Abstract: IT professionals represent a growing group of highly educated migrants in different countries, yet research on their workplace integration is scarce. Applying a combined theoretical framework of Hofstede's culture dimensions and functional theory of language approach, this paper addresses the research need in investigating how migrant IT professionals to Sweden integrate into the workplace and the role of ICTs in mitigating integration challenges. Fifteen (15) interviews with IT professionals from India and Pakistan were analyzed using Thematic Content Analysis. Results uncover migrants experiencing language barriers and cultural differences, which impede developing relationships with colleagues and career opportunities. Our findings indicate that although ICTs, primarily machine translation applications, are indispensable for supporting communication between migrants and locals, collegial support is still essential for managing intercultural interactions, contributing to migrants' feelings of connectedness at work and a sense of belonging. Workplace inclusion and suggestions for practitioners are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: While mobile health (mHealth) apps play an increasingly important role in digitalized health care, little is known regarding the effects of specific mHealth app features on user satisfaction across different healthcare system contexts. Using personal health record (PHR) apps as an example, this study identifies how potential users in Germany and Denmark evaluate a set of 26 app features, and whether evaluation differences can be explained by the differences in four pertinent user characteristics, namely privacy concerns, mHealth literacy, mHealth self-efficacy, and adult playfulness. Based on survey data from both countries, we employed the Kano method to evaluate PHR features and applied a quartile-based sample-split approach to understand the underlying relationships between user characteristics and their perceptions of features. Our results not only reveal significant differences in 14 of the features between Germans and Danes, they also demonstrate which of the user characteristics best explain each of these differences. Our two key contributions are, first, to explain the evaluation of specific PHR app features on user satisfaction in two different healthcare contexts and, second, to demonstrate how to extend the Kano method in terms of explaining subgroup differences through user characteristic antecedents. The implications for app providers and policymakers are discussed. Collapse

The development of language learning beckons for more attractive educational tools such as educational games. This paper proposes an interactive 3D game that automatically customizes corrections, provided to a multitude of various types of dictational errors and consequently assesses the learner. Such a game requires high graphical level and natural language processing. It is based on the connection between Unity3D platform and NooJ (Natural language processing) platform. Abstract: Sensemaking in Requirements Engineering (RE) relies on knowledge transfer, communication, and negotiation of project stakeholders. It is a critical and challenging aspect of Information Systems (IS) development. One of the most fundamental aspects of RE is the specification of traceable, unambiguous, and operationalizable functional and nonfunctional requirements. This remains a nontrivial task in the face of the complexity inherent in RE due to the lack of well-documented, systematic procedures that facilitate a structured analysis of the qualitative data from stakeholder interviews, observations, and documents that are typically the input to this activity. This research develops a systematic and traceable procedure, for non-functional requirements the Grounded and Linguistic-Based Requirements Analysis Procedure (GLAP), which can fill this gap by incorporating perspectives from Grounded Theory Method, linguistic analysis of language quality, Volere typology, and the Nonfunctional Requirements Framework without significantly deviating from existing practice. The application of GLAP is described along with empirical illustrations using RE data from a redesign initiative of a library website of a public university in the United States. An outlook is given on further work and necessary evaluation steps. Collapse

Abstract: This paper extends existing understandings of how actors' constructions of ambiguity shape the emergent process of strategic action. We theoretically elaborate the role of rhetoric in exploiting strategic ambiguity, based on analysis of a longitudinal case study of an internationalization strategy within a business school. Our data show that actors use rhetoric to construct three types of strategic ambiguity: protective ambiguity that appeals to common values in order to protect particular interests, invitational ambiguity that appeals to common values in order to invite participation in particular actions, and adaptive ambiguity that enables the temporary adoption of specific values in order to appeal to a particular audience at one point in time. These rhetorical constructions of ambiguity follow a processual pattern that shapes the emergent process of strategic action. Our findings show that (1) the strategic actions that emerge are shaped by the way actors construct and exploit ambiguity, (2) the ambiguity intrinsic to the action is analytically distinct from ambiguity that is constructed and exploited by actors, and (3) ambiguity construction shifts over time to accommodate the emerging pattern of actions. Abstract: The necessary knowledge transfer and communication between project members is identified as a relevant issue in information systems development (ISD). Nevertheless, the impact of linguistic communication on ISD and requirements specification in its processual nature is still an open issue. In our research, we claim that effectiveness of ISD depends on the ability to manage how people deal with language in practice and reach a shared understanding. We propose the concept of language quality as a suitable means for analyzing the emergence of concise and meaningful requirements in ISD. By applying the thereby developed language quality dimensions on a real project, we were able to obtain practice-grounded propositions for practitioners to consider and for researchers to further evaluate the consequences of different actions on the interaction and communication processes for this particular field. Abstract: Data warehousing (DWH) projects are among the most expensive projects of companies in the financial industry. Problems like budget overruns and low end-user acceptance lead to the assumption that despite intensive research over the last two decades the relevant elements determining the success of such projects are not sufficiently investigated. On the basis of a case study about the implementation of a group-wide DWH the author analysis the existence of those still inadequately considered success factors. One challenging hurdle that project members have to clear is the complete fulfillment of interface specifications elaborated during conceptual modeling phase. The author chooses an interdisciplinary approach that involves established language theories and applies them to real-life observations in the case study to identify the necessary prerequisites. Subsequently rooms for improvement in the project approach are derived to guarantee a successful knowledge transfer among project members. Abstract: The financial industry relies greatly on information technology (IT) because of its work with immaterial goods. Nowadays, most information collected by a financial institution is usually stored in a central data warehouse system. This central financial data warehouse (FDWH) is permanently under construction. Requirements from all over the bank have to be met by FDWH projects in an ongoing process. These requirements need to be communicated to the FDWH project team to do implementations properly throughout the system landscape. Especially the creation of extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) processes depends on the project team’s communication ability and given communication barriers. Enhancing recent research in FDWH a theoretical efficiency model based on philosophy of language and project management fundamentals is built in this paper. The conceptualization of information systems development projects as language communities is an important presumption for this theoretical model. Suggestions derived from this model lead project managers of FDWH projects to more appropriate decisions keeping efficiency drivers in communication in mind. Collapse

Abstract: As language is the venue for the concretisation of concepts and entities in information systems development (ISD), language unambiguousness is understood as an ideal basis for the success of the consolidation process in information systems development. In contrast, a fundamental postulation of language theories is the inherent ambiguity of natural language. Therefore, the analysis of how language consensus can be reached in an effective manner is of particular interest for collaborative ISD. We claim that the effectiveness of ISD depends on the ability to manage the question of how people deal with language in practice and reach consensus in the concrete ISD process. This requirement leads us to the point of emergence of language: the language interaction setting. Hence, we analysed the language interaction in an ISD project and identified different language interaction levels which serve as orientation for specific interventions in an interaction setting, enabling an intensification of consensus negotiation.
