Abstract: Digitalization has fundamentally changed organizational structures and processes and affects how people interact with each other, thereby impacting organizational culture. Given the pervasiveness of digitalization today, it is useful to study its profound effects on organizational culture through new theoretical lenses. In this paper, we offer a fresh perspective on organizational culture in the digital world. We accomplish this by inte grating two competing perspectives and then leveraging the new perspective to identify digital cultural resources and propose a conceptualization of digital culture. We frame our conceptualization around the cultural resources for digitalization and describe four digital culture archetypes. Collapse

Abstract: To ensure that an intended target group accepts and uses an information system (IS) is a major challenge for service systems engineering and a key interest in IS research. On the one hand, individuals’ cultural values affect their willingness to use an IS; on the other hand, information technology (IT) is neither value-neutral and, thus, also affects IT acceptance and usage. Therefore, the adaptation of IS should consider both sources of value. Thus, in this paper, we present the theory-driven design of a method for culturesensitive IS adaptation that draws on IT-culture conflict theory. Our two-fold evaluation approach results show that the method enables to create feasible results for developing culture-sensitive design solutions for IS. As a theoretical contribution, we contribute to the exploration of culture in IS development; as a practical contribution, we provide guidance in how to adapt IS for specific target groups. Collapse

Abstract: This paper presents a polylithic framework of review and theory development (RTD) papers. Based upon a reflective analysis of review papers that I have written, read, and/or reviewed, I build a framework suggesting four types of RTD papers: organizing reviews, assessing reviews, specifictheorizing reviews, and broad-theorizing reviews. The four types vary according to the research focus and research objectives, with research focus ranging from primarily description to the identification of gaps, and research objective ranging from primarily synthesizing to primarily theorizing. The framework and accompanying discussion are intended to provide scholars a perspective of the different ways that theory development and review papers intersect. The paper proposes criteria to help evaluate the quality of RTD papers and provides suggestions to authors on how to craft RTD papers. Collapse

Abstract: The introduction of new information systems oftentimes requires organizational changes to realize improvements in a company’s performance. Still, many attempts to bring such technology driven organizational change (i.e., technochange) into practice fail. In this regard, cultural misfits are described to be a decisive cause for organizations’ resistance to change. With this paper, we outline our case study approach of investigating culture caused misfits in technochange projects using the theory of IT-culture conflicts. By ascribing cultural values to IT, we will identify potential cultural misfits concerning IT in a comprehensive and theory guided way. Based on insights we gain from a case study conducted during a Customer Relationship Management system integration in the energy sector, we will provide guidance on how to overcome cultural misfits in technochange projects as a practical contribution. As a theoretical contribution, we contribute to the exploration of culture and its influence on organizational outcomes in technochange. Collapse

Abstract: Mobile learning enables learners to integrate learning activities into daily routines. Information systems research emphasizes that technology-mediated learning (TML) has to be adapted to cultural differences. Integrating a mobile learning application into a new context can cause conflicts as values embedded in the mobile learning application can conflict with values of the context in which it is introduced. With this paper, we propose a theory-driven design approach to avoid culture conflicts in mobile learning. Based on the implementation of a mobile learning application in Chinese vocational schools, we derive requirements from IT-culture conflict theory as well as practice, which are addressed with design elements and implemented in the application. Our results show that cultural adaptation leads to improved cognitive learning outcomes. As a practical contribution, we provide guidance on how to overcome culture conflicts; as a theoretical contribution, we contribute to the exploration of culture in the usage of TML. Collapse

Abstract: Mobile learning allows for the embedding of learning into daily routines by means of authentic learning scenarios. In this context, IS research emphasizes the importance of considering individual differences such as cultural differences when using IT in learning scenarios. First, culture is a critical variable that strongly influences IT acceptance and use. Second, teaching concepts differ heavily across cultures. With this research-inprogress paper, we propose a theory-driven design approach to overcome culture conflicts for mobile learning applications. We derive requirements from IT-culture conflict theory and practice, which are addressed by design elements and implemented in a mobile learning application that is now being adapted for China. As a practical contribution of our research, we provide systematic guidance to overcome culture conflicts; as a theoretical contribution, we enrich culture theory by considering and resolving conflicts for mobile learning applications. Abstract: There has been a growing number of studies in the IS literature that have investigated the role of culture in the success or failure of Information Systems. These studies show how culture can affect the use of Information Systems and how Information Systems adoption can influence culture. However, there is still lack of studies that investigate how Information and Communication Technologies can modify the national culture of a country. To address this gap, we use the IT-Culture Conflict theory (Leidner and Kayworth 2006) as a theoretical base to explore how Social Networking technology influences the culture of a developing country. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 27 Arab female participants from the Arabian Gulf region. This study has important implications for both research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Since Bandura’s proposal of self-efficacy, studies have explained behavioral motivations at the individual level. However, little is known concerning self-efficacy’s applicability at the group level in the information systems security (InfoSec) domain. Also, despite extensive cross-cultural analyses at the individual level, works at a group level are still in infancy. We, therefore, define InfoSec self-efficacy as a group-level construct and examine its impact on InfoSec vulnerability from cross-cultural perspectives. We draw on interdependent security and separate InfoSec vulnerability into vulnerability from self and partners. The goal is fourfold: (i) proposing InfoSec collective efficacy as a cultural construct, (ii) modeling relationships among InfoSec collective efficacy, InfoSec vulnerability, vulnerability from partners, and InfoSec control awareness from crosscultural perspectives, (iii) validating the model using data collected from executive-level IS managers in the U.S. and South Korea, and (iv) providing implications for IS managers operating in multinational businesses. Abstract: Digitally enabled social networks, encompassing social media applications such as wikis, blogs and social networking sites, have the potential to dramatically change organizational culture by building communities, promoting information sharing and fostering collaboration. Although organizational social media site (hereinafter SMS) implementations are proliferating, these technologies often do not harmoniously combine with traditional organizational cultures. To shed light on social media's impact on organizational life, this paper draws on an interpretive case study to investigate a global security company's efforts to implement a digitally enabled social network as part of a cultural change effort. Conceptually, based on the theory of IT–culture conflict, this paper underscores the interplay between organizational culture and technology. Our study finds that conflicts can arise between employees' workplace values and the values they ascribe to social media. This can result in an IT–culture system conflict, which organizations can address using policy-based, socialization-based and leadership-based mechanisms aimed at bringing cultural values and social media site values into alignment.
