Abstract: There are two major types of problems: routine problems and creative problems. Extant research has established the validity of cognitive fit theory for routine problems. However, its validity for creative problems has been left unaddressed. To advance cognitive fit theory to a (more) general theory of problem solving, we extend its original formulation to creative problems. We illustrate our extension through a contextualization to a specific creative problem, business model idea generation with the Business Model Canvas, and provide preliminary experimental evidence for our propositions. Thereby, we contribute to advancing the theory of cognitive fit, and provide a first step towards theoryguided design of modeling languages for business models. Collapse

Abstract: Conceptual models are important in understanding the domain which is to be reflected in the information systems. Development of such models involves experts in conceptual modeling techniques (ISDK experts) and experts in the domain application (ISAK experts). This paper focuses on understanding how these two types of experts interact and develop conceptual models jointly. Using an exploratory study, it was identified that in the early phase of development of conceptual models, the experts focus on understanding concepts of the domains that they are not familiar with. Later, when the experts had shared information on the concepts of the domains then they focus on developing the conceptual model. The study also indicates that the groups of experts that have high shared information are most likely to create high quality conceptual models. Collapse

Abstract: Whereas multimedia systems development (MSD) is inherently complex, and increasingly so, little is known about how multimedia designers manage or cope with this complexity. In particular, little is known about complexity beyond technical and process levels, and how such complexity impacts design activity. In this paper we construct a model of MSD based on the formulation of the broader concept of context complexity. This concept, which subsumes but also transcends technical and process complexity, is used to explain design strategies and their consequences. We identify four design contexts that explain, and are also explained by, complexity. These contexts map out the ‘landscape for action' over which design activity takes place. They shape the design environment and the responses taken to it. We use a grounded theory approach to study what designers actually do (as opposed to theorising what they should do). We argue that a better understanding of context determined and context determining strategies better informs interventions aimed at improving MSD design practice. Our main conclusion is that interventions should be directed to those situations where there is a mismatch between the level of complexity in the design context and the level of complexity in the design strategy taken in response to that context. We call these situations ‘breakdown’ contexts and examine their causes and consequences in greater detail. Our claimed contribution is to broaden the concept of design breakdowns through a specific understanding of the role and impact of (context) complexity in MSD. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we develop a framework for understanding contribution behaviors, which we define as voluntary acts of helping others by providing information. Our focus is on why and how people make contributions in geographically distributed organizations where contributions occur primarily through information technologies. We develop a model of contribution behaviors that delineates three mediating mechanisms: (1) awareness; (2) searching and matching; and (3) formulation and delivery. We specify the cognitive and motivational elements involved in these mechanisms and the role of information technology in facilitating contributions. We discuss the implications of our framework for developing theory and for designing technology to support contribution behaviors. Collapse

Abstract: For organizations to derive performance benefits, competitive advantage or simply an adequate return on their IT investments, they must devise ways to ensure that technology is used as required, accurately, creatively and innovatively by individual users. In this paper, we argue that one way in which users develop competence and skill is through their interactions with the IT support function or help desk. Help desks serve as one of the most intensively used organizational mechanisms for improving users’ knowledge about technology and how to use it (Nambisan et al. 1999). Using a foundation of knowledge transfer and learning, this paper develops a situated learning two-level framework that integrates cognitive and social cognitive theory to explain how and why the dyadic relationship between users and the IT support personnel results in important performance outcomes for both parties. Abstract: This research has identified the roots of decision support systems (DSS) research and empirically investigated the intellectual relationship between the DSS subspecialties and the reference disciplines, using cluster analysis of an author cocitation frequency matrix derived from a comprehensive database of the DSS literature over the period of 1970 through 1995. This research has traced a uni-directional flow of intellectual materials to the DSS area from its reference disciplines to probe how concepts and findings by researchers in the contributing disciplines have been picked up by DSS researchers to be applied, extended, and refined in the development of DSS research subspecialties. Cluster analysis uncovered six major areas of DSS research (group DSS, foundations, model management, user interfaces, implementation, and multiple criteria DSS) and six contributing disciplines (multiple criteria decision making, cognitive science, organization science, artificial intelligence, psychology, communication theory, and systems science). Abstract: Object-oriented approaches have received attention in management information systems development due to the advantages over the traditional approaches claimed by the proponents of the object-oriented approaches. To describe how people actually perform object-oriented analyses, this paper formalizes an object-oriented systems analysis approach. Protocol analyses of seven systems analysts, who were experienced with structured analysis, were used to formalize procedures for object-oriented analysis. The protocol analyses revealed four fundamental types of object classes in a management information system. They are: input, output, physiomorphic, and event object classes. The identification of input, output, and event classes depends upon the problem domain being analyzed. Physiomorphic classes, on the other hand, are more likely to match a schema that is perceived by the analyst based on his a priori knowledge about the problem domain classes. The protocol analyses also revealed that object classes are identified in an ad hoc manner; however, when checking the analysis, depth-first or breadth-first searching methods are often used. These, in turn, are controlled by a global backward or forward tracing strategy. Tracing the origin of data in messages was the strategy used for checking the completeness of the analysis. An experiment was conducted to compare the protocol-based object-oriented method and structured analysis. Thirty-two students who had no previous systems analysis experience were trained and then completed a problem using both techniques. The protocol-based method produced analyses that more closely matched the problem. Furthermore, it required less time to complete an analysis, and it was perceived as easier to use by the participants than the structured analysis method. Collapse

Abstract: Existing algorithmic models fail to produce accurate software development effort estimates. To address this problem, a case.based reasoning model, called Estor, was developed based on the verbal protocols of a human expert solving a set of estimation problems. Estor was then presented with 15 software effort estimation tasks. The estimates of Estor were compared to those of the expert as well as those of the function point and COCOMO estimations of the projects.The estimates generated by the human expert and Estor were more accurate and consistent than those of the function point and COCOMO methods. In fact, Estor was nearly as accurate and consistent as the expert. These results sug.'
