Abstract: Theory is an essential part of design research and helps us to explain what we see or guide what we design. In the paper, we shed light on how kernel theories are used in developing design principles in Design Science Research (DSR). We do this by reporting on a systematic literature review, from which we have extracted a set of six mechanisms to operationalize kernel theory. Each mechanism consists of an activity (e.g., "transform to" or "derive from") and an application point (e.g., meta-requirements or design principles) representing wherein the chain of concepts the kernel theory was used. The paper reflects on what we have learned about the use of kernel theories and translates this into recommendations and issues for further research. We provide researchers with guidance to use kernel theories more efficiently and give a big picture of the possibilities of kernel theory operationalization. Collapse

Abstract: We introduce the Information Systems Ontology (ISO), a new ontology for the Information Systems (IS) discipline designed to enable automated knowledge synthesis and meta-analysis of research findings in IS. We constructed ISO in a methodical manner, following known best practices for ontology construction. We also conducted a series of ontology refinement steps in which we compared and extended ISO by extracting and examining both overlapping and missing key phrases from scientific articles and existing classification schemas. To evaluate ISO, we extracted author-defined keywords from more than 7,000 articles of the senior scholars’ basket of journals and measured terminological coverage. In one experiment, we found that our ontology included 3.6 times more author-defined keywords than an established classification schema for IS. In the future, we plan to use ISO to automatically annotate important IS terms and concepts in IS articles to help synthesize and analyze knowledge in IS. Collapse

Abstract: Design Thinking (DT) is a widely used approach to develop human-centric solutions in organizational settings. One of the main activities within DT is prototyping, which allows for visualizing design ideas. However, the geographical distribution of teams and the lack of suitable working environments challenge these practices. This paper presents a design science research project that resolves these issues through virtual reality. Drawing on findings for creativity support, we derive meta-requirements and design principles and develop the DTinVR application that allows teams to visualize their ideas based on gestural interaction. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to enable collaborative prototyping using hand tracking. We confirm the effectiveness and positive usability of DTinVR by means of three evaluations and discuss how our design principles can help to develop immersive solutions. The findings of this study contribute to the design knowledge on immersive applications in the information systems discipline. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we draw on evidence from a case study to explore how to enable organizational creativity within a centralised information system. We argue that, even if the project leaders were seeking to enable organizational creativity using a centralized system they overlooked organizational climate factors. To understand these issues, we used the componential creativity theory to explain the influence of creativity encouragements, resources and management practice) toward organizational creativity.
