Abstract: Within the domain of Information Systems, assumptions around sociotechnical change cohesively build on establishing a stable and balanced relationship between the social and technical structures. When these structures become too rigid, revolutionary moments that punctuate the status quo are required for the structures to accommodate to a new situation. Approaching sociotechnical change with “punctuation of equilibrium” is becoming increasingly ineffective. In line with rising instability and rapid digital development, we argue that new sociotechnical change approaches are needed. In this paper we investigate how individual knowledge workers respond to the increasingly complex challenges they face when orchestrating social and technical structures to support efficient and creative knowledge work. We suggest a new perspective that covers an unstable equilibrium emerging from the interplay between individuals and their usage of “the collection of rigid and flexible workplace technologies”. Our study is based on data from interviews made with 40 knowledge professionals over a period of three years, inquiring into individual experiences with sociotechnical change. Our study reveals contradictory patterns of both technological-individualisation and -socialisation. A universal generative mechanism emerges when these patterns complement each other and generates continuous change that seems to diminish inertia from rigid structures while also intensifying agile responses. Abstract: In recent years, organizations in the private sector have started making part of their data available to the public free of charge. The phenomenon, known as open data and so far mostly embraced by governmental institutions, creates an opportunity for companies to increase corporate transparency and foster outside innovation. However, it contradicts the notion of maximizing profits by directly monetizing data assets and requires the dedication of internal resources to what are currently unknown benefits. We conduct a multiple case study to develop an understanding of how organizations approach the implementation of an open data strategy. Our qualitative explorative study analyses the results through the lens of organizational change theory. We find that open data requires substantial organizational change and derive six propositions for designing this transition. This study therefore contributes to initial theory building and lays the foundation for future empirical research. Moreover, it provides insights for organizations on how open data initiatives are implemented and offers guidance to practitioners that aim to get open data strategies under way. Collapse

Abstract: This study investigates how three different IT departments responded to IT consumerization. Using dynamic capabilities theory, we classified IT departments’ responses as sensing, seizing or transforming. This research shows how IT consumerization impacts each IT department’s deep structure and how the resulting changes can move beyond the scope of consumer tools and impact IT department operations. We demonstrate how consumerization, while creating struggles, creates shared governance, power redistribution and innovation for the IT workforce. Collapse

Abstract: Radical shifts in large information technology programmes or digital infrastructures are unusual, but they do occur, usually as a consequence of problems or misalignment. What we know less about is the role of discourse in these shifts. Our interest in this article is to investigate the role of discourse when digitalisation programmes encounter problems. Building on Foucault’s theory of discourse, our research question is: what is the role of discourse in the transformation of digital infrastructures? Our research approach is a critical realist case study, discussing three cases from eHealth innovation. We use Foucault’s archaeological methodology to identify the emerging discursive formations when a programme encounters difficulties. This enables us to analyse the causal relationship between discursive formations and other mechanisms in the infrastructure. We offer two contributions: first, we outline a framework to understand the role of discursive formations in digital transformation; second, we propose a set of configurations to explain how contextual factors and causal mechanisms contingently lead to the transformation of a digital infrastructure. Abstract: An extensive penetration of digital technologies and a myriad of connected devices, people, and organizations have led to a world more interdependent than ever. Powerful companies such as Amazon, Facebook, Apple etc. exemplify the potential to harness widespread innovation from countless actors, including consumers and developers, via the power of digital technologies, emphasizing the notion of ‘Ecosystems’. Although the importance of these structures is obvious to the success of digital ventures, less is actively known about the development of established ecosystems in the era of digital innovation. Accordingly, we investigate the automotive ecosystem’s evolution by conducting a longitudinal study, spanning three time periods from 2002 to 2017. We illustrate the ecosystem’s development by visualizing the constituting companies and relations and assess key measures of network structure. By contrasting our empirical results with knowledge on biological ecosystem change, we derive implications for an IS specific ecosystem change theory. Collapse

Abstract: Researchers, policy makers, and watchdog organizations have touted web disclosure – the disclosure of financial and performance information on an organization’s own public website – as an innovative solution to the precipitous decline in public confidence and trust in the nonprofit sector. Unfortunately, many nonprofits have been slow to adopt adequate levels of web disclosure. In order to address the problem of differential implementation of web disclosure, we identified four factors from previous research that influence information systems (IS) adoption. The four factors include awareness, perceived benefits, organizational readiness, and perceived pressure. In order to investigate the influence of these factors on web disclosure adoption, we surveyed a sample of 3,323 U.S. nonprofit organizations. Our results generated from 176 responses revealed that attitude toward disclosure, compatibility of disclosure with current practices, and financial readiness were all positively related to web disclosure adoption. We conclude with implications for research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: a b s t r a c tA business school declares its strategy as becoming a leading European institution. As main vehicle for achieving recognition is the implementation of a top-down strategy naming five academic fields as key -(a) finance, (b) economics, (c) marketing, (d) law, accounting, and auditing, and (e) organizational behavior (OB). Top management allocates resources for research, academic activities, and positions to these five strategically chosen areas. Academic areas that are not strategically named must generate their own income through educational programs and research grants. Can OB serve as the platform to ensure the survival of IS/KMS? In our analysis, we found no other business school formulating a strategy along these lines; dominating strategic themes are internationalization, research excellence, and student environment. No academic field is singled out as strategic. We argue that selecting a few academic areas as a strategy is dysfunctional. We also found that OB is not very actively employed in research, be it positioning, theory, research model, analysis, or discussion. Hence, we do not find that OB offers any theorizing help to IS/KMS -this in contrast to innovation and change theories, for which we propose an framework as a means of defining IS/KMS research projects. Abstract: This study presents a conceptual model to investigate the e-health readiness required by healthcare organization and the impact of such readiness in enhancing e-health transformation success. A scale to measure e-health readiness was developed and validated; then it was used to collect the large-scale survey data. The partial least squares (PLS) method was used to empirically test the conceptual model and hypotheses through the large-scale survey collected. The empirical results support the proposed model. The results provide a means to understand what factors determine the e-health transformation success and can potentially be used in advance of e-health transformation for contemporary hospitals to check its e-health readiness level and prepare the needed changes for e-health implementations to ensure better e-health transformation. Abstract: As more organizations undertake business process reengineering (BPR), issues in implementing BPR projects become a major concern. This field research seeks empirically to explore the problems of implementing reengineering projects and how the severity of these problems relates to BPR project success. Based on past theories and research related to the implementation of organizational change as well as field experience of reengineering experts, a comprehensive list of sixty-four BPR implementation problems was identified. The severity of each problem was then rated by those who have participated in reengineering in 105 organizations. Analysis of the results clearly demonstrates the central importance of change management in BPR implementation success. Resolutions of problems in other areas such as technological competence and project planning were also determined to be necessary, but not sufficient, conditions for reengineering success. Further, problems that are more directly related to the conduct of a project such as process delineation, project management, and tactical planning were perceived as less difficult, yet highly related to project success. This situation was also true for human resource problems such as training personnel for the redesigned process. These findings suggest that reengineering project implementation is complex, involving many factors. To succeed, it is essential that change be managed and that balanced attention be paid to all identified factors, including those that are more contextual (e.g., management support and technological competence) as well as factors that pertain directly to the conduct of the project (e.g., project management and process delineation). As one of the first pieces of empirical evidence based on a field study, this research emphasizes the importance of addressing BPR implementation within the broader context of organizational change in a complex sociotechnical environment.
