Meso-Foundations of Interorganizational Relationships: How Team Power Structures Shape Partner Novelty

Abstract: Novel external partnerships are valuable but risky, and scholars have examined the organization- and individual-level determinants of firms’ decisions to pursue these new relationships. Yet, in organizations performing complex and knowledge-intensive work, decisions about interorganizational relationships are often made within teams. We characterize these decisions as a two-stage process in which a team member proposes a partner and other team members respond, supporting or challenging the proposal. As novel partnerships are risky, and power is a key determinant of risk-taking propensity, we argue that the power of team members—both those who initiate proposals and those who respond—will shape the likelihood that the team will pursue a novel external partnership. Using personnel data from project teams in an automated equipment design and build firm, we find that the effect of power on the likelihood of novel partner adoption depends on both the type of power and the role of the person in the decision process. Novel partner selection is more likely when those initiating proposals hold formal structural power but less likely when initiators hold informal power. Both the formal and informal power of the initiator’s teammates attenuate the effect of initiator power, such that the more power one’s teammates have, the less one’s own power will affect the likelihood of novel external partner selection. Finally, we provide evidence that these effects on likelihood of novel partner adoption are as materially consequential for project outcomes as other strategic choices available to project teams. These findings have implications for the intraorganizational determinants of interorganizational networks. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems development (ISD) success hinges upon the creation and maintenance of a supportive climate. Yet how team members’ psychological climate (individual perceptions of the organizational context) is developed remains unanswered. This study contributes to understanding how relationships with co-workers are antecedents to a supportive psychological climate that in turn impact ISD project performance. Hypotheses are developed and tested using social network data from 172 dyads between employees and project managers of an information technology (IT) organization in the Southeastern United States. Results from PLS show that as hypothesized friendship and trust have a direct positive relationship and expertise has a direct negative effect with psychological climate. Further, trust positively moderates the relationship between expertise and psychological climate. Finally, psychological climate has a direct positive relationship with project performance controlling for gender, job tenure, age and race. Surprisingly, advice ties and advice ties moderated by trust did not relate to psychological climate as hypothesized. Implications of the findings are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper we investigate how effective conflict management in conflict asymmetry situations impacts the quality of cross-functional management teams’ performance. During a 5-day business simulation, we explore the consequences of the relational conflicts and conflict asymmetry experienced by team members. We use two different measures of conflict asymmetry: the traditional group conflict asymmetry measurement of Jehn (Adm Sci Q 40:256–282, 1995) and a social networks method. We find that when some team members evoke more conflict than others, this affects the evolution of team dynamics (and ultimately the performance of the team) even more than high levels of conflict altogether; however, group emotional awareness can mitigate this negative effect and improve the team performance through the appropriate use of conflict management strategies. Since group emotional awareness can be fostered and trained within teams, this is of practical value to improve the performance of cross-functional management teams. Collapse

Abstract: In secure software has resulted of millions of dollars of company’s revenue as complex organizational systems are often software intensive. Researchers are still interested in the impact of the people involved, the process used and the project characteristics. This study looks at the security awareness and maturity level of those involved in the development process coupled with the management of the process to identify factors that lead to enhanced secure software development. Following a survey of prior literature, it is hypothesized that software development team members’ security awareness and maturity affect the design of software in a distributed context. Due to the nature of work of distributed team members, the relationship between team security awareness and maturity coordination on secure software design are also posited to be impacted by control types and coordination mechanisms. Abstract: Although studies targeting CIO’s leadership characteristics are numerous, studies examining CIOs’ leadership styles are scarce. Today’s CIOs are often members of the firm’s C-level executive team with a wide range of leadership capabilities and characteristics that are not much different from those of the CEOs. What, then, are the characteristics and leadership styles for those CIOs? This literature review study attempts to answer those two questions by examining prior research on these topics. First, we examine prior literature identifying all studied characteristics and then, propose four categories to group them into meaningful sets. Second, we identify what leadership styles are used by researchers. And while the general leadership field has been evolving over the past twenty years shifting its focus and introducing new leadership styles, CIOs' leadership research is still entrapped in the old school of thinking. Consequently, we intend to stimulate new thinking about studying CIOs’ characteristics and styles. Collapse

Abstract: We examine the role of sentry and guard activities in outsourced software development. Sentry activities are designed to regulate the inflow of external information to the project teams and guard activities are designed to manage the outflow of teams’ information and resources to external sources. The use of sentry and guard activities has been examined in teams in other contexts such as new product development, but their role and relationship to performance in software development teams is not well understood. We hypothesize and test curvilinear relationships between these activities and knowledge integration in vendor development teams. We also examine how these effects vary under conditions of greater project uncertainty. We tested the hypotheses using data from 139 vendor development teams drawn from sixteen Indian software companies. Results highlight complex curvilinear associations among sentry and guard activities, and knowledge integration, which are further impacted by the level of uncertainty that the project team faces. We recommend that carefully calibrating sentry and guard processes will help vendor development teams enhance project outcomes. Collapse

In particular, organizations increasingly seek solutions to their business problems using online crowdsourcing contests that are open the public. Motivated by this new phenomenon, this research investigates how the distribution of social connections and skill levels within a virtual team impacts its performance in the context of online crowdsourcing contests. Specifically, we examine the impacts of member centrality, skill levels and the alignment of these two measures within a virtual team on team performances in competitive environments. Our analysis suggests that centrality and skill levels of members of different roles are related to team performance differently. We further show that the alignment of member centrality and skill level has a negative impact on team performances, and this negative impact get stronger when the competition intensity is high. Our findings have strategic implications to the design of virtual work teams. Collapse

In particular, organizations increasingly seek solutions to their business problems using online crowdsourcing contests that are open to the public. In these contests, self-organized virtual teams compete for monetary reward. Motivated by this new phenomenon, this research investigates how the social network structure of a virtual team impacts its performance in the context of online crowdsourcing contests. Specifically, we empirically assess the impact of the alignment of member centrality within the virtual team with their skill levels on team performances. Abstract: This study proposes and tests a model that explains the mediating mechanism through which the transactive memory system (TMS) of a team impacts on team performance under varying levels of team geographic dispersion. The model proposes that the relationship between TMS and team performance is mediated by the extent of knowledge integration among team members. The model further proposes that the degree of team geographic dispersion moderates the effect of TMS and knowledge integration on team performance. Survey data from 54 project teams in a major telecommunication company were collected to test the model. The study develops a deeper understanding of the mechanism through which TMS affects team performance and highlights the need to explicitly theorize team geographic dispersion, an important characteristic of contemporary project teams, in TMS research.
