Abstract: When analyzing empirical phenomena, the implicit or explicit assumptions we have of rela tionality guide what we take as the primary units of analysis and how we study them. This paper investigates and expands on the notion of relationality and relational explanations in the Critical Realist (CR) paradigm of Information Systems (IS) research. As digital technologies are becoming increasingly adaptive to the social and socio-technical structures they are embedded in, it is necessary to expand the field's conceptual tools in its study of digital phenomena. Therefore, to explain why the digital seems more tightly coupled to social phenomena than other types of technologies, the concept of transformational emergence is introduced. The key argument is that the malleability of digital entities entails that they are disposed to transform by emergence, which is key to understanding the constitutive relationality between the social and the technical in contemporary digital phenomena. This has fundamental implications for CR-based theories in the IS field, most notably Affordance theory and Representation theory. Collapse

Abstract: The relation between technologies and humans, and how digital technologies change the nature of this relation, are key theoretical issues underlying Information Systems research. Starting from a critical realist position, two questions are asked: First, what are the key characteristics of the difference between the traditional interaction between humans and technology, and the ways we deal with digital technology? Second, what can critical realism learn from strong sociomateriality in answering this question? I argue that critical realism should engage with strong sociomateriality, not by accepting its conception of reality, but by following its implications and empirical focus. Centering on the realist concept of emergence, I offer a reading that can account for many of the implications of strong sociomateriality. To explain how the digital is more tightly coupled to social phenomena than other types of technologies, the concept of transformational emergence is introduced to Information Systems literature. The argument is illustrated by a reanalysis of Scott and Orlikowski’s seminal study of TripAdvisor. The key argument is that the malleability of digital entities entails that they are disposed to transform by emergence, which is key to understanding the empirical inseparability between the social and the material in contemporary phenomena. Abstract: During a series of recent natural catastrophes, social media has played an increasingly prominent and varied role in crisis response, ranging from facilitating the recruitment of volunteers during an earthquake to supporting spiritual recovery after a hurricane. In this paper, we propose that social media, beyond the conventional role of information support, can also function as boundary objects, which are crucial in spanning the boundaries among involved parties that inherently restrict crisis response. Using the 2011 Thailand floods as a case study, we present a conceptual model of the role of social media in enabling a coordinated response to disasters. More specifically, the model presents three distinct processes of emergence and the corresponding boundary objects enabled by the use of social media, which are important in bridging the cognitive, relational and social boundaries among the various entities involved in crisis response. Abstract: The last decade has seen the development of new information technology for work computerization commonly called groupware. Groupware applications support organizational computing and communications, and enable the distribution of work without regard to time and geographic barriers. As more of these applications are implemented in work settings they are precipitating profound changes in organizational processes. Although some studies have illuminated aspects of the technology–organization interaction process, more work is still needed to understand and articulate the dynamics of it. This research takes an emergence theory approach to analyzing and articulating some of the technology–organization interaction dynamics. The paper reports on a longitudinal field study of implementation and use of a groupware application in a distributed work environment. It discusses the continuing emergence of the groupware application and the organizational process it supports. The research builds upon a stream of social action and process theory research that have examined the interaction of information technology and organizational processes. This work makes several important contributions to IS research. It extends the reach of technology–organization interaction studies. It develops a descriptive model of some of the interaction dynamics of IT applications and organizational processes, upon which future empirical studies can be based. It provides an exemplar of intensive research into organizational processes and proposes that groupware applications are themselves data for the study of organizations. Collapse
