Abstract: The relationship between digital transformation and organizational identity is an immanent topic in IS, which is especially relevant for small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) due to their reliance on implementing digital technologies to stay competitive. However, little is known about this relationship in this specific context. Based on theories and concepts about digital transformation, organizational identity, and SMEs, we conducted an in-depth case study with a German Mittelstand company in the engineering sector. Building on a conceptual archetype framework, we reveal that different manifestations of digital transformation have different impact on organizational identity. Thereby, we contribute to IS research by highlighting the mutual dependency of these concepts and by underlining the necessity for being aligned to the specifics of SMEs. Moreover, we derive practical implications for managers that help to anticipate the effects of digital transformation within their strategic decision processes. Collapse

Abstract: Using electronic health (eHealth) platforms is an approach for reaching more people to get services—for example during pandemics or disasters. eHealth platforms help reduce costs and improve the general quality of healthcare. However, establishing eHealth platforms at the national level is challenging due to legal, privacy, and financial constraints. Furthermore, studies on the national eHealth platform in the public sector are scarce. This motivated us to study and understand the process of implementing a public national eHealth platform. We use a qualitative case study as a research approach and the theory of practice and concept of site as lenses to examine the platformization practices of three national-level eHealth platforms. We contribute to the literature by identifying key features of site-shifting in eHealth and describing the practices and features of involved practitioners and the site regarding the process of establishing the platform. Our findings benefit practitioners, as the platformization phases can be seen as lessons when establishing a national eHealth platform. Additionally, the three approaches discussed in this study could be seen as a guide to creating national eHealth platforms. Collapse

Abstract: As the use of IT for health management increases, threats to exacerbate existing health inequalities increases. Through semi-structured expert interviews, this qualitative study aims to examine the SocioCultural characteristics associated with access to and use of technologies for health managing purposes and its relationship with health literacy. Inspired by Bourdieu, the paper uses a socio-cultural perspective to understand the choices and lifestyle of individuals, based on the underlying human mechanisms that may function as determinants of the (in)equality which digitalization of health services may entail. The study focuses on the following question: How do social factors create and reproduce (in)equality in behavioral skills, regarding digital health technologies? The study contributes with a multidimensional perspective on social factors that influences the use and acceptance of digital health technologies from the expert’s perspectives. Collapse

Abstract: Information and communications technology can be used to improve the social and economic situation in developing countries. However, a broad range of challenges has been identified, and one of these relates to the power asymmetries in developing countries. These power asymmetries are often deeply entrenched. We conducted an in-depth critical case study of an information and communication technology for development project in India. We looked at the historical and cultural context, the roles of the actors, and the use of symbolic practices. Using Bourdieu’s theory of practice and, in particular, his concept of habitus, our findings reveal how symbolic practices can work against ICT projects in developing countries. These symbolic practices, rooted in a particular culture, are tied to and constitutive of power asymmetries. We offer a framework for studying habitus in information systems research on information and communication technology for development that may be useful for others who wish to explore similar questions in their case study research. Abstract: Digital transformation has become a central construct in information systems (IS) research. Current conceptualizations largely attribute transformation to intentionality, focus on transfor mation within a single organization, or assign technology the role of a disruptive agent of change. Likewise, “digital” tends to be a general category of technology, rather than a specific technology enacted in a time and place. Inspired by Schatzkian practice theory and its site ontology, we suggest a contextual viewpoint on digital transformation and call it “relational digital transfor mation.” We analyzed the change dynamics in the context of taxi dispatch practice in Finland, studying the changing taxi dispatch platforms over years. We investigated five powerful industry actors: two incumbents, two entrants, and a federation of taxi entrepreneurs. We identified events of change in the material arrangements in sites and explain the changes through the process dynamics in the focal practice. We define relational digital transformation as a process through which practice-arrangement bundles of digital technologies evolve over time. This approach assumes the default nature of an industry is to be found in the changing relations between entities rather than in entities themselves. This provides a theoretical extension to the prevailing views of digital transformation in IS literature. It enables studying digital transformation in retrospect without attributing change agency to any entities or technologies a priori. We also contribute to practice-theoretical IS literature by demonstrating how the applicability of practice theoretical analysis extends beyond microphenomena to larger industry-level changes. Abstract: Participation is critical in information systems development (ISD) for promoting effective knowledge sharing among diverse stakeholder groups. However, the emergence of new, challenging project contexts has led to calls for the 'old, tired' concept of participation to be revisited. In particular, our understanding of intergroup participation within the context of distributed teamwork remains under theorised. Distributed ISD projects require participation among both IT specialists and domain experts or users, who more often than not come from diverse geographical, organisational, and disciplinary backgrounds. In addition to geographical and temporal distances, socio-political differences between stakeholders in distributed ISD projects raise questions around the nature of participation. In this paper, we investigate how participation emerges in distributed ISD projects and the factors which support or impede its emergence, using the 'Theory of Practice' and 'Collective Reflection-in-Action' frameworks a theoretical lens. We draw on empirical findings from an in-depth case study of a 6-month distributed project called 'Health ISD', which involved a distributed team of IT specialists and clinicians. Our findings point to five socio-political factors which support or impede participation: rules, resources, interests, values, and goals. These factors act as instruments of both coordination and conflict across both face-to-face and online communications. We also identify five modes through which participation emerges: adding, challenging, ignoring, defining, and finalising. Collapse

Abstract: DSR is growing in acceptance as a research methodology in information systems for the design of innovative artefacts including design theory artefacts. Practical application of DSR can prove challenging when design theory artefacts are suggested for the first time originating from the field of practice. Within the described research context, this paper focuses on explaining how design theory artefacts were conceived as a consequence of the researcher’s immersion as a government chief information officer in South Africa. Using DSR methodology enabled the rigorous design and evaluation of a tentative theory of e-Government from an information systems perspective, comprised of a framework of twelve component design theory artefacts which may enhance the progress of e-Government in South Africa and which may have a broader application internationally. Abstract: The utilization of mobile phones is increasingly seen as a crucial means of reducing inequalities and ensuring people’s inclusion in society. Yet, an understanding of the factors affecting the use of mobile phones remains inadequate. Drawing from Sen’s capability approach and Bourdieu’s theory of practice, the findings suggest that mobile phone use affords valuable capabilities to the users. However, the generation of these capabilities is contingent on power relations in the social field – between social structures and individual’s agency. In South Africa, the capabilities of empowerment that urban refugees can generate through mobile phone use are either enhanced or hindered by interrelated factors, namely the affordances of mobile phones, socio-environmental factors, and personal factors. This paper contributes to the theory in the field of Information Systems by proposing a dynamic framework with precise constructs for theorizing and explaining the mechanisms and social practices that shape mobile phone use and the capabilities for empowerment. Abstract: As a contribution towards consolidating the information systems (IS) field, we offer a systematic method for distilling a canonical body of knowledge (BOK) for information systems development (ISD), an area that historically accounts for as much as half of all IS research. Based on an integrative synthesis of the literature, we present a map of the most significant ISD research, uncover gaps in its canons and suggest fruitful lines of inquiry for new research. Our review combines citation analysis, which identifies the field's evidence of cumulative tradition, with computer-aided textual analysis, a hermeneutically guided method that organizes the fragmented corpus of ISD literature into coherent knowledge areas. From a pool of over 6500 articles published in the IS Senior Scholars' Basket of Journals, we find 940 IS citation classics, and from that list, 466 ISD articles that offer canonical ISD knowledge distinctive to IS and complementary to other disciplines such as software engineering and project management. From this study, we offer two contributions: (1) a justification for an ISDBOK grounded in the theory of practice and professionalism, and (2) a canonical map of disciplinary ISD knowledge with areas that have demonstrated cumulative tradition and others that require the attention of IS scholars. © 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Collapse

Abstract: This paper sets out a typology for organizational ICT practice in order to derive a more holistic perspective of sociomateriality and its constituent elements (i.e. humans, objects, and practice). Seminal literature by Parsons and Bourdieu is combined with sociomateriality literature in order to offer insights into the factors that need to be investigated when conducting research into organizational ICT practice. The outlined typology is evaluated through an empirical case study of a connected health ICT project to show how the dimensions of the typology come together and contribute to a better understanding.
