Does Investor Gender Matter for the Success of Female Entrepreneurs? Gender Homophily and the Stigma of Incompetence in Entrepreneurial Finance

Abstract: Female support of other women has been put forth as a remedy to the gender gap across many domains. Yet the potential costs associated with gender homophily are not well understood. We propose that homophily aggravates negative gender bias in evaluation. Focusing on the context of entrepreneurship, we theorize that future investors will discount a female entrepreneur’s competence as the key factor in an early-stage investment decision, when the investment comes from a female investor. Consequently, female-backed female entrepreneurs may struggle to raise additional funds from new investors. In a field study of venture-backed startups, we find that firms with female founders who received funding from female rather than male VCs are two times less likely to raise additional financing. We find no equivalent investor gender effect for male-founded firms. In an experimental study, we find that pitches by female-backed female entrepreneurs receive lower evaluations compared with all other pitches, and that this is driven by perceptions of entrepreneur competence. Our findings suggest that well-intentioned calls for women to invest in women not only place an undue burden on female investors, but may also undermine the long-term success of female entrepreneurs. Abstract: Our knowledge on differences in business model characteristics of thriving and failing Multi-Sided Platforms in competitive B2B networks (B2B-MSP) and potential influences of increasing governmental involvement remains fragmented. This study develops a taxonomy to classify special B2B-MSP with varying governmental influence in the supply chain and transportation context, viz. Port and Cargo Community Systems (CS). Based on the classification of 44 international CS, we identify four archetypes using cluster analysis. The taxonomy provides practitioners with a differentiated view on the configuration options of CS business models including the involvement of governmental institutions, while the presented archetypes contribute an aggregated view of CS business models. The statistical analysis of our results provides initial explanatory approaches on CS business model dimension interdependencies, thereby laying the basis for a deeper understanding of sectoral and geographic differences of B2B-MSP and their diffusion dynamics as well as facilitating a higher contextualization of future research. Abstract: The financial system is currently being transformed by digitization and sustainability. However, existing research on the topic of sustainable digital finance, which bridges both areas, is still rare and a more comprehensive understanding of the domain is a missing component in existing research. Therefore, this paper develops a taxonomy based on a comprehensive literature analysis to structure this emerging field more precisely. The taxonomy includes a strategic, an organizational, a systems and a sustainability benefits perspective. The application of the taxonomy to 126 startups reveals that their solutions primarily focus on applications in the energy, financial services and government sector and their major focus is only on five of the seventeen SDGs, which shows a clear preference for climate, energy, infrastructure, cities, and partnerships as the primary goals. Surprisingly, the startups focus merely on operational efficiency optimization like improved processes rather than disruptive innovations in product or customer-related areas. Collapse

Abstract: Maintaining a private life in our digital world is gradually becoming harder. With Internet services having ever increasing access to personal data, it is crucial to raise user awareness about what privacy guarantees they offer. Regulations have recently been enacted such as the European General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR). Yet, online service providers still have terms and privacy policies to which users tend to agree without ever viewing or reading them. By using digital nudges, this paper explores how small changes in the choice architecture can be designed to increase the informed consent and privacy awareness of users. The results from a double-blind online experiment (n = 183) show that phrasing the agreement differently and providing a highlights alternative to the existing quick-join choice architecture can significantly increase the number of users who view and read the terms and privacy policy. However, these digital nudges seem to not increase the users' recollection of what they have agreed to. The experimental results are complemented by a field test using one of the proposed designs in the IKEA Place app (n = 81'431). Collapse

Abstract: We study the geographical patterns of scientific collaboration from a large sample of research papers and letters written by two authors that appeared in the magazine Nature over two sub-periods, before and after the popularization of Internet use. We report three results: First, the distance distribution of coauthors is fat-tailed, in agreement with other studies that find a gravitational law in collaboration networks. Second, in the later period the distance distribution dominates the range of commute-distance and beyond (>50km), which renders the city the atomic unit for statistical testing. Last, strong geographical clustering remains a major generative factor in this network. Assuming the universality of this law, we estimate the gravitational constant from the pull between scientists in the network. We find that this constant has decreased two-fold over the last three decades while the other coefficients remain stable. This may indicate that the gravitational constant absorbs changes in the environment that render distances easier to cross, namely a "lighter world" Collapse

Abstract: Reputation threats on social media in the aftermath of a data breach is a critical concern to enterprises. We argue that any effort to minimize reputation threats will require an orderly assessment of how reputation threat manifests on social media. Drawing on crisis communication and social media literature, we analyze Twitter postings related to the 2014 Home Depot data breach. We identify a taxonomy of data breach frames and sub-frames and the related reputation threats as manifested by data breach responsibility-attributions and negative emotional responses. Results indicate that reputation threats vary for intentional, accidental, and victim data breach frames. Based on crisis stage theory, we also analyze the dynamics of evolving reputation threats as data breach situation unfolds on social media. Results suggest that the data breach frames and associated reputation threats vary across the crisis stages. Further, intentional and accidental frames increase subsequent responsibility-attributions and negative emotions. Tweets with responsibility-attributions further increase the subsequent generation of reputation-threatening tweets. Negative emotions, particularly anger and disgust, also increase subsequent reputation threats. Our study has implications for enterprise reputation management and word-of-mouth literature. The results yield valuable insights that can guide enterprise strategy for social media reputation management and post data breach intervention. Collapse

Abstract: The contemporary literature has emphasized the importance of the interactions between government and citizens to improve the quality of life of citizens. However, most of these studies have assessed this role at the national level leaving out the crucial role of local governments. The main goal of this study is to compare the level of development of e-government services at the municipal level in Chile using an evalue index designed for this research. This research analyzed 190 municipality websites in Chile. An evalue index was calculated, and a regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between the level of e-government services provided and other municipal variables. Results indicate that the level of egovernment services is distributed unevenly among municipalities in Chile and population size, household income and internet connectivity of a municipality are directly related to the level of egovernment services development. Abstract: Passwords are the most widely used method of authentication on the Internet, but users find compliance with password guidelines difficult, and we know little about the long-term effects of attempts to improve compliance. In this paper, we extend the work of fear appeals use in the IS security domain to investigate their longer-term effects. We conducted a longitudinal experimental study to examine fear appeals’ long- and short-term effects. Using a model based on protection motivation theory (Rogers, 1983), we found that fear of threat, perceived password effectiveness, and password self-efficacy predicted compliance. We also found that neither perceived vulnerability to a security attack nor perceived severity of an attack influenced compliance. Providing persuasive communication improved compliance with password guidelines and resulted in significantly stronger passwords, but the effects on compliance intentions were only short term. This study extends our understanding of the factors that influence compliance with password guidelines and how we can modify them to improve compliance. We raise interesting questions about the role of fear in different IS security contexts. We also highlight the need for more research on the long-term impact of persuasive communication. Collapse

Abstract: Exergaming, a form of digital gaming that combines physical exercise and video games, has become increasingly common in recent years. Exergaming has also become a subject of growing interest among academic researchers. They can be used to motivate people towards more active and a healthier lifestyle. This study examines the adoption and habits of playing exergames, focusing especially on whether and how exercise and gaming backgrounds are associated with the usage of these types of games. The study is based on analyzing an online survey sample of 1,091 respondents through contingency tables, the Pearson’s χ2 tests of independence, and the Cramér’s V coefficients. The results reveal interesting findings concerning the adoption and habits of playing exergames. Digital gaming frequency is found better in explaining these compared to physical activity background, with some interesting differences. These results can also be used to draw implications for the design and marketing of exergames. Collapse

Abstract: Extant research is equivocal about the organizational performance effects of customer relationship management (CRM) technology use, with some studies reporting positive effects and other studies reporting no effects at all. The present research effort posits that these mixed findings may potentially be explained by two factors: (1) CRM technology use may have different effects on different customers, and (2) different CRM tools may have different performance consequences. This study investigates this possibility by building on relationship marketing and management theory to propose and test a model of the customer- and firm-level consequences of the organizational use of CRM interaction support and customer prioritization tools. The results of data analysis of 295 customer firms nested within 10 provider firms reveal that firm use of CRM interaction support tools is positively related to customers' relationship perceptions, regardless of customer account size. In contrast, the data indicate that use of CRM prioritization tools appears to have positive effects on a firm's larger customers and negative effects on smaller customers. The results also suggest that when considered at an aggregate level, customer perceptions of the exchange relationship are predictive of organizational performance and that the association between these two variables is significant for larger customer accounts but insignificant for smaller accounts. Overall, the study's results help explain some of the inconsistent findings reported in the literature regarding the performance implications of CRM technology use and suggest that use of the technology may serve to enhance organizational performance, at least over the short term.
