Abstract: Information systems (IS) researchers persistently examine how information and communications technology (ICT) changes attitudes and behaviors but rarely leverage the persuasion literature when doing so possibly due to this literature’s well-documented complexity. Accordingly, in this study, we help researchers understand and apply persuasion theory in IS research. To do so, we develop a common frame of reference to help IS researchers to conceptualize persuasion and conceptually differentiate it from related concepts. In doing so, we also comprehensively summarize existing research and theory and provide suggestions to guide future IS research into persuasion and behavior change. Collapse

Abstract: Research highlights transparency as a critical requirement for the design of information systemsespecially in complex systems where decision-making benefits from a collaboration between humans and machines. However, little research has been conducted on how information systems should be designed to provide actionable information-a property also referred to as useful transparency. We explore this relevant question in the manufacturing context by examining the continuous improvement process of an automated production line. Following the design science research paradigm, we iteratively develop an artifact based on design requirements derived with employees. Using the developed artifact, we study two phenomena: First, we show through a focus group conducted with domain experts that making process information accessible to employees is a viable means to facilitate useful transparency. Second, we determine that useful transparency improves process performance-by observing a statistically significant reduction in the duration of downtime incidents. We conclude by discussing two refined design principles for facilitating useful transparency. Collapse

Abstract: There is a continued interest amongst information system scholars on online communities (OCs). Current accounts, however, often neglect the complex relations and tensions that exist within and between community participants. This is in particular, where these online communities emerge from and around the adoption of large commercial systems, the tensions between these communities and the vendors of the technologies. This existing ‘community’ perspective envisions OCs as idealised microcosm of society. In this paper, we criticise this view by drawing attention to the co-existence of conflicts of interests and collaborations within communities. This brings into light the ‘commodity’ view of the OCs. Abstract: In the light of pervasive digitalization, traditional physical products get augmented with digital components that create the potential of making the whole product lifecycle visible for product developers. As numerous opportunities sketch out how feedback such as sensor data might be leveraged for future products, a comprehensive model to describe, particularly a classification model to organize and structure these opportunities seems analytically useful. Hence, this paper pursues a scenario-based approach and proposes a taxonomy for feedback-driven product development scenarios in manufacturing industries. Grounded on (1) empirical data from case studies and focus groups and (2) a systematic literature review, we follow an established taxonomy development method employing the general systems theory as meta-characteristic. With the limitation of a (1) qualitative, interpretive empirical research design and a (2) representative literature review, we contribute to the body of knowledge by shedding light on feedback-driven product development from a classification perspective which may act as structuring and creativity fostering tool. Abstract: Collaborative research projects as a means to organise Information Systems research and prototyping activities become increasingly widespread. Their management is challenged by a multiplicity of different partners, activities and results. Required is a project management approach that allows for flexibility within the project life-cycle to address changing needs. We present research in progress aimed at conceptualising the notion of project management relevant situations in this context. This discriminates the conditions and circumstances under which management involvement becomes necessary and thus enables the definition of a suitable management approach. We identify a set of constituent factors to describe different situations based on a literature review and interviews with project managers involved in collaborative research projects. Future research is presented with respect to completing the full analysis cycle of our thematic analysis and the development of a situation-specific project management approach. Collapse
