Abstract: We conducted a field experiment to compare the effects of information systems (IS) supporting reflective disclosure and information democratization on the sustainability footprint of a routine organizational work practice, paper printing. We find that both sensemaking processes lead to employees reducing their printing; however, the processes are interchangeable and do not mutually reinforce each other’s effects. This finding contrasts a latent assumption of prior research about a co-dependence between reflective disclosure and infor mation democratization, and suggests organizations have a choice in how they can design and use IS to help employees make sense of different possibilities for more eco-efficient work. Abstract: The information systems (IS) literature elaborates on how firms develop organizational agility based on organizational capabilities to sense and respond to rapidly changing environments. However, the underlying mechanism of how companies and their chief executive officers (CEOs) understand and implement digital technologies to foster organizational agility is lacking. The technological frame concept provides an impetus to explain the process by which CEOs' sensemaking of digital technologies influences organizational agility. Our paper draws on the individual-level perspective of the technological frame concept and proposes a mediating role of digital business capabilities, composed of digital strategy, digital integration, and digital control. Our quantitative research design is based on findings derived from 386 German CEOs and confirms that CEOs' technological frame influences organizational agility through digital business capabilities. Thereby, we expand the concept of the technological frame on the individual level and contribute to the IS literature by revealing the mechanism of how CEOs' sensemaking influences organizational agility. Abstract: Despite the worldwide rapidly growing social media use, previous surveys have shown an adoption rate below average among SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises). The problem of why and how SMEs engage with social media has received scant attention. Informed by structuration and sensemaking theories, this qualitative inquiry attempts to close this gap by scrutinizing cognitive and collective pre-adoption aspects. Differently perceived technology features, the structural context of the ecosystem, and the triggering conditions as well as their role for individual and collective understanding and decision-making activities form the building blocks of a processual framework and the derivation of further research avenues. Abstract: We explore how organizations manage and make sense of data collaboratively to drive digital transformation. We present the results of an in-depth case study of a financial organization that used Data Operations (DataOps) -a collaborative data management practice to transform its digital-first offering initiative and thereby redefining its value proposition. Drawing on sensemaking theory, we develop a process model that explains how organizations use DataOps to perceive cues through data democratization, extract plausible and comprehensive insights from data through data storytelling to make interpretations, and leverage data products to take actions that drive data-driven digital transformation. Our findings have implications for data-driven digital transformation as we show how DataOps constitutes a new class of data management practices that enable collaboration between data managers and data consumers and allow organizations to make evidence-based decisions to drive their digital transformation. Abstract: Educational videos on social media are widely used in informal learning. However, empirical studies hardly look into sensemaking, a key aspect in the construction of meaning and knowledge, of educational videos on social media in informal learning, despite the growing interest and practice in educative sensemaking. This study addresses this research gap. We draw upon sensemaking theories and investigate how the physical properties of educational videos affect sensemaking. Our research shows how information control, anchor, and noise are associated with committed interpretation in the learning communities to understand the scientific inquiry at hand with data from YouTube educational videos. This study makes timely contributions to the literature on the educative sensemaking in informal learning on social media. It also offers insights into the better design of educational videos to facilitate sensemaking and informal learning. Collapse

Abstract: In design science research, two important challenges exist to achieve greater influence in research and practice: (1) foster frequent reuse of artifacts and design theories and (2) increase knowledge accumulation in the field. In this article, we argue that replication studies could support the accumulation and development of design theories to reach a state that encourages reuse of artifacts and design theories. However, it is unclear precisely how replication relates to design science research—that is, what outcomes replication produces and how researchers should apply it within design science research. This study proposes three overarching research questions (Does the artifact provide utility? Is the design theory complete? What design theory components fit a larger context?) and eight categories for replication studies in design science research (Test, Redesign, Justification, Adaptation, Explanation, Update, Recreation, and Meta-Replication). We offer guidance to researchers, editors, and reviewers on how to conduct replication studies in design science research and why such studies are so critical. Our goal is to provide “food for thought” on the significance of design science research replication studies and, in turn, help facilitate their widespread implementation and publication. We conclude our study by highlighting areas for further discussion and investigation, such as defining replication procedures and conceptualizing genuine replication goals within design science research. Abstract: Despite suggestions that analytics projects have value, the literature has, at times, glossed over the obstacles organizations must overcome to realize value from analytics. This research reports on a longitudinal case study of one organization's efforts to improve its profit margins by incorporating analytics into how it generates revenue. The case describes a business unit launching the organization's analytics initiatives, which they deliberately hid from their information technology department to reduce interference. Our study finds that realizing shadow analytics value involves a 3-phase sensemaking process that redefines organizational structures and sets organizations on the path towards digital transformation. These findings offer implications to the mechanisms and structures necessary for realizing value from analytics. Practically, analytics projects may require managers to rethink project management practices and business unit’s and IT department’s roles in analytics projects. Collapse

Abstract: The fatal August 9, 2014, officer-involved shooting of a Black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, sparked a series of local protests that culminated in a national social movement: Black Lives Matter. In this study, through a minute-by-minute analysis of crowd dynamics, I find that the eventual social movement strategy emerged from spontaneous acts of anger in protest crowds within the first 48 hours of the shooting. This finding is surprising in light of social movement scholarship, in which strategy is thought to follow from rationality and decision making within formal organizations, not emotionality and spontaneous action within informal crowds. By coupling a historical analysis of protest and policing practices with a comparison of prominent theories of crowds, emotion, and strategy, I theorize how strategy can emerge from spontaneous acts of anger as part of a distributed sensemaking process in crowds, rather than conflating strategy with rationality and deliberate planning in organizations. Taken in sum, this study challenges prevailing ideas about the wisdom of crowds and exemplifies the immanent potential for change, in which our seemingly “micro” actions are not trivial but can influence even the most “macro” of strategic outcomes. Abstract: Sensemaking is a critical activity in organizations. It is a process through which individuals ascribe meanings to events which forms the basis to facilitate collective action. However, the role of organizations, technology and individuals and their interaction in the process of sensemaking has not been sufficiently explored. This novel study seeks to address this gap by proposing a framework that explains how the interplay among organizations, technology and individuals enables sensemaking in the process of cybersecurity incident response. We propose that Organizations, Technology, and Individuals are the key components that interact in various ways to facilitate enactment, selection and retention activities (Sensemaking activities) in Incident Response. We argue that sensemaking in Incident Response is the outcome of this interaction. This interaction allows organizations to respond to cybersecurity incidents in a comprehensive manner. Collapse

Abstract: Extant information systems security research identified and examined a variety of individual as well as organizational factors influencing information security behaviors, but rarely offered sufficient theoretical insight into the interaction of the individual factors with the organizational context in impacting information security behaviors. To fill this gap, this study proposes a theoretical framework that builds on the concepts of organizational culture and sensemaking to show that: 1) information security behaviors are outcomes of sensemaking; and 2) sensemaking is enabled as well as constrained by organizational culture. This study further epitomizes that information security diagnosing, solving, and performing behaviors emerge as outcomes of sensemaking about information security during the organization's interactions with technology. Theoretical and pragmatic contributions of this framework and future research directions are also demonstrated. Collapse
