Abstract: In this study, we investigate whether and to what extent community managers in online collaborative communities can stimulate community activities through their engagement. Using a novel data set of 22 large online idea crowdsourcing campaigns, we find that moderate but steady manager activities are adequate to enhance community participation. Moreover, we show that appreciation, motivation, and intellectual stimulation by community managers are positively associated with community participation but that the effectiveness of these communication strategies depends on the form of participation managers wish to encourage. Finally, the data reveal that community manager activities requiring more effort, such as media file uploads vs. simple written comments, have a stronger effect on community participation. Collapse

Abstract: The smart city concept is used as tool by local and municipal governments to deliver benefits relating to people, government, economy, mobility, environment and living. By embedding technologies and the internet of things in the city’s infrastructure, smart cities aim to generate insights that drive local improvements and accrue to a global level. The smart city is also viewed as a transformative lever for government. As cities move beyond smart city pilot showcasing projects, they face the challenge of embedding smart city initiatives in business-as-usual. Despite ambitious goals and high stakes, little is known about the work that leaders perform in undertaking this transformation. This study explored the leadership practice of smart city leaders in Denmark, Holland, USA, Australia and New Zealand. We focus on how leaders drive transformation from showcasing to becoming a sustainable smart city, and the challenges faced. As result we present a framework of six barriers to overcome and five enacted leadership roles to transform the city of today to a future sustainable smart city. We use institutional logics as a lens to discuss and explain the challenges faced by city leaders and their critical role as innovation agents and boundary spanners in smart city transformation. Abstract: Organizations face signiﬁcant challenges in capturing value from their investments in strategic information systems such as enterprise systems (ES). Managers are a powerful source of inﬂuence shaping the post-adoption attitudes and behaviors of users and the success of ES. However, the extant IS literature has focused primarily on the role of top management and theoretical explanations of the role of supervisors in fostering continuing usage of ES are lacking. Drawing on transformational leadership theory and the IS continuance (ISC) model, this paper conceptualizes a theoretical model diﬀerentiating the inﬂuence mechanisms through which diﬀerent types of leadership behaviors inﬂuence the success of ES. Data collected from 192 users of ES conﬁrms our theorization. We ﬁnd that transformational leadership behaviors of supervisors inﬂuence users’ evaluations of satisfaction and perceived usefulness, while their transactional leadership behaviors inﬂuence users’ ES continuance intention by moderating the eﬀects of user satisfaction and perceived usefulness on ES continuance intention. This study advances research on the role of leadership behaviors of supervisors in capturing value from enterprise systems. The research also contributes to practice by suggesting eﬀective strategies for promoting continued usage of mission critical systems such as enterprise systems and delivering value from ﬁrms’ IT investments. Abstract: Using full range leadership model and the knowledge integration view of organizations, we develop and test a model linking IT leadership to IT-business alignment. Specifically, we examine how transformational IT leadership behaviors influence IT-business alignment through mechanisms that develop shared domain knowledge between IT and business personnel and mechanisms that integrate specialized IT and business knowledge. We also examine how the former mechanisms influence the efficiency of the latter. This study contributes to the existing literature by suggesting transformational leadership and mechanisms related to knowledge integration as key factors in IT-business alignment. Collapse

Abstract: Technological discontinuities can fundamentally alter the competitive dynamics of sectors of the economy: IT can create opportunities for those who are able to transform themselves, while simultaneously putting others out of business. Leadership is a key determinant of the outcome of an IT-enabled transformation, but there is limited research on the role of leaders in responding to such disruptions. This article explores the role of the leader in a period of technological change through an extension of the theory of transformational leadership. We illustrate the extended theory through a commercial printer, EarthColor. The commercial printing industry is in a strategic transition, characterized by consolidation and increasing cost pressures that drive profit margins down. We discuss how IT is responsible for the changing rules of competition in this industry, as well as the transformation of printing from a craft-based profession to a digitized business, from a traditional manufacturing “production” industry to a digital information management business. The article documents the experiences of EarthColor and the leadership of its CEO who successfully navigated an industry upheaval precipitated by IT. We generalize the results of our research to our extension of transformational leadership theory that explicitly incorporates the demands of ITenabled transformations. Collapse

Abstract: We examined the positive impact of transformational leadership on IS success in organizations via two psychological mechanisms of system users’—perceived organizational support and systems self-efficacy. Our conceptual model was assessed using a sample of 251 employees from a multi-national bank in Korea. Overall, our results supported the hypothesized relationships: transformational leadership was positively related to system users’ IS success, and both perceived organizational support and systems self-efficacy of the system users mediated the relationship between transformational leadership and IS success. The results call for manager's attention to the importance of transformational leadership development in organizations. Collapse

Abstract: As remote work arrangements have gained in popularity, workforce dispersion has become increasingly widespread. Little research to date has examined how physical distance influences leader–follower communication effectiveness or leader performance. Building on top of transformational leadership theory, this paper explores how perceived leader performance is influenced by leadership style, physical distance, and communication effectiveness between leaders and followers. A survey of 138 followers, reporting to a total of 41 leaders, was conducted and data were analyzed at the individual follower-level using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) technique. Our model explained 45% of the variance in communication effectiveness and 67% of the variance in perceived leader performance. Consistent with past empirical findings, transformational leadership was associated more strongly with perceived leader performance than transactional contingent reward leadership. Communication effectiveness was also a strong predictor of leader performance, and furthermore acted as a mediator of leadership behavior on performance. Surprisingly, distance had no influence on either communication effectiveness or perceived leader performance. Implications for theory and practice are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: This study examined the positive impact of a specific leadership style (i.e., transformational leadership) on information systems (IS) effectiveness in organizations based upon a subordinate’s perspective. Specifically, we investigated system users’ psychological mechanisms that may mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and IS effectiveness (i.e., individual and organization impacts and IS satisfaction) via perceived organizational support (POS) and systems self-efficacy (SSE) of system users in organizations. In order to test a mediation model, Partial Least Squares were performed on a sample (N=251) embedded in 25 branches of a large multi-national bank in Korea. The results indicated that: (1) transformational leadership behaviors were positively related to individual and organizational IS impacts and individuals’ IS satisfaction, and (2) both POS and SSE of the system users mediated between transformational leadership and IS effectiveness, indicating that system users working with a transformational leader achieve IS effectiveness by perceived organizational support and high levels of systems self-efficacy. Theoretical and practical implications of this study and future research directions were discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Understanding the managerial influence on user beliefs of information technology (IT) has been an important concern to the IT adoption research. Our study contributes by examining relationships between managers’ leadership behavior and user technology beliefs. Drawing on the transformational leadership theory [Bass 1985], we develop a research model comparing the effect of leadership behaviors of two managerial roles - project champions and direct managers on user technology beliefs. Our cross-sectional survey across 138 users in five organizations suggests that project champions and direct managers’ leadership behaviors exercise different influences on users’ technology beliefs. Abstract: Organizational investments in such complex information systems as customer relationship management (CRM) systems have reached a record high. Unfortunately, underutilization of these sophisticated technologies hinders organizations from realizing the promised returns on investment. This study tackles this issue from the perspective of intention to explore, which refers to individual intentions to explore the technology and seek new ways of using it. Drawing upon insights from concepts of exploration, extra-role behavior, technology acceptance, and transformational leadership, this paper proposes a research model for employees’ intention to explore in mandatory organizational contexts, with special emphasis on the effect of transformational leadership. The model was examined in a large telecom service company that uses CRM information systems. The results suggest that transformational leadership, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation (i.e. perceived usefulness) directly affect employees’ exploratory intentions. Transformational leadership also indirectly influences intention to explore through individuals’ intrinsic motivation and computer self-efficacy. Collapse
