Abstract: Recent years have seen rapid growth in IS scholarship addressing the efficacy and utility of blockchain technology in trade-processing and financial services. Numerous IS scholars encourage applied research into the ostensible synergies between the nascent technology and its various use cases. Yet the vast majority of published research approaches the issue from a purely contemplative or theoretical perspective. Addressing this gap in the IS literature, we apply the design science research methodology in the construction a software artefact for the abstract representation of physical assets in the form of blockchain tokens, a process colloquially referred to as tokenization. We present the final iteration of the artefact, evaluating our results against the requirements collected through the design search process. This informs a rigorous evaluation of the conceptual limitations of blockchain-based software artefacts. We conclude that, provided the aforementioned requirements are adequately observed within the design search process, blockchain technology can indeed improve post-trade processing. Collapse

Abstract: IT providers have heralded software-as-a-service (SaaS) as an excellent complement to on-premises software addressing the shortcomings of previous on-demand software solutions such as application service provision (ASP). However, although some practitioners and academics emphasize the opportunities that SaaS offers companies, others already predict its decline due to the considerable risk involved in its deployment. Ours is the first study to analyze the opportunities and risks associated with adopting SaaS as perceived by IT executives at adopter and non-adopter firms. We first developed a research model grounded in an opportunity-risk framework, which is theoretically embedded in the theory of reasoned action. Subsequently, we analyzed the data collected through a survey of 349 IT executives at German companies. Our findings suggest that in respect to both SaaS adopters and non-adopters, security threats are the dominant factor influencing IT executives' overall risk perceptions. On the other hand, cost advantages are the strongest driver affecting IT executives' perceptions of SaaS opportunities. Furthermore, we find significant differences between adopters' and non-adopters' perceptions of specific SaaS risks and opportunities, such as performance and economic risks as well as quality improvements, and access to specialized resources. Our study provides relevant findings to improve companies' assessment of SaaS offerings. It also offers SaaS providers insights into the factors that should be prioritized or avoided when offering SaaS services to companies at different stages of their technology adoption lifecycle. Abstract: Researchers have identified network effects as one of the major drivers for the adoption and diffusion of household technologies. However, the mechanisms and social contexts through which network effects induce technology adoption are unclear. In this paper, we investigate the adoption of household computers using the dataset from the 1989–2003 Computer and Internet Supplement to the Current Population Surveys (CPS). We argue that social influence and learning play a dominant role in inducing the adoption of home computers, and workplaces and schools are important channels through which network effects take place. We find that recent adopters have a stronger impact than distant adopters on future computer adoptions. When the adoption rate is low, channels play a more important role, but their effects diminish as the adoption rate grows. We also find that diffusion channels are more effective for first-time adoption than for repeat purchases. Overall, our study provides important theoretical, policy, and managerial implications. Abstract: Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is said to become an important cornerstone of the Internet of Services. However, while some market research and IT provider firms fervently support this point-of-view, others already conjure up the failure of this on-demand sourcing option due to considerable risks associated with SaaS. Although there is a substantial body of research at the intersection of traditional and on-demand IT outsourcing and risk management, existing research is virtually silent on analyzing the risks of SaaS. This study thus seeks to deepen the understanding of a comprehensive set of risk factors affecting the adoption of SaaS and discriminates between SaaS adopters and non-adopters. Grounded in perceived risk theory, we developed a research model that was analyzed with survey data of 379 firms in Germany. Our analysis revealed that security risk was the dominant factor influencing companies’ overall risk perceptions on SaaS-based sourcing. Moreover, we found significant differences between adopters’ and non-adopters’ perceptions of performance and financial risks. Overall, this study provides relevant findings that potential and actual SaaS clients may use to better assess SaaS-based offerings. For SaaS providers, our study gives important factors to emphasize when offering SaaS services to companies in different stages of the technology adoption lifecycle. Collapse

Abstract: When technology adoption takes on fad-like characteristics it becomes critical to understand consumer behaviors due to the large swings in demand and expectations for the technology. Companies can see revenues skyrocket, only to fall just as fast without understanding the dynamics of the consumer adoption decision process. A model for fad-like technology adoption is described using the technology adoption lifecycle from Rogers adding the theory of information cascades and adopter thresholds. Adopter behavior in each stage of the lifecycle is described as individualistic or holistic utilizing the theories of Watkins and Durkheim. Adoption of the Apple iPhoneTM is shown to illustrate the application of the model and the individual and holistic social actions of fad-like technology adoption. Collapse

Abstract: The Technology Adoption Life Cycle (TALC) has been used in studying the sustainability of hyper-growth, high-tech markets. Recent work in this area has identified the presence of “chasm”in this lifecycle. Since most technology products ultimately derive their value from software, this study explores the effect of chasm on the sustainability issues in software industry. This paper presents an empirical study of selected ERP companies during the period 1989–2004. We investigate whether these companies experience the stages of TALC and the chasm effect as seen in other high-tech markets. Using financial data, we focus on R&D / Marketing expenses and sales revenue of companies and apply DEA to measure efficiency and investigate the sources and level of inefficiencies in these companies. The results demonstrate that efficient companies are not just investing more in R&D and Marketing, but are in fact managing the inputs better than the inefficient companies. Collapse

Abstract: This research examines the gap between the level and nature of intranet system benefits commonly reported by the practitioner press and those benefits cited in academic research. Results are analyzed for two different timeframes: the early period when intranets were emerging, and the more later mature stage. Conclusions are drawn concerning how claims of intranet benefits in the practitioner press have evolved, shifting from hard quantifiable benefits based on return on investment to soft benefits such as knowledge sharing across organizational boundaries. During the same period, intranet benefits identified by academic studies are found to show little change, remaining consistently focused on faster access to information as the key benefit. The disparity between promised and demonstrated intranet benefits is discussed. Results indicate that practitioner literature from the early era, around 1996, emphasized excessive ROIs, as large as 1000%. More current practitioner literature stresses intangible benefits such as communications, competitiveness, and content management. This difference in practitioner press reports of intranet benefits over time contrasts dramatically with the consistency of academic studies in identifying improvements in data access as the most significant intranet benefit. Conclusions are drawn concerning the predilection of practitioners prematurely to tout the benefits of technological improvements, and the potential value of academic research in providing objective evaluation for IT executives charged with distinguishing product fads and hyperbole from enduring and substantive improvements.
