Abstract: The increasing number of sensors and communication technologies that are built into customer products make information about the product status accessible over the internet. Nonetheless, manufacturers' Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Information Systems (IS) do not integrate these product instance data. Furthermore, existing PLM IS do not support product related tasks after the manufacturing phase. In order to understand the impact of data from connected products as new sources of information on PLM, we conducted a systematic literature review. Our results led to a topic map that identifies drivers, use cases and barriers and contextualizes them. We further analyzed existing PLM models that support the analysis of product instance data. We found that the existing PLM IS have several limitations which hinder a successful realization in practice. The results of this review are a first step towards understanding how the Internet of Things (IoT) influences PLM on a firm level. Collapse

Abstract: In today's competitive business environment, there is a strong need for businesses to collect, monitor, and analyze user-generated data on their own and on their competitors’ social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and blogs. To achieve a competitive advantage, it is often necessary to listen to and understand what customers are saying about competitors’ products and services. Current social media analytics frameworks do not provide benchmarks that allow businesses to compare customer sentiment on social media to easily understand where businesses are doing well and where they need to improve. In this paper, we present a social media competitive analytics framework with sentiment benchmarks that can be used to glean industry-specific marketing intelligence. Based on the idea of the proposed framework, new social media competitive analytics with sentiment benchmarks can be developed to enhance marketing intelligence and to identify specific actionable areas in which businesses are leading and lagging to further improve their customers’ experience using customer opinions gleaned from social media. Guided by the proposed framework, an innovative business-driven social media competitive analytics tool named VOZIQ is developed. We use VOZIQ to analyze tweets associated with five large retail sector companies and to generate meaningful business insight reports. Collapse

Abstract: An assumption implied by much of the literature in information systems (IS) research is that people’s interpretations of technology influence the way in which technology gets adapted in organizations. Despite this acknowledgment, little insight is provided for how these interpretations can be elicited, and only a few studies suggest methods for doing so. In this article we address this opportunity by advancing cognitive mapping as a well-established method to systematically inquire into people’s interpretations of technology. We show how cognitive maps can serve as visual means of representation of these interpretations and discuss how the maps can be used to facilitate individual reflection and collective negotiation of technology adaptation. We illustrate the use of the cognitive mapping method with a case example of the introduction of an electronic patient record (EPR) system in a hospital setting. Based on our findings, we engage in a discussion of the value of cognitive mapping as a facilitating technique of individual reflection, as well as collective negotiation and construction in relation to technology adaptation. This implies a discussion of the epistemological, theoretical, and practical implications of its use. Collapse

Abstract: This article surveys business school deans and IS academics regarding their level of agreement with concerns attributed to the Information Systems discipline as summarized in Ives and Adams (2012). The responses of the two constituent groups are evaluated independently, then the responses are juxtaposed for between-group analysis. Additional concerns are elicited from the respective groups, and the social representations generated are reported per stakeholder group. Analysis is illustrated through network topic maps and discussed based on the authors' interpretations of the findings. The findings show some marked differences between the groups suggesting that IS academics are more critical of the IS discipline than business school deans. Collapse

Abstract: Effective search support is an important tool for helping individuals deal with the problem of information overload. This is particularly true in the field of nanotechnology, where information from patents, grants, and research papers is growing rapidly. Guided by cognitive fit and cognitive load theories, we develop an advanced Web-based system, Nano Mapper, to support users' search and analysis of nanotechnology developments. We perform controlled experiments to evaluate the functions of Nano Mapper. We examine users' search effectiveness, efficiency, and evaluations of system usefulness, ease of use, and satisfaction. Our results demonstrate that Nano Mapper enables more effective and efficient searching, and users consider it to be more useful and easier to use than the benchmark systems. Users are also more satisfied with Nano Mapper and have higher intention to use it in the future. User evaluations of the analysis functions are equally positive. Collapse

Abstract: Knowledge mapping can provide comprehensive depictions of rapidly evolving scientific domains. Taking the design science approach, we developed a Web-based knowledge mapping system (i.e., Nano Mapper) that provides interactive search and analysis on various scientific document sources in nanotechnology. We conducted multiple studies to evaluate Nano Mapper's search and analysis functionality respectively. The search functionality appears more effective than that of the benchmark systems. Subjects exhibit favorable satisfaction with the analysis functionality. Our study addresses several gaps in knowledge mapping for nanotechnology and illustrates desirability of using the design science approach to design, implement, and evaluate an advanced information system. Abstract: Around the globe, we are witnessing a transition from a primarily goods-based to a service-based economy. At the same time, advances in information technology provide significant opportunities for the electronic provisioning of services via the internet. As a result, more and more services are being traded online. Just as search tools are indispensable to discover information or goods on the web, they will become vital for discovering services on the web. In this paper we present Themis-S, a prototype of an ontology-based natural language service discovery engine. In a series of experiments, we evaluate the retrieval effectiveness of Themis-S in comparison to other state-of-the-art information retrieval models. The experiments indicate that Themis-S, incorporating WordNet as a general purpose ontology, can outperform systems applying syntactic information retrieval models such as the Vector Space Model (VSM) or the Probabilistic Relevance Model (PRM). Abstract: An appropriate use of various pedagogical strategies is fundamental for the effective transfer of knowledge in a flourishing e-learning environment. The resultant information superfluity, however, needs to be tackled for developing sustainable e-learning. This necessitates an effective representation and intelligent access to learning resources. Topic maps address these problems of representation and retrieval of information in a distributed environment. The former aspect is particularly relevant where the subject domain is complex and the later aspect is important where the amount of resources is abundant but not easily accessible. Conversely, effective presentation of learning resources based on various pedagogical strategies along with global capturing and authentication of learning resources are an intrinsic part of effective management of learning resources. Towards fulfilling this objective, this paper proposes a multi-level ontology-driven topic mapping approach to facilitate an effective visualization, classification and global authoring of learning resources in e-learning. Abstract: In the last few years an increasing number of very large, publicly funded, IT development projects have gained significant media attention due to cases of budget overrun, management problems or outright failure. Examples of such projects include the European Galileo, the German Toll Collect project, or the Australian Custom’s Integrated Cargo System (ICS). Further projects in an earlier lifecycle stage are the British NHS project or the renewal of the US Air Traffic Control system. These projects show a number of common characteristics, such as largeness, technological and institutional complexity, political involvement and public awareness, which set them apart from the average IT project. Drawing on both the literature on IT project management and the growing body of literature on mega projects we describe this type of project as “IT mega projects”. Since IT mega projects and their management challenges are not well understood, we aim to improve our conceptual understanding by identifying and discussing typical characteristics of IT mega projects that impact on management and the resulting research issues. Abstract: There has been a tremendous growth in the amount of information and resources on the World Wide Web that are useful to researchers and practitioners in science domains. While the Web has made the communication and sharing of research ideas and results among scientists easier and faster than ever, its dynamic and unstructured nature also makes the scientists faced with such problems as information overload, vocabulary difference, and lack of analysis tools. To address these problems, it is highly desirable to have an integrated, “one-stop shopping” Web portal to support effective information searching and analysis as well as to enhance communication and collaboration among researchers in various scientific fields. In this paper, we review existing information retrieval techniques and related literature, and propose a framework for developing integrated Web portals that support information searching and analysis for scientific knowledge. Our framework incorporates collection building, meta-searching, keyword suggestion, and various content analysis techniques such as document summarization, document clustering, and topic map visualization. Patent analysis techniques such as citation analysis and content map analysis are also incorporated. To demonstrate the feasibility of our approach, we developed based on our architecture a knowledge portal, called NanoPort, in the field of nanoscale science and engineering. We report our experience and explore the various issues of relevance to developing a Web portal for scientific domains. The system was compared to other search systems in the field and several design issues were identified. An evaluation study was conducted and the results showed that subjects were more satisfied with the NanoPort system than with Scirus, a leading search engine for scientific articles. Through our prototype system, we demonstrated the feasibility of using such an integrated approach and the study brought insight into applying the proposed domain-independent architecture to different areas of science and engineering in the future.
