Abstract: The abrupt closure of offices during the COVID-19 lockdown has allowed millions of workers to discover advantages of remote work and led to disruptive transition from conventional office settings to remote arrangements even as the pandemic recedes. However, for firms to determine whether or not to offer remote work as a permanent working arrangement, it is essential to understand how workers value and respond to remote working opportunities. In this paper, we construct a novel dataset that comprehensively details firm-level job postings and individual-level wage records and employ difference-in-differences estimation (i.e., logit and panel regression) to examine the impact of remote work on workers' turnover and salary outcomes. Our main analyses indicate that, after the lockdown has been lifted, the propensity of switching is positively influenced by provision of remote work. Furthermore, workers who switch to remote work accept lower wage than those in onsite workplaces. Collapse

Abstract: The globalization of work raises important questions related to the employment of workers across geographies and how the complementarity or substitution of workers across country borders influences firm profitability. In particular, tension often exists regarding the substitution or complementarity of workers located outside the U.S. or within the U.S. for American firms. We investigate this question in the context of information technology (IT) professionals and assess how domestic and foreign IT professionals contribute to firm profit by utilizing a rare firm-level dataset with information on the locational composition of IT professionals within and outside the U.S. Exploiting a labor market supply-side exogenous shock induced by the American Competitiveness in the Twenty-First Century Act (AC21), which increased the availability of H-1B visas in the U.S. in 2001, we find that foreign IT professionals located offshore and American IT professionals located onshore complement each other in generating profits. Our model and empirical findings are important both for informing firm choices and for shaping and creating public policies that so far appear to have been informed more by emotion than by data and science. Abstract: This study investigates the negative relationship between firm risk and accounting performance known in the strategy field as the Bowman paradox, which has been generally attributed to differences across firms in their willingness to take risk. Most research to date relies on the behavioral theory of the firm to suggest that underperformers take greater risks to increase their performance to their reference point. As an alternative explanation, we suggest that the Bowman paradox may result from the inherent vulnerability of low performers to negative external shocks. Our panel analysis of 2,681 U.S. firms from 1980 to 2010 confirms that firms with lower performance within their industry are more affected by negative shocks to the economy. The asymmetric vulnerability of low performers to external events makes their overall accounting performance more volatile and difficult to predict by market analysts, even if all firms have a similar attitude toward risk taking and capabilities to manage change. Our vulnerability explanation is also supported by our empirical analysis of the 2008 global financial crisis as a natural experiment. Furthermore, we find strong evidence of a negative risk–return relationship using different methods to control for their endogeneity. Collapse

Abstract: We connect two distinct streams of research on categories to study the role of within-category typicality in the context of legitimacy shocks. We argue that, following a legitimacy shock, member organizations of the tainted, focal category suffer equally, irrespective of their typicality. However, only the typical members of the newly favored, oppositional category benefit. Therefore, the effects of legitimacy shocks are asymmetrically influenced by typicality. We argue this pattern is the result of a two-stage process of categorization by audiences, whereby audiences prioritize distinctions between organizations in a newly favored category and spend limited efforts considering distinctions in the tainted, focal category. We examine our theory in the context of the U.S. financial services industry, where four different kinds of organizations engage in competition: traditional commercial banks, community banks, single-bond credit unions, and multibond credit unions. Consistent with our theory, we show that both traditional commercial banks and community banks suffer in terms of deposit market share following the legitimacy shock of the 2007 financial crisis, but the relative gains to credit unions are strongest for single-bond credit unions. Abstract: This article analyzes the ICT-related behavior of the five ‘system-relevant’ Greek banks in the first years 2010–2014 of the Greek economic crisis. We conclude that besides the standard immediate reaction to the crisis by reducing ICT-related expenses, the Greek banks in a later phase of the economic crisis proceeded to a substantial rationalization of their ICT processes/practices and improvement of their ICT capabilities, as well as the adaptation of their ICT plans to the crisis conditions. Abstract: In dynamic business environments, the underlying true data pattern changes rapidly. Machine learning models built upon historical data may not be responsive to the changes. A simple solution is to re-train a machine learning model using the re-collected current data. However, current data are often scarce. Therefore, it would be optimal to adapt the machine learning model built on historical data to the current period. In this study, we propose a two-step transfer learning method for enhancing machine learning in dynamic data environments. Our insight is that, by comparing current data and historical data, we gain information on the change of data environments, which guides the training of machine learning using historical and current data sets simultaneously. In this research-in-progress, we evaluate our method and an existing state-of-art algorithm in the earnings prediction tasks. Preliminary results show the effectiveness of transfer learning in dynamic business environments. Collapse

Abstract: Information technology (IT) represents a large portion of an organization’s investments. Prior research has identified the linkage between IT investment and productivity. Numerous factors affect the value an organization can derive from its IT investment. However, extant literature has insufficiently studied IT governance’s impact on IT’s business value. In this study, we help to fill this gap by investigating the effects of IT decision making structure mechanisms and senior management’s IT governance involvement on the relationship between IT investment and organizational performance. This study builds on a novel framework that integrates two theories on IT in an organizational setting: strategic choice theory and contingency theory. We pool organization-level IT investment and IT governance practice data with other organization characteristics to investigate the moderating effects of IT governance practices. The empirical analyses reveal a positive moderating effect of IT decision marking structure mechanisms on the IT investment–organization performance relationship. Nevertheless, the results indicate that senior management’s IT involvement has no significant effect on this relationship. This study shows the importance of IT governance for organizations to effectively leverage their IT investment. Collapse

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of confidence in how both new and experienced entrepreneurs interpret and make sense of their business environment to inform decision-making. We illustrate our conceptual arguments with descriptive results from a large-scale (n = 6289) survey on entrepreneurs’ perception of business performance and their decisions taken at a time of uncertainty in an economic downturn. Quantitative findings are stratified along experiential lines to explore heterogeneity in entrepreneurial decision-making and directly inform our conceptual arguments, while qualitative data from open questions are used to explain the role of confidence. Newer entrepreneurs are found to be more optimistic in the face of environmental risk, which impacts on their decision-making and innovative capabilities. However, the more experienced entrepreneurs warily maintain margin and restructure to adapt to environmental changes. Instead of looking directly at the confidence of individuals, we show how confidence impacts sensemaking, and ultimately, decision-making. These insights inform research on the behaviour of novice and experienced entrepreneurs in relation to innovative business activities. Specifically, blanket assumptions on the role of confidence may be misplaced as its impact changes with experience to alter how entrepreneurs make sense of their environment. Collapse

Abstract: In this study, we investigated how “good” IT management with its linkages to other factors influence IT business value (ITBV). First, we identified potential model constructs, then hypothesized about the relationships between the constructs and finally integrated the hypotheses into a research model. We empirically probed the hypotheses and our dynamic research model. We used survey data of 642 responses collected with annual surveys from CxOs during the years 2013, 2014 and 2015. Empirical results confirmed that the research model factors affected IT business value positively. The perceived importance of IT was discovered to be an antecedent to IT management. Both these constructs were detected to influence IT business value indirectly through the other model constructs. As a feedback, the perceived importance of IT depends strongly on IT business value. Abstract: The phenomenon of herding behavior can be observed throughout human societies and has been discussed from different perspectives in research areas such as information systems or finance. In this context, financial analysts have been found to exhibit a disposition towards herding behavior. We identify the topic selection within analyst reports as a potential source for the detection of herding behavior among financial analysts. In this paper, we utilize a qualitative dataset of about 140,000 analyst reports and 1,500 conference call transcripts. Building on the topic modeling technique latent Dirichlet allocation, we calculate similarity scores between the respective documents. Potential herding behavior is observable by revealing exceptional topic structures within groups of analyst reports. In this study, these are found especially during a phase of economic recession: the financial crisis spanning from 2008 to 2010. Viewing prospects, this approach might complement existing research in herding behavior by quantifying qualitative data not only within the financial domain but also in other research areas.
