Abstract: Despite the generally positive consequences associated with justice, recent research suggests that supervisors cannot always enact justice, and responses to justice may not be universally positive. Thus, justice is likely to vary in both how much it is received and the employee reactions it engenders. In order to understand the range of justice responses, we develop a dynamic theory of justice by using person-environment fit to take both the value that an individual places in justice and the justice they received into account. Using this framework, we clarify the consequences of congruence versus incongruence in daily justice received and valued, which have implications for treatment discrepancies and subsequent work behavior. We also identify the differences between excess and deficient justice on cognitive and affective responses to justice. Our findings reveal that employees’ experience of justice is more complicated than simply whether the justice they received was high or low on a particular day. Using experience sampling and polynomial regression methods, we observe that not all instances in which employees receive high levels of justice are equivalent. In fact, we find that, depending on justice valued, receiving high levels of justice can be just as detrimental as receiving low levels. Additionally, we find that although both forms of justice misfit (excess and deficiency) cause-negative work outcomes, they affect these outcomes through differential responses to justice — with excess causing increased rumination and deficiency causing decreased positive affect. We conclude by discussing the implications of these findings for extant justice theory and for supervisor-employee work interactions. Collapse

Abstract: Behavioral research in information systems employing quantitative methods has traditionally relied on mainly survey-based approaches to gather subjective user data. With new advances in technology such as mobile computing, wearable devices, and social media, along with computational capabilities, organizations are in a position to leverage objective data in addressing IT issues typically addressed in behavioral research. In this paper, we propose a framework for envisioning how data analytics may be leveraged in conducting behavioral research. Particularly, the framework is explained using examples from extant research along two broad avenues, namely ‘data analytics for data generation’ and ‘data analytics for model generation.’ The article also serves as an introduction to the special issue of the Information Systems Frontiers (ISF) journal on the topic of ‘Data Analytics in Behavioral Research.’ Collapse

Abstract: As business analytics (BA) applications permeate across various industry sectors, the workforce needs to be trained and upskilled to meet the challenges of understanding and implementing analytics methodologies. To achieve payoffs from the resource investments in BA training, it is critical for enterprises to understand an individual’s learning behavior along with the process and outcome-centric satisfaction associated with a collaborative analytics training task. This study focuses on identifying the factors that influence the process of learning during BA training to entry-level BA users. Drawing on the theories of situated cognition, goal setting, and flow, we propose a model that explains how trainees in a group learn through a process that is influenced by the characteristics of BA training context through context authenticity, the traits of trainees through task motivation and preference towards teamwork. Using an experimental design built on data collection and a unique task of real visits to a historic cemetery, we found that context authenticity and task motivation have significant impact on focused immersion, which in turn significantly impacts process and outcome satisfaction for learning an analytics task. Results of this study extend and validate the theories of situated cognition, goal setting, and flow within the context of business analytics training. Based on these findings, we provide recommendations for practitioners for designing effective analytics tasks for better training outcomes. Collapse

Abstract: Anonymity in large classrooms can lead to incivilities. One goal of teachers should therefore be to decrease anonymity in the classroom by using immediacy, like talking to students and knowing their names. However, this is not always feasible if the class size is significantly larger than regular classes. Our approach tries to get the participants to install our developed artifact called C4mpUs on their personal devices, in order to create a gamified learning environment that enables a playful opportunity to connect with other peers. This way anonymity is broken down by students themselves rather than by the instructor. Our findings show that students tend to approach other participants they haven’t met before, rather than only connect with familiar peers. However, more research will need to be done to determine on further extending the level of participation when it comes to diminishing anonymity as well as on how to integrate pedagogy. Collapse

Abstract: Past research suggests that “situatedness”, i.e. the context, as well as the social interaction that occurs within it, play an important role in cognitive processes such as learning and decision-making. Thus far, IT tools have been limited in the level and type of situatedness they facilitate. The advent of virtual worlds has changed this. Virtual worlds provide open, three-dimensional platforms for creating and designing real life-like spaces; they also allow for interaction between users in the form of “avatars” in that space. This research study focuses on virtual worlds as platforms for learning and decision-making. We propose a model that explains how individuals in a group learn and make decisions through a process that is influenced by the two unique characteristics of virtual worlds that enable situatedness: the facilitation for designing real life-like spaces, and the facilitation of rich many-to-many interactions. We draw on theories of situated cognition, social cognition, and flow to explicate the influence of these characteristics on the process of learning and decision-making. Data was collected by means of a quasi-experiment in Second Life (SL). Results from this study extend and validate the predictions of situated theories of decision-making within the context of a virtual world environment and suggest guidelines for practitioners who wish to use such environments to support organizational learning and decision-making. Perhaps the most compelling of these is to focus on maximizing the immersion of the individual in the activity by stimulating his or her perceptions of others and activity-related cues in the environment. Abstract: Using the established definition of situated cognition in organizations as "the interaction of cognitive schemas and organizational context" (Lant 2002), we examine empirical case studies from the last 15 years to illustrate what situated cognitions in organizations might actually look like. Grounded in this research, we develop a framework that identifies how some specific forms of cognitive schemas (i.e., rule schemas, event schemas, person schemas) and specific contexts (e.g., physical contexts, institutional contexts) interact during sensemaking processes to give rise to momentary perceptions that we call situated cognitions. We present evidence that common patterns of interaction between schemas and context may occur during sensemaking in organizations. In terms of theoretical implications, our framework focuses attention on the specific interactions between context and cognition (rather than on context or cognition alone) that comprise situated cognitions, and helps to more concretely define situated cognitions as momentary or temporally bounded perceptions. We offer several practical implications of this framework for managers and suggest avenues for further elaboration on our ideas through research. Collapse
