Abstract: A centralised open innovation search approach refers to setting up a dedicated and specialised sourcing unit to search external sources for knowledge, while a decentralised open innovation search approach refers to empowering employees in various functional units to search external sources for knowledge during their routine research and development work. This research examines the operational alignment of the open innovation search approach with information technology (IT) use given that open innovation search can be significantly enhanced by IT. We theorise that organisations that have a high extent of employing a centralised (decentralised) open innovation approach and a high IT use intensity for external (internal) information flows are likely to have a high extent of exploratory (exploitative) innovation. We further posit that harnessing exploratory and exploitative innovation can lead to organisational innovation performance. This theory was validated through a field survey involving 186 organisations. The findings from this study advance the IT and open innovation literature by gaining an understanding of the interplay among different open innovation search approaches and IT use, and the resulting variances in innovation performance in terms of new product sales and patents. Abstract: Research has shown that many people use social networking sites (SNS) excessively, which may lead to various negative consequences. With the aim of reducing SNS addition, this study investigates the role of SNS characteristics in the formation of SNS addiction. By applying incentive sensitization theory in the context of SNS addiction, we suggest that the compulsive motivation for using an SNS is developed by pleasurable and rewarding SNS use experiences. Social network characteristics and communication characteristics, which determine the rewards that users obtain from SNS use, moderate the relationship between habitual SNS use and SNS addiction. We develop novel behavioral measures of habitual SNS use and SNS addiction based on SNS activity logs and empirically test the research model using a large and unique dataset. Besides contributing to the theoretical development of SNS addiction, the results of this study offer practical options to help prevent SNS addiction. Moreover, the measures of SNS addiction enable the automated monitoring of user behavior on SNS, which could be useful for detecting potential SNS addicts. and underwent two revisions. extent to which SNS can produce thrill and fill sociopsychological voids mainly depend on users' online social network and their communication with online friends. Communication CharacteristicsThe first communication characteristic is the communication channel used to interact with SNS friends. As discussed above, SNS allow users to interact with friends through either directed or undirected communication channels. Directed communication channels allow information to be sent to a specific person; thus, the interaction occurs between the sender and receiver only. In contrast, undirected communication channels allow users to share their current status or any other information with a larger audience. Since friends' status updates are displayed in an aggregate stream on the user's SNS homepage, it is more convenient and efficient for users to gain information about their friends and communicate with them through undirected communication channels. In this sense, the broadcasting nature of undirected communication enhances the efficiency of information dissemination among users, and thus plays an important role in providing more pleasurable and rewarding SNS use experiences and fulfilling users' social needs.Moreover, because users can view and comment on the original content posted through undirected communication channels, see the comments made by other users on these posts, and add to these comments, undirected communication provides greater opportunities for users to interact not only with the sender but also with other friends who reply to the post. Given that undirected communication leads to more interactions among users, and social relationships are maintained through regular interaction (Allan, 1979), users' social needs are more likely to be fulfilled if their online friends send information through undirected communication channels vs. directed communication channels. Since the transition from habitual SNS use to SNS addiction is influenced by the extent to which users' social needs are met, the communication channel moderates the positive relationship between habitual SNS use and SNS addiction. Hence, we hypothesize:H3a: Habitual SNS use is more likely to lead to SNS addiction if the user's online friends send information through undirected vs. directed communication channels on the SNS.To justify the hypotheses in the research model, we argue that number of SNS friends, activeness of SNS friends, communication channel, and communication content format moderate the relationship between habit and addiction through the mechanism of social needs fulfillment. Since the focus of the study is how social network characteristics and communication characteristics facilitate or inhibit the formation of SNS addiction, we do not include social needs fulfillment in the research model. Abstract: Crowdsourcing is an effective means to generate a multitude of ideas in a very short amount of time. Therefore, companies and researchers increasingly tap into the power of the crowd for the evaluation of these ideas. However, not all types of crowds are the equally capable for complex decisionmaking tasks, which might result in poor selection performance. This research aims to evaluate differences in anonymous crowds and student crowds regarding their information processing, attention and selection performance. A webexperiment with 339 participants was conducted to reveal that 1) undergraduate Information Systems students perform better in idea selection than crowd workers recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk, 2) attention checks increase selection performance and 3) while crowd workers indicate to process information more systematically, students acquire more information for evaluation than crowd workers. Abstract: Online social media is transforming the way customers communicate and exchange product information with others. Consumers increasingly rely on the opinions and recommendations from social media members when making purchasing decisions. However, information received from social media may have different meanings and social implications for consumers. Based on the theory of informational social influence and heuristicsystematic model (HSM), we develop a model to understand the relative importance of informational social influence, normative social influence, and perceived information quality on the consumer’s social shopping intention under different levels of product involvement. The results of the structural equation modeling (SEM) using a sample of 503 consumers in the Facebook brand fan pages indicate that social influences have a greater impact on the consumer’s social shopping intention than perceived information quality. Three social interactional factors (perceived similarity, familiarity, and expertise) have a positive effect on social shopping intention via the mediation of informational, normative social influence and perceive information quality. The multiplegroup analysis suggests that high product-involved consumers are motivated to exert more cognitive effort to evaluate the product information. In contrast, low product-involved consumers are more susceptible to informational social influence. We draw on these findings to offer implications for researchers and practitioners. Collapse

Abstract: Identifying promising ideas from large innovation contests is challenging. Evaluators do not perform well when selecting the best ideas from large idea pools as their information processing capabilities are limited. Therefore, it seems reasonable to let crowds evaluate subsets of ideas to distribute efforts among the many. One meaningful approach to subset creation is to draw ideas into subsets according to their similarity. Whether evaluation based on subsets of similar ideas is better than compared to subsets of random ideas is unclear. We employ experimental methods with 66 crowd workers to explore the effects of idea similarity on evaluation performance and cognitive demand. Our study contributes to the understanding of idea selection by providing empirical evidence that crowd workers presented with subsets of similar ideas experience lower cognitive effort and achieve higher elimination accuracy than crowd workers presented with subsets of random ideas. Abstract: This paper investigates the moderating role of multitasking computer self-efficacy on the relationship between social media overload and social media fatigue. We conceptualize social media overload using two dimensions (i.e. information overload and communication overload) and hypothesize that these two dimensions affect social media fatigue. In addition, we also hypothesize that multitasking computer selfefficacy will attenuate the effects of these two dimensions on social media fatigue. We test the model by collecting data from 131 students from an Irish university. Partial Least Squares techniques were used to test the model. The findings suggest that both information overload and communication overload significantly affect social media fatigue, although, the effect of communication overload is more critical than that of information overload. Furthermore, our study results suggest that multitasking computer self-efficacy attenuates the effect of information overload, and reinforces the effect of communication overload on social media fatigue. Abstract: In this study, we adopt a stress-strain-outcome framework and conceptualize work overload as a stress, work exhaustion as a strain, and job satisfaction as an outcome. We argue that professional self-efficacy is a coping mechanism, place it as a moderator, and hypothesize that it would attenuate the effects of 1) work overload on work exhaustion and 2) work exhaustion on job satisfaction. We test the model by using survey data collected from 144 IT professionals in Finland by means of the Partial Least Squares technique. The findings suggest that work overload has a significant positive effect on work exhaustion, work exhaustion has a significant negative effect on job satisfaction, and professional self-efficacy attenuates both of these relationships. These findings imply that managers need to keep in mind the possible risks from work overload and exhaustion. Furthermore, they should try to improve their employees’ professional self-efficacy to mitigate these risks. Collapse

Abstract: Firms are awash in big data and analytical technology as part of deriving values in the turbulent environment. The literature has somewhat reached a consensus that investments in technology only may not reap benefits from business analytics (BA). The main purpose of BA is not about how to install technical capabilities, but about how to make a process whereby a firm builds a value chain converting data into insights, leading to quality decisions. Drawing upon the theory of the information value chain, this study develops a BA value chain model and tests it with 268 data scientists. Results show that organizational resilience, absorptive capacity, and analytical IT capabilities are critical antecedents to analytical decision-making quality which in turn influences BA net benefits. Particularly, results illustrate that organizational resilience is a more significant variable impacting analytical decision-making quality than the influence of people and technology. Abstract: Attracting new contributors is a necessary but not a sufficient condition, to ensure the survival and long-term success of Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) projects. The well-being of a FOSS project depends on the turning of project newcomers into ‘good contributors’ that is to say into individuals that substantially contribute to the project - but also that perform citizenship behaviors that protect and nurture its community. This study is a mixed-methods investigation of the socialization factors that influence contributor performance in large FOSS projects. A qualitative research component resulted into the development of a FOSS socialization framework as well as into the identification of key FOSS project citizenship behaviors. A conceptual model was then developed and empirically examined with 367 contributors from 12 large FOSS projects. The model hypothesizes the mediating effect of two proximal socialization variables, social identification and social integration, between FOSS newcomer socialization factors and contributor performance (conceptualized as task performance and community citizenship behaviors). The results demonstrate the influence of social identification and social integration in predicting contributor performance, as well as the importance of key socialization factors that are: task segregation, task purposefulness, interaction intensity, and supportiveness. Abstract: Popular media and business thought leaders suggest that the emerging millennial workforce makes business-to-business purchase decisions differently, because of its increased reliance on digital information sources (e.g., blogs, social media, and online forums). This argument appears to contradict extant research, which indicates that organizational buyers rely on decision shortcuts (e.g., brand, loyalty, and peer opinions) to mitigate risks or to simplify purchasing decisions. One can argue, however, that decision makers gain more information from digital sources, and thus may rely less on these shortcuts. At the same time, digital sources also can strengthen prior biases, which may not necessarily change decision outcomes. In this study, we systematically evaluate the role of digital information sources in decision-making using information processing theory. We introduce a new Digital Embeddedness construct to conceptualize the extent to which information from digital sources is integral to an individual’s decision-making. This construct is developed using the Accessibility-Diagnosticity framework, which posits that information processing depends on the ease with which information can be retrieved (accessibility) and its perceived relevance (diagnosticity). Analysis of survey responses from 196 purchasing managers suggests that more digitally embedded buyers are more willing to adopt innovations, yet interestingly, they rely more on brand and peer opinions when making decisions. We also find that while digitally embedded buyers feel more attached to their existing vendors, they are less likely to re-purchase from them. These results suggest that digital information sources reinforce some decision shortcuts (e.g. brands and peer opinions) for digitally embedded buyers, but make them more objective and reduce the reliance on other decision shortcuts (e.g. loyalty). Implications are discussed for digital marketing, and for understanding the effect of digital sources on organizational decision-making. Collapse
