Abstract: Grounded on an experimental study with 18 participants, we derive 15 design principles for no-code AR authoring tools in an organizational setting. The study consists of two distinct treatments that aim to augment lightweight processes with AR. The outcomes are two interactive tutorials utilizing AR instructions. Following the no-code approach, the participants were empowered to create relevant AR content using a reduced interface and no need for advanced configurations or coding. The study thus combines two research streams with the aim of better understanding mechanisms for AR use in a professional context. As prior work has shown, despite the potential benefits, the adoption of AR authoring tools is limited because ramping up AR to productive use is heavily dependent on consulting and custom software solutions. Our novel approach bears the potential to broaden application domains and empower professionals to apply AR. Collapse

Abstract: Online reviews affect consumer purchase decisions and become prevalent in different sectors. Platforms elicit useful reviews by allowing consumers to vote for helpfulness. The link between review features and review helpfulness hence has been a topic of broad interest in information systems (IS) and Internet commerce. Psy­ chological science studies show that expressed emotions in information – valence and arousal significantly in­ fluence receivers’ engagement and valuation. Unlike valence (negative or positive) that is widely-analyzed, emotional arousal is a less-studied attribute of online reviews. This study presents a careful account of the nonlinear link between emotional arousal and review helpfulness. Following a rigorous procedure of theorizing and testing nonlinear relationships (Haans et al. 2016), we articulate latent mechanisms leading to an inverted Ushaped association and how valence would moderate the nonlinear effect of review arousal. We analyze reviews on experience goods from Yelp.com and find firm support for our hypotheses. The findings are triangulated using reviews on search goods from Amazon.com. While the nonlinear effect of review arousal and interactions with review valence are robust to both types of goods, an alternative moderation path of review valence on the inverted U-shaped relationship is observed. Our empirical study contributes to the literature by shedding lights on the dynamics among arousal, valence, review helpfulness, and product types, which illustrates a prototypical example to IS/e-commerce scholars on rigorously conceptualizing and estimating U-shaped links as well as their moderations. Abstract: The goal of the current study was to explore the potential of neuroscience mining (NSM) for comprehending NeuroIS paradigms. NSM is an interdisciplinary field that combines neuroscience and business mining, which is the application of big data analytics, computational social science, and other areas to business problems. NSM makes it possible to apply predictive models to NeuroIS datasets, such as machine learning and deep learning, to find intricate patterns hidden by conventional regression-based analysis. First, we predicted 28 individual EEG power spectra separated brainwave data using a Random Forest (RF) model. Next, we used NSM to precisely predict how consumers would perceive a product online, depending on whether a light or dark user interface (UI) mode was used. The model was then used to extract more precise results that could not be obtained using more conventional linear-based analytical models using sensitivity analysis. The benefits of using NSM in NeuroIS research are as follows: (1) it can relieve the burden of the threehorned dilemma described by Runkel and McGrath; (2) it can enable more temporal data to be directly analyzed on the target variables; and (3) sensitivity analysis can be performed on a condition/individual basis, strengthening the rigor of findings by reducing sample bias that can be lost in grand averaging of data when analyzed with methods like GLM. Abstract: Building the Internet of Behaviors (IOB) obviously requires capturing human behavior. Sensor input from eye tracking has been widely used for profiling in market research, adaptive user interfaces, and other smart systems, but requires dedicated hardware. The wide spread of webcams in consumer devices like phones, tablets, notebooks, and smart TVs has fostered eye tracking with commodity cameras. In this paper, we present a systematic review across the IEEE and ACM databases -- complemented by snowballing and input from eye tracking experts at CHI 2021 -- to list and characterize publicly available webcam eye trackers that estimate the point-of-regard on devices with no additional hardware. Information from articles was supplemented by searching author websites and code repositories, and contacting authors. 16 eye trackers were found that can be used. The restrictions regarding license terms and technical performance are presented, enabling developers to choose an appropriate software for their IoB application. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the potential of augmented reality (AR) to support and guide complex industrial tasks, the technology is still not broadly applied. One possible reason for this is that the creation of AR content is highly complex and requires programming skills and deep spatial knowledge. AR authoring tools can help address this complexity by enabling non-developers to create self-sufficient AR content. Therefore, this paper proposes a theory-driven design for AR authoring tools that allows non-developers to create self-sufficient AR-based instructions to support complex tasks. Based on ten interviews with experts working with AR authoring tools and a following focus group with eight participants, we propose three design principles for future AR authoring tools in the engineering context. These design principles are instantiated in two prototypes of different richness and evaluated in an experiment with 23 students. Our study shows that the cognitive load is slightly increased when using the extensive AR authoring tool, but it also shows that significantly better results can be achieved with the extensive AR authoring tool. We contribute by providing design principles for AR authoring tools for creating AR-based instructions, which extend the existing AR authoring research in the industrial context. Collapse

Abstract: With urban problems intensifying, Smart City solutions are recognized by researchers and practitioners as one of the most promising solutions to make urban areas economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable. While many elements of Smart City solutions have been explored, existing works either treat Smart City solutions as technical black boxes or focus exclusively on Smart City solutions' technical or nontechnical characteristics. Therefore, to conceptualize the unique characteristics of Smart City solutions currently available, we developed a multi-layer taxonomy based on Smart City solution literature and a sample of 106 Smart City solutions. Moreover, we identified three clusters, each covering a typical combination of characteristics of Smart City solutions. We evaluated our findings by applying the Q-sort method. The results contribute to the descriptive knowledge of Smart City solutions as a first step for a theory for analyzing and enable researchers and practitioners to understand Smart City solutions more holistically. Abstract: Recommendation systems are widely used to promote product visibility and sales. However, past research suggests that they primarily benefit market superstars and therefore, can be detrimental to niche products. This is especially critical in superstar dominated markets such as the market of mobile apps. This study incorporates social network analysis and econometric models to empirically examine the impact of content-based filtering (CBF) recommendation systems on the distribution of demand in mobile app markets. The analysis results of two comprehensive panel datasets from App Store and Google Play suggest that CBF recommendations favor niche items and effectively boost the long tail of the market. Moreover, consistent with signaling theory, relative quality signals provided by recommendation systems can impact consumer decision making process, leading to a spillover of demand. Our findings provide important implications for developers and market operators to better promote their products in the highly competitive market of mobile apps. Collapse

Abstract: As platform owners interact with end users and complementors, their demand-side characteristics and performance affect the overall value creation of ecosystems. This research investigated how the emergence of popular complements on a mobile communication platform impacts the usage of other complementary products by the platform’s end users and how platform owners can benefit from such demand spillovers. We identified two different forms of demand spillovers (i.e., backward and forward) and conceptualized how each subsequently affects platform expansion. On the basis of individual user-level app usage data, we empirically demonstrated how the presence of a popular app alters the demand structure of a platform through changes in the usage of other apps operating within it. The findings reveal that popular app adoption by users increases the number of apps used and the duration of app usage, excluding the usage of popular apps, only within the platform offering a popular app. These results support the existence of positive spillovers from popular complement adoption on a platform. Such positive within-platform spillovers are derived from both backward spillovers onto existing apps adopted before popular app adoption and forward spillovers onto new apps to be adopted after the uptake of favored apps. These patterns suggest that positive spillovers of popular app adoption occur through both the increased retrieval of existing apps and reduced uncertainty about newly released apps. Furthermore, forward spillover is considerably stronger than backward spillover, implying that platform owners can reap benefits by coordinating the launch of new complements and the promotion of less-known counterparts to end users with the emergence of a popular app. These results shed light on how platform owners can manage their complements and create value beyond direct contributions from popular complements. Abstract: The amount of crowdfunding research that investigates funding success factors has been increasing. The existing research shows inconsistent evidence regarding how a prosocial project description affects funding success and largely ignores the issue of alignment/misalignment among different factors in affecting funding success. We suggest that funders’ prosocial motivation can be an important factor for this inconsistent evidence. We integrate the elaboration likelihood model and language expectancy theory and demonstrate distinct decision-making patterns from high and low prosocial motivation funders. Through three experiments, we provide evidence for alignment/misalignment effects among funders’ prosocial motivation, prosocial project descriptions, and platform types (donation-based vs. reward-based). While there are no differences for participants with high prosocial motivation across conditions, we find that participants with low prosocial motivation are more willing to contribute to a project that has alignment between the different factors, namely to a project that has a high prosocial description on a donation-based platform, or to a project that has a low prosocial description on a reward-based platform. This research sheds light on the crowdfunding and prosocial motivation literature. Collapse
