these manifestations in the analysis, many discuss adoption management as an afterthought in the implications for practice in discussion sections, and few articles explicitly label it adoption management. We discuss these and other gaps and provide avenues for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Digital transformation (DT) is widely acknowledged as an effective strategy to enhance revenue and business operations efficiency. However, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) often face significant challenges in implementing DT initiatives due to their inherent resource constraints, such as limited financial resources or a small workforce. Unfortunately, existing literature on how SMEs can effectively embrace digital transformation is limited; available frameworks are primarily tailored to large organizations with more resources. Hence, this study aims to develop a pragmatic DT framework specifically designed to aid SMEs in overcoming resource constraints that impede their successful DT transformation, while also leveraging their agile capability. The digital transformation framework was developed by combining prior literature with insights gathered through focus group discussions with industry experts from various industries. Our research contributes to the existing digital transformation literature by formulating a novel resource-considerate framework that caters to SMEs' unique characteristics, allowing them to implement DT initiatives without overburdening their limited resources. Abstract: This paper reports on a design science research (DSR) study that develops design principles for “green” – more environmentally sustainable – data mining processes. Grounded in the Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) and on a review of relevant literature on data mining methods, Green IT, and Green IS, the study identifies eight design principles that fall into the three categories of reuse, reduce, and support. The paper develops an evaluation strategy and provides empirical evidence for the principles’ utility. Abstract: This study introduces the IT Occupation Vision, a new conceptual and methodological framework, to examine structural changes in IT occupations. It also highlights the role of industry discourse in shaping those changes. The approach suggests that these occupations are shaped by a latent collective consensus that influences labor market categories. Adapting Relational Class Analysis (RCA), a type of Schematic Class Analysis, the study leverages textual signals from online job advertisements to scrutinize structural changes in IT roles and skill sets. This work bridges Organizing Vision and diffusion literature with the IT workforce, providing insights into the interaction between innovation, skills, and emerging technologies. Unlike the Organizing Vision theory, which is artifact-centric, the IT Occupational Vision focuses on the labor aspects associated with these technological innovations. Abstract: The adoption of new Information Technology (IT) innovations has led to increased uncertainty among employees, a greater demand for security measures, and more entry points for cyber-attacks, which all increase the risk of data breaches for firms. Despite the prevalence of discussions around this issue, there has been a lack of empirical research examining the data breach risk associated with IT innovations. To address this gap, we have developed arguments based on an organizational learning theoretical framework that explains how IT innovativeness can exacerbate data breach risk. Through our analysis of a sample of data breaches that occurred between 2013 and 2021, we have discovered that there is a positive association between firm IT innovativeness and the risk of data breaches. We also find that the effects of IT innovativeness can vary under certain conditions. For example, we find that the positive relationship between IT innovativeness and data breach risk is mitigated when managers possess IT expertise or when firms have established extensive board connections with cybersecurity managers. Moreover, we find that the relationship between IT innovativeness and data breach risk is amplified in complex environments but not in dynamic or munificent ones. This study takes the lead in advancing the theoretical understanding and empirical validation of security-related risks associated with IT innovations. Moreover, our findings serve as a timely reminder for research and practice to carefully consider the implications of introducing novel technologies into firms and the potential dark side consequences that may arise. Additionally, this study underscores the importance of understanding organizational learning in risk assessment and change management, as well as the critical role of contextual factors in moderating the unintended security-related consequences linked to IT innovations.
