Abstract: Contact-tracing applications are only effective in countering pandemics when two conditions are fulfilled: A) they are widely adopted, and B) users voluntarily disclose their infection to warn others. While much research has investigated how contact-tracing applications should be designed and promoted to motivate app-adoption, little is known about how to increase voluntary infection disclosures. To increase the voluntary infection disclosure among app-users, our joint research project with the core development team of a contact-tracing application relied on the theory of message framing to investigate how to nudge users toward infection disclosure in contact-tracing applications. Based on a mixed method research design consisting of 15 workshops with the core development team of the contact-tracing application and a conjoint study among 139 users of a European contact-tracing application we show that message framing can be a useful approach to increase the voluntary infection disclosure in contact-tracing applications. Abstract: This study uses a design science research methodology to develop and evaluate the Pi-Mind agent, an information technology artefact that acts as a responsible, resilient, ubiquitous cognitive clone – or a digital copy – and an autonomous representative of a human decision-maker. Pi-Mind agents can learn the decision-making capabilities of their “donors” in a specific training environment based on generative adversarial networks. A trained clone can be used by a decision-maker as an additional resource for one’s own cognitive enhancement, as an autonomous representative, or even as a replacement when appropriate. The assumption regarding this approach is as follows: when someone was forced to leave a critical process because of, for example, sickness, or wanted to take care of several simultaneously running processes, then they would be more confident knowing that their autonomous digital representatives were as capable and predictable as their exact personal “copy”. The Pi-Mind agent was evaluated in a Ukrainian higher education environment and a military logistics laboratory. In this paper, in addition to describing the artefact, its expected utility, and its design process within different contexts, we include the corresponding proof of concept, proof of value, and proof of use. Abstract: Drawing on theorising on digital technologies as external enablers of entrepreneurial activities and an interactionist perspective on corporate entrepreneurship, this article examines the relationship between digital technology support and employee intrapreneurial behaviour. We propose that management support for innovation as an organisational characteristic and intrapreneurial self-efficacy as an individual characteristic moderate this relationship. Findings from a metric conjoint experiment with 1360 decisions nested within 85 employees showed that support by social media, support by collaborative technologies, and support by intelligent decision support systems were significant predictors of employee intrapreneurial behaviour. However, the relative impact of support by these digital technologies varied with different levels of management support for innovation and intrapreneurial self-efficacy. Collapse

Abstract: Rising amounts of electronic waste are an increasingly pressing global issue. Thus, eco-design principles, which aim to extend information technologies' (IT) lifecycle and facilitate reuse in a closed-loop fashion, are gaining attention by policy-makers and practitioners. Hitherto, eco-design principles have not been entirely recognized by Green IT literature. Hence, our empirical understanding on consumers' perceived value of IT designed for longevity and reuse is limited. To gain insights into consumer preferences regarding eco-design principles, we analyse the perceived value of IT designed for waste minimization and resource efficiency. Further, we empirically test hypothesized relationships between preferences and psychological motivations using a sample of 270 consumers. Our results indicate that consumers are willing to pay more for consumer IT that entails eco-design principles. Attributes related to pre-use (sourcing, manufacturing) and use (hardware modularity, software updates) are valued more than post-use characteristics (disposal, reuse). We interpret these results in light of consumers' underlying motivational characteristics that affect individual decision-making. The study's findings advance our understanding of critical consumer preferences and factors that influence decision-making for more sustainable consumer IT. Collapse

Abstract: Technological advancements have enabled the emergence of increasingly intelligent and autonomous support of private decision-making. Automated financial investing by robo-advisors is exemplary of this development. For the user to benefit from digital investment management, robo-advisors must reflect user preferences. Important robo-advisor characteristics are their level of automation, the degree of control they allow customers, and their transparency. However, suitable configurations along the characteristics have not yet been determined. Specifically, users value high financial performance while desiring control over investments, partly caused by cognitive bias. In case of algorithmic superiority to human decisions in this context, a performance-control dilemma occurs. In this study, we conduct a choice-based conjoint analysis to derive user preferences of robo-advisor configurations and investigate the potential of transparency to alleviate the performance-control dilemma. Results suggest that users prefer hybrid automation and high levels of control and transparency, supporting the dilemma's occurrence. Transparency is confirmed to be a potential mitigator of the dilemma only for some attribute levels tested. These findings enhance our understanding of user preferences in highly autonomous decision support in the presence of cognitive bias. We provide implications for theory and practice by identifying the performance-control dilemma and suggesting transparency as a mitigator. Collapse

Abstract: Freemium" revenue models enable media companies to attract potential customers with restricted, but freely available, product versions while charging for premium versions. Whereas some companies have established viable businesses with this model, others, specifically news content providers, still struggle to convert free users into paying customers. The value discrepancy between the free and the premium versions is a major driver of users' conversion decisions. Nevertheless, IS research lacks in understanding, how freemium design influences the value discrepancy when users are familiar with the product. News content providers create value discrepancy by means of digital paywalls, configuring quantity restriction, choice restriction, advertising, and price. In this study, we conduct a discrete choice experiment, in which consumers face decisions when comparing their status quo (a free version) with a subscription offer (a premium version). Our results reveal that decreasing the free version's value and increasing the premium version's value has a positive effect on conversion intentions. While restricting the quantity is only effective if more content is available, restricting the choice relatively increases in effectiveness if less content is available. Additionally, we find indications that combining a price of zero with a less severe quantity restriction could trigger an irrational zero-price effect. Collapse

Abstract: Building on the ability-motivation-opportunity framework, this paper examines the relationship of organizations’ digital capital with employee corporate entrepreneurship decisions and the moderating roles of employee personal initiative and employee digital fluency. Findings from a conjoint experiment with 106 employees show that digital process and knowledge capital positively relate to employee corporate entrepreneurship decisions. In addition, a configuration where high digital process and knowledge capital come together with high levels of personal initiative and digital fluency is particularly supportive for employee corporate entrepreneurial behavior. Digital capital represents an opportunity-enhancing resource that is best leveraged when employees have both the motivation (i.e., personal initiative) and ability (i.e., digital fluency) to use it. Abstract: Many companies invest considerable resources in developing Business Analytics (BA) capabilities to improve their performance. BA can affect performance in many different ways. This paper analyses how BA capabilities affect firms’ agility through information quality and innovative capability. Furthermore, it studies the moderating role of environmental turbulence, both technological and in the market. The proposed model was tested using statistical data from 154 firms with two respondents (CEO and CIO) from each firm. The data were analysed using Partial Least Squares (PLS)/Structured Equation Modelling (SEM). Our results indicate that BA capabilities strongly impact a firm’s agility through an increase in information quality and innovative capability. We also discuss that both market and technological turbulence moderate the influence of firms' agility on firms' performance. Collapse

Abstract: The internationalization of software firms has been widely researched topic over the last two decades. However, the most of the studies have treated software firms as a homogeneous group, ignoring the fact that software firms actually differ greatly in terms of having either a product or a service orientation. Based on earlier literature, we hypothesized that software product firms would show a tendency to internationalize earlier and at a smaller size than software service firms, and that product firms would show a greater tendency to target countries that are both geographically and culturally distant. In fact, we found no support for most of our hypotheses, with relatively strong and statistically significant results emerging in the opposite direction. Abstract: Personal learning environments (PLEs) are disrupting contemporary education, offering opportunities for enhanced use of technology for learning. To maximize these opportunities it is imperative to understand how learners’ technological fluency and self-regulated learning skills are interrelated within PLEs. This paper presents the quantitative findings of an ongoing longitudinal mixed methods study to identify and describe these relationships between digital literacy and self-regulated learning skills. Structural equation modeling is used to test competing models using online survey data from 181 participants in a two-wave panel design. The results support the acceptance of a non-recursive model with significant positive reciprocal relationships between digital literacy component constructs and the self-regulated learning construct. We contribute via empirical evidence, to clarifying the direction and extent to which digital literacy and self-regulated learning skills of undergraduates influence each other. The paper concludes with a discussion of implications for theory and practice together with future research opportunities. Collapse
