Resilience of the U.S. Gig Economy during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Insights from Location Big Data

Abstract: The COVID19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented unemployment crisis. But new op portunities emerged in gig economy to support a flexible form of labor participation. In our research, we study the response of gig economy to various pandemic mitigation poli cies. Leveraging novel, populationscale, and highfrequency location data, we present our evidence on the impact of COVID19 policies on gig economy. We find that (1) gig jobs remain resilient throughout the crisis, suffering fewer job losses than the traditional labor market; (2) the gig sector absorbed the nongig labor losses during the crisis; (3) the gig economy boosts resilience of the disadvantaged, curbing job losses more in Black neighborhoods; and (4) gig workers adapted their work hours to suit the populations' changing circadian rhythms. Our findings highlight the resilience of gig economy in the face of an unprecedented public health crisis and the importance of gig jobs to vulnerable populations. Collapse

Abstract: This article analyzes the ICT-related behavior of the five ‘system-relevant’ Greek banks in the first years 2010–2014 of the Greek economic crisis. We conclude that besides the standard immediate reaction to the crisis by reducing ICT-related expenses, the Greek banks in a later phase of the economic crisis proceeded to a substantial rationalization of their ICT processes/practices and improvement of their ICT capabilities, as well as the adaptation of their ICT plans to the crisis conditions. Abstract: Economic crises often result in massive job loss. However, although reduced employment has been shown to have many negative consequences for the affected individuals, it may also push them into new activities, such as provision of service to their communities. In this paper, we show how individuals engage in socially useful activities after an increase in unemployment. Specifically we document increased online content generation at Wikipedia, the world’s largest user generated knowledge repository. Leveraging German district-level and European country-level unemployment data we analyze the relationship between the economic crisis in 2008–2010 and contributions to Wikipedia. For both data sets we find increased socially valuable activity in the form of knowledge acquisition and contributions to Wikipedia. For German districts, we observe an increased rate of content generation on Wikipedia in districts that faced greater increases in unemployment. The effect of unemployment on content generation is even stronger at the European country level. Our findings suggest that public goods provision increases as a positive side effect of economic crises. Collapse

Abstract: We provide an analysis of the costs and benefits of blockholding in Europe, where it is a dominant, but certainly not universal, corporate governance strategy for shareholders of publicly listed firms. We find that the effectiveness of blockholding is conditioned by the specific labor institutions that distinguish European countries from the rest of the world, and that these institutional effects involve both competition and cooperation between blockholders and collective labor interests. We also find that relational blockholders are better able to cope with, or benefit from, these institutional effects than arm's-length blockholders. Empirically, we use advanced meta-analytic methods on a total sample of 748,569 firm-year observations, derived from 162 studies covering 23 European countries. Collapse

Abstract: This paper uses a data-mining approach to develop bankruptcy prediction models suitable for normal and crisis economic conditions. It observes the dynamics of model change from normal to crisis conditions and provides interpretation of bankruptcy classifications. The bankruptcy prediction model revealed that the major variables in predicting bankruptcy were "cash flow to total assets" and "productivity of capital" under normal conditions and "cash flow to liabilities," "productivity of capital," and "fixed assets to stockholders equity and long-term liabilities" under crisis conditions. The accuracy rates of final prediction models in normal conditions and in crisis conditions were found to be 83.3 percent and 81.0 percent, respectively. When the normal model was applied in crisis situations, prediction accuracy dropped significantly in the case of bankruptcy classification (from 66.7 percent to 36.7 percent) to the level of a blind guess (35.71 percent). Therefore, the need for a different model in crisis economic conditions is justified. Collapse
