Abstract: We propose a research agenda on digital innovation units (DIUs) that refines the current -mainly descriptive-body of knowledge. Receiving great attention in practice, DIUs are dedicated organizational units that support and partly drive digital transformation in incumbent firms by leveraging new structures and practices that differ from those existing in the organization, aiming to promote various aspects of digital innovation. Utilizing DIU knowledge from a theoretical literature review, the resulting research agenda assists in structuring the field by synthesizing and connecting the partly isolated knowledge chunks. We illustrate a coherent picture of theorizing DIUs using Whetten's building blocks of theory. Researchers can draw on our findings to understand the emerging phenomenon of DIUs and use them as a stencil for future DIU research. It simultaneously may guide practitioners to understand the nature of DIUs and their role in a firm's digital transformation journey. Collapse

Abstract: Digital servitization is of increasing concern for manufacturers to exploit the potentials of digitalization with new service offerings. In this context, substantial changes within a firm´s capabilities, processes and mindset of employees need to be considered. To better understand such changes, we carve out behavioral logics of manufacturers undergoing digital servitization. An alternate template research design is used to discover the entrepreneurial logics of effectuation, causation, and bricolage. For this purpose, we conducted 13 semi-structured interviews with experts from the German manufacturing industry. Our results show that firms approaching digital servitization via hybrid decision logics. Causation can be found within all organizations. Effectuation is integrated to various degrees. Against it, the bricolage-logic is barely present. In total, the results provide new insights for digital servitization and for organizational ambidexterity. Collapse

Abstract: With intense competition and relatively inexperienced founders, the crowdfunding market has reported high failure rates. However, the IT components of the crowdfunding market provide entrepreneurs with more opportunities for experimentation and trial, leading to a new phenomenon of post-failure relaunches. Research into campaign relaunch success is urgently needed but under-researched. By combining failure learning theory with a collective perspective, the present study examines how investors' cocreation, in terms of advocacy and feedback, can benefit crowdfunding relaunch success directly or indirectly (by motivating founders' failure learning). The study tested the proposed mediation model with 1,902 failure-relaunched Kickstarter campaigns, with most hypotheses supported. Furthermore, the study explores the role of the time interval between crowdfunding relaunch and prior release. The findings indicate that an increased time interval enhances the positive effects of founders' learning efforts on relaunch success while attenuating the potential positive effects of investors' advocacy, implying a tradeoff in timing decisions. Abstract: In this paper, we focus on the early-stage diffusion of codependent IT innovations, which are a type of innovation in which the overall innovation consists of two complementary parts that are adopted by two different adopter communities but where both parts need to be jointly adopted by the two coadopter communities for successful diffusion of the overall innovation. Using innovation diffusion, organizing vision (OV), and institutional entrepreneurship theories as the key theoretical lenses, and an in-depth case study reconstructed using 20 years of discourse surrounding Walmart’s campaign in the early stage of diffusion of the RFID-in-retailing technology, we develop a fourphase process model for the early-stage diffusion of codependent IT innovations. We make three specific contributions to the IS discipline, specifically to the literature on IS innovation adoption and diffusion. First, we add the notion of coadopter relative advantage and posit that the organization in the coadopter community with a higher coadopter relative advantage that perceives the highest degree of coadopter relative advantage will emerge as an institutional entrepreneur (IE) and will influence the early-stage diffusion of the codependent IT innovation. Second, we add the notion of an internal-external influencer and posit that the IE may be an actor who is internal to the overall adoption phenomenon, which involves two different coadopter communities, but external to the coadopter community with a lower coadopter relative advantage that adopts the innovation component. Third, we divide the early-stage diffusion process into four phases—emergence, structuralization, evolution, and chasm—and identify the institutional entrepreneurship strategies used and the OV functions enacted by the IE during each phase. We propose that the IE for a codependent innovation will: (1) use the rationale development strategy and enact the interpretation OV function during the emergence phase, (2) use the resource mobilization strategy and enact the mobilization OV function during the structuralization phase, (3) use the relationship development strategy and enact the legitimation OV function during the evolution phase, and (4) use all the three institutional entrepreneurship strategies and enact all the three OV functions during the chasm phase. Abstract: Though digital technology adoption among SMEs is widely studied, a manifestation of digitalization – virtual integration, particularly its strategic benefits for SMEs – remains largely understudied. Virtual integration con­ nects and coalesces the interfaces of digitalization in SMEs. Though the need for externally oriented digitalization in SMEs is widely desired and espoused, virtual integration and the ensuing effect on Dynamic Strategic Planning (DSP) could be key factors in realizing higher performance. Using the information theory lens and knowledgebased view and a two-study empirical setup based on data from manufacturing and services firms, we draw on the Competence–Capability–Performance (CCP) framework. Specifically, we test a model of digitalization circuitry operational through the mediating effects of virtual integration and dynamic strategic planning (DSP). The ensuing interweaving effects of digitalization from virtual integration are manifest in DSP through fluid partnering, business continuity planning, and market acuity. We find that digitalization, manifested in the form of virtual integration, cascades through DSP to improve financial performance. Collapse

Abstract: This study adopts a signaling theory perspective to examine whether and how crowdfunding (relative to angel financing) influences subsequent venture capital (VC) investments in startups. We used a bivariate probit model with propensity score matching to address the potential endogeneity of the initial funding choice. Subsequently, we found that crowdfunded startups have a lower chance of receiving VC funding than angel-financed startups and that the effect is more negative for startups located outside of startup cluster cities. We show that corporate VCs, unlike independent VCs comprising the majority of VCs, favor crowdfunded startups. Our study contributes to the literature on crowdfunding, startup finance, and the transformative effects of IT-enabled platforms. This study further discusses the practical implications of crowdfunding in startup finance ecosystems. Collapse

Abstract: In recent years, higher education institutions (HEI) have expanded their involvement in diverse transfer activities (TA), extending beyond traditional teaching and research roles. These TA are often heterogeneous and informal, which makes measuring their full scope and effects challenging. In this article, we propose a new and straightforward to implement approach for mastering this task. In a first step, we theoretically derive three different dimensions of transfer, namely the transfer of knowledge, technology and personnel. For each of these categories, we develop an artificial intelligence (AI) optimized keyword list. Finally, we use these lists and apply web mining techniques and natural language processing (NLP) to measure TA from German HEI. To this end, we analyze a total of 299,229 texts from 376 German HEI websites. Our study shows that our proposed approach represents an effective and valuable tool for measuring TA from HEI and provides a foundation for further research. Collapse

Abstract: Female support of other women has been put forth as a remedy to the gender gap across many domains. Yet the potential costs associated with gender homophily are not well understood. We propose that homophily aggravates negative gender bias in evaluation. Focusing on the context of entrepreneurship, we theorize that future investors will discount a female entrepreneur’s competence as the key factor in an early-stage investment decision, when the investment comes from a female investor. Consequently, female-backed female entrepreneurs may struggle to raise additional funds from new investors. In a field study of venture-backed startups, we find that firms with female founders who received funding from female rather than male VCs are two times less likely to raise additional financing. We find no equivalent investor gender effect for male-founded firms. In an experimental study, we find that pitches by female-backed female entrepreneurs receive lower evaluations compared with all other pitches, and that this is driven by perceptions of entrepreneur competence. Our findings suggest that well-intentioned calls for women to invest in women not only place an undue burden on female investors, but may also undermine the long-term success of female entrepreneurs.
