Abstract: Social coding refers to a modern and technology-mediated way of peer code review between software developers. Whereas social coding has a long tradition in open source communities, it is only recently becoming popular in co-located, agile information systems development teams. Although social coding constitutes an important mechanisms of quality assurance and organizational learning in open source, little is known about its effects on co-located and ongoing professional software development teams. We close this gap by examining the question of how and why social coding affects professional development teams’ work outcome and transactive memory. Results from our questionnaire-based survey with 61 development teams of more than 300 developers, team leads, and product managers, suggest that social coding not only improves teams’ software quality directly but can also partially substitute for their transactive memory system. This has implications for theory on software development and transactive memory. Collapse

Abstract: While research on organizational online networking recently increased significantly, most studies adopt quantitative research designs with a focus on the consequences of social network configurations. Very limited attention is paid to comprehensive theoretical conceptions of the complex phenomenon of organizational online networking. We address this gap by adopting a theoretical framework of the deep structure of organizational online networking with a focus on their emerging meaning for the employees. We apply and assess the framework in a qualitative case study of a large-scale implementation of a corporate social network site (SNS) in a global organization. We reveal organizational online networking as a multi-dimensional phenomenon with multiplex relationships that are unbalanced, primarily consist of weak ties and are subject to temporal change. Further, we identify discourse drivers and information retrievers as two mutually interdependent actor roles as an explanation for uneven levels of user contributions to the SNS. Based on our analysis, we elicit abstract order principles, such as topical discourses, and identify transactive memory theory as a potent explanation of the evolving interaction structures. We finally discuss how the deep structure framework can contribute to future research on organizational networks. Collapse

Abstract: The knowledge management (KM) literature largely focuses on the explicit and formal representation of knowledge in computer-based KM systems. Informal KM practices are widespread, but less is known about them. This paper aims to redress this imbalance by exploring the use of interactive information technology (IT) applications for informal knowledge sharing (KS). We develop theoretical propositions to highlight the key facets of informal KS processes, and illustrate them through an interpretive case-study analysis of KS in two public relations firms in China. We then discuss the implications of our findings for practice in both China and beyond. Finally, we recommend a research agenda to further investigate informal, relationship-based knowledge sharing. Abstract: Based on organizational learning theory and the dynamic capability view, this study examines the relationships between transactive memory systems, team learning, and project performance in new product teams. Regression analysis is used to test the hypotheses in a sample of 218 Taiwanese firms. The findings indicate differential effects of three dimensions of a transactive memory system on exploitative and exploratory learning. Exploitative and exploratory learning are positively associated with project performance. The results also support that the interaction between exploitative and exploratory learning has a positive effect on project performance. Managerial implications and future research directions are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Volume 23 of Information Systems Journal marks the first complete volume with new Editorsin-Chief; we began our tenure with Volume 22, Number 4. Along with the change from two founding editors to three co-Editors-in-Chief comes a new style of editorial writing. The editorial for each issue (excluding special issues) will be written by one of the editors. While all of the editorials will include an introduction to the papers in the issue, each of us will also provide additional editorial comments in our own unique ways. Hence, you will witness some stylistic variety in the editorials that will appear in ISJ.In this editorial I would like to draw your attention to the ways in which the four papers in this issue are an expression of ISJ's mission. As we noted in our inaugural editorial, the motivating force behind the establishment of this journal was the desire to support the publication of interpretive qualitative research in the information systems field. Interpretive research, by definition, focuses on the human element of information systems through its emphasis on unearthing and examining the subjective realities of the individuals and organizations being studied. Through its commitment to interpretive qualitative research ISJ has shown its commitment to examining the subtle and nuanced aspects of human behaviour -individually, organizationally and culturally -as it relates to information systems. Over time, the epistemologies and research methods have broadened such that ISJ began to publish positivist quantitative research. But as this issue illustrates, the commitment to focusing on the nuances of the human aspect of information systems remains.The theme running through all of the papers in this issue is human relationships. The role of human relationships in information systems development and use is expressed through studies as diverse as the evolving nature of trust during new system implementation, social aspects of engagement and flow among participants in virtual worlds, interpersonal behaviour among employees in an offshore collaborative work environment, and the dynamics of informal knowledge sharing among individuals in a company.The paper by Rose & Schlichter (2012) examines the relationship between trust and information system implementation project outcomes. While trust is acknowledged as an important topic in information systems research it is more likely to be found in research about ecommerce than system implementation projects. The particular focus of attention in this paper is the dynamic quality of trust relationships over the course of time. Giddens' account of trust in his theory of modernity is used to inform a longitudinal, interpretive case study of the implementation of an integrated hospital system in the Faroe Islands. Abstract: This paper explores the knowledge demands of expertise seekers for the purpose of designing effective expertise locator systems. We conduct an empirical investigation, using conjoint analysis and within-subject tests, to determine the relative importance assigned to different expert attributes under two expertise seeking contexts: knowledge allocation and knowledge retrieval. Our results show that when choosing an expert to retrieve knowledge from (knowledge retrieval), expertise seekers will assign greater importance to the person's level of expertise. When selecting an expert to transfer knowledge to (knowledge allocation), attributes representing the network ties between the expert and the seeker as well as the benevolence of the expert will be perceived as more important. These results are important for the design of expertise locator systems that are better customized to fit the knowledge needs of their users, and to serve the organization as a whole. Collapse

Abstract: With the increasing processing power and plummeting costs of multimedia technologies, our ability to ubiquitously access and disseminate information continues to become indefinitely easier. However, emerging research shows that we are struggling to process information as fast as it arrives. The problem of information overload is a significant one for contemporary organisations as it can adversely affect productivity, decision-making, and employee morale. To combat this problem, organisations often resort to investing in technical solutions such as business intelligence software or semantic technologies. While such technical approaches can certainly aid in making sense of information overload, less attention has been directed at understanding how social behaviours within inter-personal networks – the primary conduit of information – have evolved to deal with the surge of digital information. Using social network analysis and interview evidence from two information intensive firms, this study finds a small number of information specialists who emerge to filter useful information into and around the intra-organizational network. The article concludes with a discussion of the theoretical and practical implications of our findings. Collapse

Abstract: Knowledge management has received increasing attention from both academics and practitioners in the past few years. However, much of what we know is limited to larger organisations in developed economies. In this study, we describe and analyse the impact of an knowledge sharing project in a medium sized Chinese professional services firm. Employing Canonical Action Research, we describe how we diagnosed the organisational situation, planned theory-driven changes, implemented a new knowledge sharing platform and then evaluated the outcomes of the implementation. Key findings relate to the importance of guanxi (relationships) between employees and the role of instant messaging technology. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings for knowledge management in the Chinese context are discussed. Recommendations for future research and additional technology applications are identified. Collapse

Abstract: This research examines the role of collaborative information technologies and their interaction with transactive memory. We simulated a project group where members worked towards completing an interdependent sequence of tasks to reach a common goal. In our experiments, we observed that the change in technology functionalities did not affect group performance significantly although their impact on transactive memory strength was significant. Additional analyses showed that these functionalities can increase the team performance when a dynamic event such as departure occurs in a group. In summary, the role of technology can be unclear in a static group but collaborative information technologies can moderate the impact of a dynamic event on the team performance. Collapse

Abstract: One of the key challenges that organizations face when trying to integrate knowledge across different functions is the need to overcome knowledge boundaries between team members. Such boundaries are associated with the different knowledge backgrounds of people from various disciplines and the various contexts and circumstances in which different organizational departments operate. In this research we investigate the role of a Transactive Memory (TM) theory which deals with knowledge coordination in groups - in bridging syntactic, semantic and pragmatic knowledge boundaries in cross-functional groups. The TM theory has been applied recently by Information Systems (IS) researchers to investigate various aspects related to the development and use of IS in different organizational contexts. Our findings, based on a survey conducted in a large Dutch governmental organization, extend the TM theory by showing that a Transactive Memory System negatively influences syntactic, semantic and pragmatic boundaries. Furthermore, our results show that a pragmatic boundary has a positive influence on the existence of the syntactic and semantic boundaries. The paper discusses implications of our findings for the design, maintenance and use of IT-based systems in organizations. Collapse
